Prevalence of symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and associated features in Swiss military recruits: a self-report survey
Background
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), defined as the obsessive idea that some aspect of one’s own body or appearance is severely flawed/deformed, is relatively common in the general population and has been shown to have strong associations with mood and anxiety disorders and substance abuse disorders. Furthermore, a previous study on symptoms of BDD among people in the military showed that muscles are an important area of preoccupation. Hence, this study aimed to 1. assess the prevalence of BDD symptoms in Swiss military recruits, 2. specify the areas of preoccupation, and 3. analyze associated features (depression and alcohol/drug abuse).
Method
A total of 126 Swiss male military recruits (age: M = 20.12, SD = 1.09, range: 18–24) were examined using self-report measurements to assess symptoms of BDD, depression, alcohol/drug abuse.
Results
The results showed that symptoms of BDD were relatively common (9.5% reached the cutoff value for probable BDD, 84% reported some symptoms), with the muscles as the most common area of preoccupation. A positive correlation (r = .38, p < .001) between depressive symptoms and symptoms of BDD was found, thus no correlation between alcohol/drug abuse and symptoms of BDD.
Conclusion
The results indicate a need to develop and implement measures for prevention (e.g. raising awareness among the military) and intervention in this specific population
Interaction of periodontitis and orthodontic tooth movement-an in vitro and in vivo study.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of this in vitro and in vivo study was to investigate the interaction of periodontitis and orthodontic tooth movement on interleukin (IL)-6 and C-X-C motif chemokine 2 (CXCL2).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The effect of periodontitis and/or orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) on alveolar bone and gingival IL-6 and CXCL2 expressions was studied in rats by histology and RT-PCR, respectively. The animals were assigned to four groups (control, periodontitis, OTM, and combination of periodontitis and OTM). The IL-6 and CXCL2 levels were also studied in human gingival biopsies from periodontally healthy and periodontitis subjects by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Additionally, the synthesis of IL-6 and CXCL2 in response to the periodontopathogen Fusobacterium nucleatum and/or mechanical strain was studied in periodontal fibroblasts by RT-PCR and ELISA.
RESULTS
Periodontitis caused an increase in gingival levels of IL-6 and CXCL2 in the animal model. Moreover, orthodontic tooth movement further enhanced the bacteria-induced periodontal destruction and gingival IL-6 gene expression. Elevated IL-6 and CXCL2 gingival levels were also found in human periodontitis. Furthermore, mechanical strain increased the stimulatory effect of F. nucleatum on IL-6 protein in vitro.
CONCLUSIONS
Our study suggests that orthodontic tooth movement can enhance bacteria-induced periodontal inflammation and thus destruction and that IL-6 may play a pivotal role in this process.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Orthodontic tooth movement should only be performed after periodontal therapy. In case of periodontitis relapse, orthodontic therapy should be suspended until the periodontal inflammation has been successfully treated and thus the periodontal disease is controlled again
Glutaminyl cyclase contributes to the formation of focal and diffuse pyroglutamate (pGlu)-Aβ deposits in hippocampus via distinct cellular mechanisms
In the hippocampal formation of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, both focal and diffuse deposits of Aβ peptides appear in a subregion- and layer-specific manner. Recently, pyroglutamate (pGlu or pE)-modified Aβ peptides were identified as a highly pathogenic and seeding Aβ peptide species. Since the pE modification is catalyzed by glutaminyl cyclase (QC) this enzyme emerged as a novel pharmacological target for AD therapy. Here, we reveal the role of QC in the formation of different types of hippocampal pE-Aβ aggregates. First, we demonstrate that both, focal and diffuse pE-Aβ deposits are present in defined layers of the AD hippocampus. While the focal type of pE-Aβ aggregates was found to be associated with the somata of QC-expressing interneurons, the diffuse type was not. To address this discrepancy, the hippocampus of amyloid precursor protein transgenic mice was analysed. Similar to observations made in AD, focal (i.e. core-containing) pE-Aβ deposits originating from QC-positive neurons and diffuse pE-Aβ deposits not associated with QC were detected in Tg2576 mouse hippocampus. The hippocampal layers harbouring diffuse pE-Aβ deposits receive multiple afferents from QC-rich neuronal populations of the entorhinal cortex and locus coeruleus. This might point towards a mechanism in which pE-Aβ and/or QC are being released from projection neurons at hippocampal synapses. Indeed, there are a number of reports demonstrating the reduction of diffuse, but not of focal, Aβ deposits in hippocampus after deafferentation experiments. Moreover, we demonstrate in neurons by live cell imaging and by enzymatic activity assays that QC is secreted in a constitutive and regulated manner. Thus, it is concluded that hippocampal pE-Aβ plaques may develop through at least two different mechanisms: intracellularly at sites of somatic QC activity as well as extracellularly through seeding at terminal fields of QC expressing projection neurons
Complete and incomplete spin transitions in 1D chain iron(II) compounds.
