Bimagnon studies in cuprates with Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering at the O K edge. II - The doping effect in La2-xSrxCuO4
We present RIXS data at O K edge from La2-xSrxCuO4 vs. doping between x=0.10
and x=0.22 with attention to the magnetic excitations in the Mid-Infrared
region. The sampling done by RIXS is the same as in the undoped cuprates
provided the excitation is at the first pre-peak induced by doping. Note that
this excitation energy is about 1.5 eV lower than that needed to see bimagnons
in the parent compound. This approach allows the study of the upper region of
the bimagnon continuum around 450 meV within about one third of the Brilluoin
Zone around \Gamma. The results show the presence of damped bimagnons and of
higher even order spin excitations with almost constant spectral weight at all
the dopings explored here. The implications on high Tc studies are briefly
addressed
On the 2015 outburst of the EXor variable star V1118 Ori
After a long-lasting period of quiescence of about a decade, the source V1118
Ori, one of the most representative members of the EXor variables, is now
outbursting. Since the initial increase of the near-infrared flux of about 1
mag (JHK bands) registered on 2015 September 22, the source brightness has
remained fairly stable. We estimate DeltaV about 3 mag with respect to the
quiescence phase. An optical/near-IR low-resolution spectrum has been obtained
with the Large Binocular Telescope instruments MODS and LUCI2, and compared
with a spectrum of similar spectral resolution and sensitivity level taken
during quiescence. Together with the enhancement of the continuum, the outburst
spectrum presents a definitely higher number of emission lines, in particular
HI recombination lines of the Balmer, Paschen, and Brackett series, along with
bright permitted lines of several species, forbidden atomic lines, and CO
ro-vibrational lines. Both mass accretion and mass loss rates have
significantly increased (by to about an order of magnitude, mass accretion rate
= 1.2-4.8 10^-8 M_sun/yr, mass loss rate = 0.8-2 10^-9 M_sun/yr) with respect
to the quiescence phase. If compared with previous outbursts, the present one
appears less energetic. Alternatively, it could already be in the fading phase
(with the maximum brightness level reached when the source was not visible),
or, viceversa, still in the rising phase.Comment: Accepted ApJ Letter
Gotcha-I: A Multiview Human Videos Dataset
The growing need of security in large open spaces led to the need to use video capture of people in different context and illumination and with multiple biometric traits as head pose, body gait, eyes, nose, mouth, and further more. All these traits are useful for a multibiometric identification or a person re-identification in a video surveillance context. Body Worn Cameras (BWCs) are used by the police of different countries all around the word and their use is growing significantly. This raises the need to develop new recognition methods that consider multibiometric traits on person re-identification. The purpose of this work is to present a new video dataset called Gotcha-I. This dataset has been obtained using more mobile cameras to adhere to the data of BWCs. The dataset includes videos from 62 subjects in indoor and outdoor environments to address both security and surveillance problem. During these videos, subjects may have a different behavior in videos such as freely, path, upstairs, avoid the camera. The dataset is composed by 493 videos including a set of 180° videos for each face of the subjects in the dataset. Furthermore, there are already processed data, such as: the 3D model of the face of each subject with all the poses of the head in pitch, yaw and roll; and the body keypoint coordinates of the gait for each video frame. It’s also shown an application of gender recognition performed on Gotcha-I, confirming the usefulness and innovativeness of the proposed dataset
Gait Analysis for Gender Classification in Forensics
Gender Classification (GC) is a natural ability that belongs to the human beings. Recent improvements in computer vision provide the possibility to extract information for different classification/recognition purposes. Gender is a soft biometrics useful in video surveillance, especially in uncontrolled contexts such as low-light environments, with arbitrary poses, facial expressions, occlusions and motion blur. In this work we present a methodology for the construction of a gait analyzer. The methodology is divided into three major steps: (1) data extraction, where body keypoints are extracted from video sequences; (2) feature creation, where body features are constructed using body keypoints; and (3) classifier selection when such data are used to train four different classifiers in order to determine the one that best performs. The results are analyzed on the dataset Gotcha, characterized by user and camera either in motion
Hole-depletion of ladders in SrCuO induced by correlation effects
The hole distribution in SrCuO is studied by low
temperature polarization dependent O K Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine
Structure measurements and state of the art electronic structure calculations
that include core-hole and correlation effects in a mean-field approach.
