    Partnership, ownership and control: the impact of corporate governance on employment relations

    Prevailing patterns of dispersed share ownership and rules of corporate governance for UK listed companies appear to constrain the ability of managers to make credible, long-term commitments to employees of the kind needed to foster effective labour-management partnerships. We present case study evidence which suggests that such partnerships can nevertheless emerge where product market conditions and the regulatory environment favour a stakeholder orientation. Proactive and mature partnerships may also be sustained where the board takes a strategic approach to mediating between the claims of different stakeholder groups, institutional investors are prepared to take a long-term view of their holdings, and strong and independent trade unions are in a position to facilitate organisational change

    Quantitative receptor autoradiography methods have been widely used over the last three decades to study the distribution and physiological role of a receptor in various tissues. This review provides an overview of in vivo and in vitro receptor autoradiography methods and their advantages as well as disadvantages in the study of receptors in the central nervous system. Comparison with immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization methods is also highlighted in relation to the study of a given receptor in the nervous sytem

    Grooving to the same tunes? : learning, training and productive systems in the aerobics studio

    Closing the productivity gap with other nations has become a mantra of public policy in the UK. Promoting participation in learning and training is seen as the principal means of narrowing the gap. While tracking episodes of training is relatively easy, it is not clear what is learnt, by whom and why. This article examines these questions among a specific occupational group - exercise to music instructors - whose numbers have grown significantly in recent years. It identifies two productive systems through which these aerobic classes are delivered. Each has different consequences for learning. Under one regime, training expands horizons and develops abilities, while under the second instructors are taught to conform and follow scripts written by others.The article argues that 'training' can lead to different learning outcomes and that these are best understood through an analysis of the productive systems in which training and learning takes place