The synthesis and characterisation of two new octahedral iron(II) SCO coordination polymers [FeL1(bimm)] (1) and [FeL2(bppa)](MeOH)0.5 (2) (L1 = [3,30]-[1,2- phenylenebis-(iminomethylidyne)bis(4-phenyl-,4-butanedionato)(2-)-N,N0,O2,O20], L2 = [E,E]-[{diethyl 2,20-1,2- phenylenebis(iminomethylidyne)bis(3-oxo-3-phenylpropanato)}(2-)-N,N0,O3,O30], bimm = bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methane and bppa = 1,3-bis(pyridine-4-yl)propane) is presented.
Results from X-ray structure analysis at different temperatures revealed in the case of 1 that the transition from a gradual to a cooperative SCO with a 5 K wide hysteresis is due to an increase of the short intermolecular contacts, which exceed a certain threshold for the cooperative effect. In the case of compound 2 an incomplete spin transition with a 4 K wide hysteresis was observed. The low temperature wMT product remains constant at a value typical for a mixed HS/LS state in stepwise spin transitions. BDD-NET – Ein internetbasiertes Programm bei Körperunzufriedenheit zur niedrigschwelligen Behandlung der körperdysmorphen Störung für den deutschen Sprachraum
Hintergrund: Die Körperdysmorphe Störung (KDS) ist eine schwerwiegende psychische Störung, die mit starker Scham sowie Leidensdruck und Funktionseinschränkungen einhergeht. Kognitive Verhaltenstherapie stellt die aktuell wirksamste evidenzbasierte Behandlungsmethode dar. Aufgrund zahlreicher Behandlungsbarrieren kommen KDS-Betroffene jedoch selten in der psychotherapeutischen Behandlung an, weshalb niedrigschwelligen Behandlungsmethoden (z.B. aus dem Bereich E-Mental-Health) eine wichtige Rolle zukommen könnten. Erste internationale Studien weisen auf die Wirksamkeit von E-Mental-Health-Angeboten bei KDS hin.
Material und Methoden: Dieser Beitrag gibt eine Ăśbersicht zur bisherigen Umsetzung und Evidenz von E-Mental-Health-Angeboten fĂĽr KDS und stellt die ins Deutsche ĂĽbersetzte Version des BDD-NET-Programms, eines internetbasierten, manualiÂsierten, therapeutenbegleiteten Interventionsprogramms, fĂĽr die KDS vor, welches aus dem Englischen fĂĽr den deutschen Sprachraum ĂĽbersetzt und adaptiert wurde.
Ergebnisse: BDD-NET umfasst acht Module, die binnen einer 12-wöchigen Behandlung online bearbeitet werden. Die Online-Plattform bietet für die Patienten die Möglichkeit, mit dem BDD-NET-Therapeuten mittels persönlicher Nachrichten zu kommunizieren. Sämtliche Materialien wurden aus dem Englischen übersetzt und vor allem in kultureller Hinsicht adaptiert.
