Gray Wolves in Washington: Possible Habitat and Corridors for Movement

Introduction:Increasing the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) population in Washington state plays two important roles. First, they are an important part of many ecosystems as they are a keystone species. This means that they are a top predator and their absence has reverberating effects on the rest of the ecosystem. As seen at Yellowstone State Park in Wyoming, elk populations ran rampant for many years and reached their peak of roughly 25,000 individuals in 1988 (Kauffman et. al. 2008). The issue lies in the grazing that these elk partake in of a vital habitat producer, Aspen saplings. In 1995 thirty one Canadian Gray Wolves were released into Yellowstone in an attempt to reestablish the population and help curb ungulate populations (Larsen 2006). The park acts as a perfect ‘laboratory’ to monitor the effects wolves have on elk populations and on vegetation recovery levels. Second, Gray Wolves have been on the Washington Endangered Species list since 1967. This is attributed to the mass hunting and elimination of these animals that were largely perceived as nothing more than pests, mostly by owners of livestock. Washington State, as of December 2011, currently has a Gray Wolf population of twenty seven individuals and only three active breeding pairs (WDFW 2011 & Figure 1). The purpose of this study is to see if Washington has viable habitat for them and if so, how the Gray Wolves can move from each of these habitat islands.https://digitalcommons.tacoma.uw.edu/gis_projects/1052/thumbnail.jp

Health Effects of Job Insecurity among Employees in Swiss General Population

Objectives. To investigate at national level the association between health and the social distress in which the whole employed population is plunged as a consequence of job insecurity. Design. Cross-sectional study. Setting. Switzerland. Subjects. Individuals working full or part time as employees drawn from a random sample (N=2024) of the Swiss general population interviewed by phone. Main outcome measures. Prevalence rates of ten self reported health and health related behaviour indicators according to three levels of perceived job insecurity (low, middle, high). Odds ratios estimated with logistic regression adjusted for relevant respondents characteristics (sex, age, education, having a chronic disease, working full or part-time and in public or private field). Results. One employee out of 10 experienced a high level of job insecurity, out of five a middle level while about 2/3 have no or a very low perception of job insecurity. The results clearly show that psychosocial stress induced in general employed population by fear of unemployment has a negative impact on the individual health and related health behaviour. A positive "dose-response" gradient was found between rise in job insecurity level's and the indicators investigated, suggesting a linear deterioration of health. In particular, employees in high insecurity group, compared to those in low one, have significantly higher odds ratios for seven indicators out of ten [not being in good health OR 1.6 (CI 1.0-2.7); high level of subjective stress OR 1.6 (CI 1.1-2.3); low self-esteem OR 2.9 (CI 1.5-5.7); daily or weekly consumption of tranquillisers OR 2.1 (CI 1.0-4.3); regular low-back pain OR 2.0 (CI 1.3-3.2); regular smoking OR 1.6 (CI 1.0-2.4); avoiding medical consultation or caring for themselves for fear of missing work OR 3.4 (CI 1.9-5.9)]. Employees with higher educational status seem to have more difficulties than less educated in coping with job insecurity. Conclusions. There is a positive association between health status and health related behaviour and social distress due to perception of job insecurity. Fear of unemployment seems to have stronger unfavourable effect in high educated employees than in less educated, probably because investment in career and in personal expectations are, in that group, generally higher. Although this cross-sectional study carried out at national level do not reach the "gold standard" represented by longitudinal ones, the results are fully consistent with those of few analysis on job insecurity carried out prospectively at firm level. Recommendations. In terms of concrete actions the main recommendations stemming from this study could be [i] to break the wall of silence generally erected around studies showing the positive relationship between job insecurity and deterioration of health, in order to promote a public and political consciousness in favour of less excluding and more solidary social and economic choices and [ii] to promote a systematic measure of health impact of policies and legislations with particular emphasis on those affecting labour market and work environment.economic development; labour market; unemployment; job insecurity; deprivation; health; public health; health impact assessment

Hegel on Marriage: The Importance of the Wedding Ceremony

    Get PDF
In the Philosophy of Right, Hegel insists that a marriage is only established after a wedding ceremony has taken place but he provides no satisfactory justification for thinking this. In this paper, I attempt to provide some justifications for him. I advocate an interpretation of Hegel that (1) understands the declaration of consent uttered in the wedding ceremony to be a performative act whose force is what transforms a relationship into a marriage and that (2) understands Hegel’s general concept of personality to inform his requirement that the agreement to marry be declared publicly

    Quantification of acetylated tubulin

The acetylation/deacetylation of Lys40 of the α-subunit is an important posttranslational modification undergone by tubulin during the life of a cell. Many previous studies have addressed the physiological role of this acetylation process using various approaches based on changes of acetylated tubulin (AcTubulin) content. In most of these studies, however, the actual amounts of AcTubulin were not known and it was difficult to draw conclusions. We present here a simple method to estimate the percentage of AcTubulin relative to total tubulin. The method is based on acetylation of the tubulin sample with acetic anhydride, Western blotting stained by antiAcTubulin antibody, and comparison of the optical density of the AcTubulin band with that of a corresponding sample that was not chemically acetylated.

The social-legal construction of the poor childhood: Social-historical analysis in the discourse of Córdoba

    Get PDF
We intend to perform an analysis of the academic production of the National University of Córdoba from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century that deals with the problem of the illegitimate, abandoned, delinquent childhood, from a critical approach of the racism theory. One of the displacements this category underwent during the passed century is that it went beyond the field of race and it included women, young people... This aspect involves the discrimination of poor children, that have been confined to the place of the other. Racist characters can be traced in the discursive-political practices that have created the category of childhood, being plausible to successfully perform this task by considering as the object of analysis the theses, dissertations... that discuss this subject matter in Córdoba. We will try to reconstruct the voices that, due to the sense of social belonging of the actors, refer to a certain class ideology. This provides a study of the constitution of the Argentine ruling elite, when the problem of social control, or the social matter, was placed in the middle of all speculations. Analyzing both the characteristics of the discursive racism of the Argentine elite and the complex process of inferiorization of childhood that the discursive racism entails will allow to establish categories for an analysis of modern racism. In this way, elements to counteract the practices of domination will be presented. In order to do this, it is necessary to historicize them, reconstructing the discourses that support them and allow their continuity, since they persist in their functionality.Fil: Bisig, Nidia Elinor del C..