Contrary to all previous analysis, based on semi-empirical models, we show that
correlations and antiferromagnetic ordering favor the strong chain
hole-attraction. For the remaining small number of holes accommodated on
ladders, leg-sites are preferred to rung-sites. The small hole affinity of
rung-sites explains naturally the 1D - 2D cross-over in the phase diagram of
(La,Y,Sr,Ca)CuOComment: 6 pages, 8 figure

Bimagnon studies in cuprates with Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering at the O K edge. I - An assessment on La2CuO4 and a comparison with the excitation at Cu L3 and Cu K edges
We assess the capabilities of magnetic Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering
(RIXS) at the O edge in undoped cuprates by taking La_{2}CuO_{4} as a
benchmark case, based on a series of RIXS measurements that we present here. By
combining the experimental results with basic theory we point out the
fingerprints of bimagnon in the O edge RIXS spectra. These are a dominant
peak around 450 meV, the almost complete absence of dispersion both with
and polarization and the almost constant intensity vs. the transferred
momentum with polarization. This behavior is quite different from Cu
edge RIXS giving a strongly dispersing bimagnon tending to zero at the
center of the Brillouin zone. This is clearly shown by RIXS measurements at the
Cu edge that we present. The Cu bimagnon spectra and those at Cu
edge - both from the literature and from our data - however, have the same
shape. These similarities and differences are understood in terms of different
sampling of the bimagnon continuum. This panorama points out the unique
possibilities offered by O RIXS in the study of magnetic excitations in
cuprates near the center of the BZ
Large Binocular Telescope view of the atmosphere of GJ1214b
The atmospheric composition and vertical structure of the super-Earth GJ1214b
has been a subject of debate since its discovery in 2009. Recent studies have
indicated that high-altitude clouds might mask the lower layers. However, some
data points that were gathered at different times and facilities do not fit
this picture, probably because of a combination of stellar activity and
systematic errors. We observed two transits of GJ1214b with the Large Binocular
Camera, the dual-channel camera at the Large Binocular Telescope. For the first
time, we simultaneously measured the relative planetary radius
at blue and red optical wavelengths (), thus
constraining the Rayleigh scattering on GJ1214b after correcting for stellar
activity effects. To the same purpose, a long-term photometric follow-up of the
host star was carried out with WiFSIP at STELLA, revealing a rotational period
that is significantly longer than previously reported. Our new unbiased
estimates of yield a flat transmission spectrum extending to shorter
wavelengths, thus confirming the cloudy atmosphere scenario for GJ1214b.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Published in A&A. Minor changes to

Analysis of short-term blood pressure variability in pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma patients
Data on short-term blood pressure variability (BPV), which is a well-established cardiovascular prognostic tool, in pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) patients is still lack and conflicting. We retrospectively evaluated 23 PPGL patients referred to our unit from 2010 to 2019 to analyze 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (24-h ABPM)-derived markers of short-term BPV, before and after surgical treatment. PPGL diagnosis was assessed according to guidelines and confirmed by histologic examination. The 24-h ABPM-derived markers of short-term BPV included: circadian pressure rhythm; standard deviation (SD) and weighted SD (wSD) of 24-h, daytime, and night-time systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP); average real variability (ARV) of 24-h, daytime, and night-time systolic and diastolic BP. 7 males and 16 females of 53 ± 18 years old were evaluated. After surgical resection of PPGL we found a significant decrease in 24-h systolic BP ARV (8.8 ± 1.6 vs. 7.6 ± 1.3 mmHg, p < 0.001), in 24-h diastolic BP ARV (7.5 ± 1.6 vs. 6.9 ± 1.4 mmHg, p = 0.031), and in wSD of 24-h diastolic BP (9.7 ± 2.0 vs 8.8 ± 2.1 mmHg, p = 0.050) comparing to baseline measurements. Moreover, baseline 24-h urinary metanephrines significantly correlated with wSD of both 24-h systolic and diastolic BP. Our study highlights as PPGL patients, after proper treatment, show a significant decrease in some short-term BPV markers, which might represent a further cardiovascular risk factor
Classifying foods in contexts: How adults categorize foods for different eating settings
This project examined adults\u27 food cognitions by applying schema theory to explain how adults categorized foods for different contexts. Qualitative interviews and repeated card sort activities for different eating contexts were conducted to elicit as many food categories as possible form 42 US adults. Participants labeled card sort piles with their own words, providing 991 card sort labels. Qualitative analysis of the labels resulted in the emergence of 12 category types. Personal-experience-based types were specific to the individual (e.g., Preference). Context-based types were related to situational aspects of eating episodes (e.g., Location). Food-based types were related to intrinsic properties of the foods (e.g., Physical characteristics). Different combinations of the 12 category types were used for different eating contexts. Personal-experience and context-based types were used most frequently overall. Some category types were used more frequently for specific contexts (e.g., Convenience for work contexts). Food-based taxonomic category types were used most frequently when no context was defined. Script-oriented categories were more often used in response to specific eating contexts. These findings provide a framework to consider how individuals classify foods in real-life eating contexts. Attention to personal-experience and context-based category types may help improve understanding of relationships between knowledge and food choice behaviors
