Differences in the total number of colonies that resist synthetic stomach environment of homemade and different brand of kefir samples
The aim of my extended essay is to investigate the probiotic benefits of homemade kefir and the four different brands (Ülker İçim, Altınkılıç, AOÇ, Eker) of kefir which can be easily found in the supermarkets exposed to synthetic stomach environment.
The research question is: “Will there be a significant difference between the number of alive bacteria in homemade kefir and the four different brands of kefir bought from the store, with regard to their probiotic effects after incubating the cell suspensions from each sample at pH 2 by using Cell Viability Assay method?”
My hypothesis is: “There is a considerable difference between the number of alive bacteria in homemade kefir and the four different brands of kefir bought from the supermarket after being exposed to stomach acid, known as hydrochloric acid. Homemade kefir will have the highest number of alive bacteria that resist stomach acid, while the other kefir types which are sold in the supermarkets will have lesser number of alive bacteria.”
For the purpose of examining the hypothesis and answering the research question, Cell Viability Assay method was used. All homogenized 10 ml of five kefir samples were exposed to hydrochloric acid (pH: 2) and incubated for four hours at 37 °C. After incubation, serial dilutions were prepared with kefir samples and spread all over the petri dishes. The dishes were incubated for 72 hours at 30°C in an incubator. Lastly, the number of colonies were counted and results were compared to each other.
The final results of the experiment indicated that, Ülker İçim has the highest mean number of alive bacteria colonies (313) left after being exposed to hydrochloric acid. The homemade kefir which was expected to have the largest number of alive bacteria, is in the second rank (296). Altınkılıç (strawberry flavoured) is in the third place (144). AOÇ has taken the fourth place (118), followed by Eker which has the lowest number of alive bacteria (49).These results showed that the homemade kefir doesn’t have the highest number of alive bacteria after being treated with hydrochloric acid and this doesn’t support the hypothesis. Hence, the mean results demonstrate that there is slight difference between Ülker İçim and the homemade kefir with regard to the number of alive bacteria. According to the ANOVA test results, there is a significant mean difference between the number of alive bacteria colonies in homemade and four different brands of kefir. The p-value of the test is 6.21x10-18, which is smaller than 0.05

The pre-service teachers’ competency perceptions regarding technology planning
AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the pre-service teachers’ competency perceptions regarding technology planning and to evaluate them in terms of gender and grades. In line with this aim, the questionnaire with 29 items was used to collect data from 122 students attending to the Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technologies. According to results, it was found that the students perceived themselves as competent about technology planning process; and there was no significant difference between groups in terms of gender, however the 3rd and 4th grade students perceived themselves competent more significantly than 2nd grade students
Seismic analysis of offshore wind turbine including fluid-structure-soil interaction
This paper presents the seismic response analysis of offshore wind turbines subjected to multi-support seismic excitation by using a three dimensional numerical finite element model considering viscous boundaries. The sea water-offshore wind turbine-soil interaction system is modeled by the Lagrangian (displacement-based) fluid and solid-quadrilateral-isoparametric finite elements. The research conducts a parametric study to estimate the effects of different foundation soil types on the seismic behavior of the offshore wind turbine coupled interaction system. The results obtained for different cases are compared with each other
Impacts of Organizational Culture and Leadership on Business Performance: A Case Study on Acquisitions
AbstractTransformational leadership and culture are identified as providing a ground for long-term organizational success during organizational changes. In literature, corporate culture and leadership come up as major factors in success of organizational transformation process in mergers and acquisitions as they have great influence on organizational structures, processes and hence performance of companies. In this context, this study aims to find out the organizational cultural and leadership characteristics of a high-tech telecommunication company in Turkey, that had been successful in protecting its competitive position and business performance despite the challenges of cultural and organizational change that are brought by a acquisition phase. In the research, elements of leadership and culture have been identified with relevance to transformational leadership and culture through surveys conducted within the company; they’re described in detail considering advantages and disadvantages of such elements during organizational restructuring. This case study points out that transformational culture and transformational leadership stand as critical strengths for achieving the desired business performance during major organizational changes such as merger and acquisitions
Silicon-CMOS Compatible In-Situ CCVD Grown Graphene Transistors with Ultra-High On/Off-Current Ratio
By means of catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) in-situ grown
monolayer graphene field-effect transistors (MoLGFETs) and bilayer graphene
transistors (BiLGFETs) are realized directly on oxidized silicon substrate
without the need to transfer graphene layers. In-situ grown MoLGFETs exhibit
the expected Dirac point together with the typical low on/off-current ratios.
In contrast, BiLGFETs possess unipolar p-type device characteristics with an
extremely high on/off-current ratio up to 1E7. The complete fabrication process
is silicon CMOS compatible. This will allow a simple and low-cost integration
of graphene devices for nanoelectronic applications in a hybrid silicon CMOS
environment.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
The concept of halal recreation
The halal industry has developed rapidly in recent times. This development is seen in different areas
such as halal travel, halal food, halal clothing, halal tourism. The fact that the concept of halal takes
place in different subjects within the industry is important in terms of eliminating the shortcomings
in other fields. The concept of halal recreation was identified in order to fill the gap in this context. In
addition, this research examines the historical process of the concept of leisure in order to reveal the
concept of halal recreation, and it has been determined in which religions the concepts of halal and
haram are. As a result of these examinations, the concept of halal recreation briefly; The individual
can participate freely, without any profit motive, individually or as a group, actively, passively or
semi-actively, within the time period remaining from external obligations, adhering to the norms and
values of the society of which he/she is a member, having fun, rest, physical, physical, mental and it
can be expressed as activities in which he/she participates in order to renew himself/herself spiritually
In this paper, a continuous contact problem for two bonded elastic layers resting on a Winkler foundation and loaded by uniformly distributed load is solved using finite element method. Body forces of elastic layers are neglected in the problem. Thickness in z-direction is taken to be unit. The finite element model of the problem is constituted using ANSYS software and the two dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. By reason of the fact that maximum value of the normal stress is on the symmetry axis, sx and sy stresses on the symmetry axis are determined for various dimensionless quantities. Finally, the results obtained from finite element method are verified by comparison with the analytical results
