Characterization and Photodegradation of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) From a Tropical Lake and Its Dominant Primary Producer, the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa
This study investigates optical and high-resolution molecular signatures and photochemical degradation of DOM from the Barra Bonita Reservoir (BB-DOM), a tropical eutrophic lake, as well as from its dominant phytoplankton species, the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa (Microcystis-DOM). Consistent with a predominantly autotrophic source, BB-DOM and Microcystis-DOM exhibited high protein-like fluorescence and contained a large number of aliphatics. Microcystis-DOM was enriched in peptide-like formulae, while BB-DOM had higher chromophoric and fluorescent DOM(CDOM and FDOM) and was enriched in moderately unsaturated formulae, indicating additions of terrigenous DOM and/or in situ processing of autochthonous material in the lake. Consistent with its higher CDOM content, BB-DOM was more photoreactive than Microcystis-DOM. For both types of DOM, photodegradation resulted in loss of CDOM, FDOM, moderately unsaturated structures, high O/C and low H/C formulae, and preservation of aliphatics. The majority of photoproducts of 0.5 d irradiation were subsequently removed by day 7, and photoproducts represented a minor fraction of the photo-irradiated DOM. For BB-DOM, molecular formula photolability increased with increasing aromaticity index values, while for Microcystis-DOM, molecular formula photolability increased with molecular mass. Photodegradation increased the proportion of molecular formulae containing N (CHO + N) in BB-DOM, while the molecular mass and the proportion of CHO + N formulae decreased upon photo-irradiation of Microcystis-DOM. In concert, these molecular shifts due to photodegradation decreased the diversity of and increased the similarity between BB-DOM and Microcystis-DOM, suggesting the selective pressure exerted by photochemistry selects for the survival of similar compounds in both samples
Dynamics of Counterion Condensation
Using a generalization of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation, dynamics of
counterion condensation is studied. For a single charged plate in the presence
of counterions, it is shown that the approach to equilibrium is diffusive. In
the far from equilibrium case of a moving charged plate, a dynamical counterion
condensation transition occurs at a critical velocity. The complex dynamic
behavior of the counterion cloud is shown to lead to a novel nonlinear
force-velocity relation for the moving plate.Comment: 5 pages, 1 ps figure included using eps
Compensation temperatures and exchange bias in La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6
We report on the study of magnetic properties of the La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6 double
perovskite. Via ac magnetic susceptibility we have observed evidence of weak
ferromagnetism and reentrant spin glass behavior on an antiferromagnetic
matrix. Regarding the magnetic behavior as a function of temperature, we have
found that the material displays up to three inversions of its magnetization,
depending on the appropriate choice of the applied magnetic field. At low
temperature the material exhibit exchange bias effect when it is cooled in the
presence of a magnetic field. Also, our results indicate that this effect may
be observed even when the system is cooled at zero field. Supported by other
measurements and also by electronic structure calculations, we discuss the
magnetic reversals and spontaneous exchange bias effect in terms of magnetic
phase separation and magnetic frustration of Ir4+ ions located between the
antiferromagnetically coupled Co ions.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures and supplemental materia
Association of a green tea extract with serum immunoglobulin G status and neonatal vitality in newborn dairy calves
Poor vigor at birth has been associated with reduced IgG absorption from colostrum and a reduced vitality in neonatal dairy calves. Some natural compounds, such as green tea extract, may improve vitality in compromised calves. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the potential of supplementing a green tea extract (15 mL) to calves to improve vigor and activity behavior for the first 72 h postnatal. Also, this study aimed to investigate the influence of green tea extract supplementation on calf serum IgG concentration and the apparent efficiency of absorption (AEA) of colostral IgG. Holstein calves (n = 24) weighing 42.49 ± 1.07 kg postnatal received a complete random assignment at 3 h of one 15-mL dose of green tea extract (Calf Perk, TechMix) or distilled water orally before tube feeding colostrum replacer (Premolac Plus IgG, Zinpro) at 4 h postnatal. Two observers assessed for calving time and dystocia by live video stream to retrieve all calves within 2 h postnatal. One veterinarian performed a baseline vigor assessment based on heart rate and response to stimuli on all calves at 2.5 h, before colostrum feeding at 3.75 h, as well as at 24, 48, and 72 h postnatal. Calf blood samples were taken to assess total IgG by radial immunodiffusion assay at 2.5, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h. Calf vitality was also observed continuously by video for all calves to determine whether treatment was associated with attempts to stand, lying time, and exploration of their pen