Schlussfolgerungen: BDD-NET könnte ein wichtiger Baustein in der Versorgung von KDS-Betroffenen sein. Die Evaluation steht für den deutschen Sprachraum noch aus. Auf Besonderheiten des Settings (z.B. Störungseinsicht als möglicher Behandlungsfokus) sowie praktische Implikationen wird eingegangen. Zudem werden Voraussetzungen und Rahmenbedingungen für eine perspektivische Dissemination diskutiert
Advancements in the fabrication and characterization of actinide targets for superheavy element production
The heaviest elements can exclusively be produced in actinide-target based nuclear fusion reactions with intense heavy-ion beams. Ever more powerful accelerators deliver beams of continuously increasing intensity, which brings targets of current technology to their limits and beyond. We motivate efforts to produce targets with improved properties, which calls for a better understanding of targets produced by molecular plating, the current standard method. Complementary analytical methods will help shedding more light on their chemical and physical changes in the beam. Special emphasis is devoted to the aspect of the optimum target thickness and the choice of the backing material

Endemic species predation by the introduced smooth-billed ani in Galápagos

It is known to predate upon a range of native and endemic species, and is a potential vector for the spread of invasive plants and parasites. Here we report previously undocumented examples of smooth-billed ani predation in Galápagos, including that of an endemic racer snake and a scorpion. We highlight the possibility of smooth-billed anis having a serious impact on the endemic Galápagos carpenter bee, a major pollinator, as well as native and endemic Lepidopterans and other invertebrates. In addition, we report smooth-billed ani predation of other introduced species and note the importance of further research on the wide-scale impacts of smooth-billed anis in Galápagos and their role within the archipelago’s ecological networks

Der vorliegende Band initiiert ein interdisziplinäres Gespräch zu der Frage, unter welchen Bedingungen sich
Formenrepertoires und Semantiken von statuarischen Darstellungen, Sarkophagen und anderen medialen Figurationen im Spannungsfeld von Persistenz und Wandel historisch tradieren. Dabei wird das Problem von Formkonstanz und Bedeutungswandel in Fallstudien aus der doppelten Perspektive der Archäologie und der Medientheorie behandelt. Im gemeinsamen Fokus steht die Aussage von Bildentwürfen und Figurentypen im Wandel von Zeit und Aufstellungskontexten, aber auch im Wechsel von Formaten und Medien. Wenngleich Figuren und Darstellungsschemata aus einem bestimmten Anlass, für einen bestimmten Kontext und mit einer spezifischen Bedeutung geschaffen worden sind, konnten sie in einer sekundären Verwendung neu kontextualisiert und dadurch mit neuen Bedeutungen aufgeladen werden. Gerade Übertragungen dieser Art, bei denen die ursprünglich intendierten inhaltlichen Bezüge sich verschoben oder sogar vollständig verloren gingen, sicherten vielfach die nachhaltige Rezeption morder Werke
Revisionen des Porträts. Jenseits von Mimesis und Repräsentation
Noch immer wird das Phänomen ›Porträt‹ im kunsthistorischen Diskurs zumeist unter Begrifflichkeiten wie Identität, Individualität, Repräsentation oder Ähnlichkeit diskutiert. Zeitgenössische amimetische, konzeptuelle und performative Porträtformen werden mit solchen Konzepten jedoch nicht mehr vollständig eingeholt. Der Band befragt deshalb einerseits kritisch diese traditionellen, mimetischen Begriffe anhand von Fallstudien. Andererseits werden ihnen dynamische und offene Konzepte (teils aus Nachbardisziplinen) wie Spur, Berührung, Fraktalität, Defazialisierung oder Dividualität an die Seite gestellt, um den kunsthistorischen Porträt-Begriff in einem fachübergreifenden Diskurs aufzufächern, der auch die Digitalisierung umfasst. ›Porträt‹ wird somit explizit als Konstruktion, self-fashioning und konzeptuelle Praxis des Performativen betrachtet
