Tunable steady-state domain wall oscillator with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

We theoretically study domain wall oscillations upon the injection of a dc current through a geometrically constrained wire with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The oscillation frequency spectrum can be tuned by the injected current density, but additionally by the application of an external magnetic field independent of the power. The results of analytical calculations are supported by micromagnetic simulations based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The simple concept of our localized steady-state oscillator might prove useful as a nanoscale microwave generator with possible applications in telecommunication or for rf-assisted writing in magnetic hard drives.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Assessment of processing technologies which may improve the nutritional composition of dairy products – Overview of progress

    Get PDF
Among consumers there is a growing demand for food products with a natural nutritional-physiological advantage over comparable conventional products. As part of an EU funded project, ALP is examining the possible impact of processing on nutritionally valuable milk components, using the example of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA). The extent to which processing influences the CLA content of the end product was determined by literature research and own investigations of organic and conventional butter. Furthermore, new chemical, sensory-based and bio crystallization methods were evaluated by ALP and the University of Kassel to determine the oxidation stability of butter. In a further step the storage stability of CLA enriched and conventional butter was examined and the different methods will be compared. As a third objective a process for low-input CLA enrichment of milk fat (with a focus on alpine butter) has been developed. Since the process selected for the work is a physical enrichment process, it is accepted by international organic farming and food groups. Among the many benefits ascribed to CLA, it is believed to be an effective agent against cancer. The demand for foods with properties that promote human health is growing. The dairy industry has the opportunity to meet this demand by developing new dairy products with a nutritional-physiological function for the functional food market

Spin configurations in Co2FeAl0.4Si0.6 Heusler alloy thin film elements

We determine experimentally the spin structure of half-metallic Co2FeAl0.4Si0.6 Heusler alloy elements using magnetic microscopy. Following magnetic saturation, the dominant magnetic states consist of quasi-uniform configurations, where a strong influence from the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is visible. Heating experiments show the stability of the spin configuration of domain walls in confined geometries up to 800 K. The switching temperature for the transition from transverse to vortex walls in ring elements is found to increase with ring width, an effect attributed to structural changes and consequent changes in magnetic anisotropy, which start to occur in the narrower elements at lower temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Deep and lasting response and acquired resistance to BRAFV600E targeting in a low-grade ovarian cancer patient.

The treatment of BRAFV600E mutant melanoma has been revolutionized by BRAF inhibitors. Furthermore, the BRAF/MEK combination has shown further improvement in clinical outcomes in advanced and in adjuvant melanoma patients. In low-grade ovarian tumors, BRAF inhibitor use has been also proposed. Here we present a patient with an excellent, lasting response to BRAF therapy alone. At first progression, after more than two years on BRAF monotherapy, we could not identify any molecular mechanisms explaining resistance. After a switch to dual BRAF/MEK therapy, the patient responded. However, despite the initial response clinical the patient again progressed, this time with the appearance of a KRAS G12C mutation, which could not be overcome by BRAF/MEK therapy. We provide evidence that BRAF inhibitor alone can be highly beneficial in BRAF mutant low-grade ovarian tumors and the resistance mechanisms are similar to that of other BRAF mutant tumors, including in melanoma

Achiral tilted domain walls in perpendicularly magnetized nanowires

    Get PDF
Perpendicularly magnetized nanowires exhibit distinct domain wall types depending on the geometry. Wide wires contain Bloch walls, and narrow wires Néel walls. Here, the transition region is investigated by direct imaging of the wall structure using high-resolution spin-polarized scanning electron microscopy. An achiral intermediate wall type is discovered that is unpredicted by established theoretical models. With the help of micromagnetic simulations, the formation of this wall type is explained