environment for the first 24 h. We used an ordinal logistic model to evaluate the odds of green tea extract improving a calf\u27s vigor category from 2.5 h postnatal to 72 h of age. Vigor score was categorized as abnormal (≤4), average (5), or alert (≥6), with hour as a fixed effect. We also ran mixed linear models to evaluate the effect of extract on total IgG and AEA, with time and dystocia as fixed effects. Five dystocia calves were enrolled (2 control, 3 extract), but assistance was minor (e.g., manual assistance and all were assisted within 1 h). Baseline vigor scores and baseline total IgG were not different between groups. Vigor score category was not associated with green tea extract supplementation (odds ratio 1.17; 95% CI: 0.43–3.15) but increased with time compared with controls. We observed no association of treatment with total IgG or AEA in the calves, suggesting green tea extract does not compromise IgG absorption. Calf vitality, lying behavior, and exploratory behavior were not associated with green tea extract treatment. Our findings suggest that green tea extract supplementation does not affect AEA and serum IgG concentration in calves. Future research should evaluate whether green tea extract improves vitality in calves experiencing severe dystocia
Quantitative study of molecular N_2 trapped in disordered GaN:O films
The structure of disordered GaN:O films grown by ion-assisted deposition is
investigated using x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and Raman
spectroscopy. It is found that between 4 and 21 % of the nitrogen in the films
is in the form of molecular N_2 that interacts only weakly with the surrounding
matrix. The anion to cation ratio in the GaN:O host remains close to unity, and
there is a close correlation between the N_2 fraction, the level of oxygen
impurities, and the absence of short-range order in the GaN:O matrix.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Teleophthalmology Support for Primary Care Diagnosis and Management
This study was performed to evaluate a healthcare strategy based on teleophthalmology for diagnosis and management of primary healthcare users. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to review the medical records of patients from January 2013 to December 2014 from primary care units in the city of São Paulo. The units referred patients, who had diabetes or high blood pressure, and were users of chloroquine compounds, for a fundus examination. The images were sent to a reading center for review, diagnosis, and patient referrals. From 9173 analyzed patients, 570 (6.2%) were excluded because of poor image quality. Of the remaining patients, 4933 (57.3%) had diabetes, 7242 (84,2%) systemic hypertension, and 113 (1.3%) used chloroquine. Of these, 989 (11.5%) patients needed ophthalmologic treatment. The most frequently prescribed treatments were cataract extraction in 692 (70%) of 989 and photocoagulation in 245 (24.8%) of 989 cases. Overall, cataract extraction was indicated in 692 (8%) of 8603 cases and photocoagulation in 245 (2.8%) of 8603 cases. When only patients with diabetes were considered, the indication for photocoagulation increased to 4.5%.The results showed that non-medical professionals could produce good-quality ocular images for screening of ocular diseases in most cases; only 6.2% of ocular images did not meet quality requirements. Most patients referred for fundus examination did not need a specific treatment, indicating that this system could be an inexpensive and reliable tool for use in developing countries.Â

Electronic properties of (Ga,Mn)N thin films with high Mn content
Optical and dc resistivity measurements as well as x-ray spectroscopies have been performed on (Ga,Mn)N films containing Mn at up to 11 at. %. The results indicate that at higher Mn contents, the Fermi level is situated within extended states, while GaN host interband optical transitions are unaffected. The Mn state is confirmed to be 3d⁵, as in the case of lower Mn content films; however, the high Mn content merges the 3d levels into a band located just below the host conduction band. The Fermi level is located within these Mn states just below the conduction band, in sharp contrast to its midgap position in fully crystalline, low Mn concentration materials. The difference in the position of the Fermi level at high Mn dopant levels has important implications for the promotion of ferromagnetism in this material. The authors gratefully acknowledge financial support

Pressure and chemical substitution effects in the local atomic structure of BaFe2As2
The effects of K and Co substitutions and quasi-hydrostatic applied pressure
(P<9 GPa) in the local atomic structure of BaFe2As2, Ba(Fe{0.937}Co{0.063})2As2
and Ba{0.85}K{0.15}Fe2As2 superconductors were investigated by extended x-ray
absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements in the As K absorption edge. The
As-Fe bond length is found to be slightly reduced (<~ 0.01 Angstroms) by both
Co and K substitutions, without any observable increment in the corresponding
Debye Waller factor. Also, this bond is shown to be compressible (k =
3.3(3)x10^{-3} GPa^{-1}). The observed contractions of As-Fe bond under
pressure and chemical substitutions are likely related with a reduction of the
local Fe magnetic moments, and should be an important tuning parameter in the
phase diagrams of the Fe-based superconductors.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
