Subjective rating scales as a workload
A multidimensional bipolar-adjective rating scale is employed as a subjective measure of operator workload in the performance of a one-axis tracking task. The rating scale addressed several dimensions of workload, including cognitive, physical, and perceptual task loading as well as fatigue and stress effects. Eight subjects performed a one-axis tracking task (with six levels of difficulty) and rated these tasks on several workload dimensions. Performance measures were tracking error RMS (root-mean square) and the standard deviation of control stick output. Significant relationships were observed between these performance measures and skill required, task complexity, attention level, task difficulty, task demands, and stress level

Weight management for people with learning disabilities: direct care staff understanding and helping behaviours
This study explored the application of Weiner’s attribution models of helping behaviour to care staff working with overweight people with learning disabilities.
Staff were asked to have a client in mind who was significantly overweight and to complete self-reports of their attributions, affect, optimism and willingness to help the person with their weight.
The study found that staff rated their clients’ weight as being attributed slightly more to internal factors than external factors, being low in controllability and high in stability. Staff reported low levels of positive and negative emotion but high levels of sympathy, optimism and willingness to help. No associations were found between attributions or affect and willingness to help. Only optimism was associated with willingness to help. The findings did not support the applicability of Weiner’s attribution models to staff supporting overweight people with learning disabilities. These findings contribute to the inconsistent literature on the applicability of Weiner’s model to staff helping in LD services.
Future research should clarify whether willingness to help relates to effective health helping strategies and to explore this further in service contexts.
The clinical implications for staff training include enhancing staff’s optimism in health change and providing skills in constructively engaging client’s in healthier behaviours
Competing Quantum Orderings in Cuprate Superconductors: A Minimal Model
We present a minimal model for cuprate superconductors. At the unrestricted
mean-field level, the model produces homogeneous superconductivity at large
doping, striped superconductivity in the underdoped regime and various
antiferromagnetic phases at low doping and for high temperatures. On the
underdoped side, the superconductor is intrinsically inhomogeneous and global
phase coherence is achieved through Josephson-like coupling of the
superconducting stripes. The model is applied to calculate experimentally

Decoupling control technology for medium STOL transports
The advanced control technology is considered that is necessary to cope with the medium STOL transport landing problem and, in particular, the necessity to decouple with active control techniques. It is shown that the need to decouple is independent of the powered lift concept but that the provisioning for decoupling is most greatly dependent on the preassumed piloting technique. The implications of decoupling and active control techniques with respect to pilot technique options, handling quality criteria, flight control mechanization, and the use of piloted simulation as a design tool, are also discussed
NATURAL HISTORY AND MERISTICS OF AN ALLOPATRIC POPULATION OF RED CORNSNAKES, PANTHEROPHIS GUTTATUS (LINNAEUS, 1766) IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY, USA
Life history, morphological variation, and basic biology of Pantherophis guttatus (Linnaeus, 1766), the Red Cornsnake, are not well known, particularly for the allopatric populations in Kentucky. To address some of the information gaps for this species, we report field observations, including activity patterns, reproduction, and meristics of P. guttatus in Kentucky. In 2003 and 2004 we conducted field surveys using drift fences, artificial cover, manual searching, and driving on roads and captured 101 P. guttatus in Edmonson and Hart counties, Kentucky. We found that artificial cover was the best method of detection with 77% of snakes captured using this method. Numbers of encounters peaked in April-May and August-September suggesting bimodal activity patterns similar to other colubrid snakes. Males had signifi cantly higher subcaudal scale counts than females while females had significantly higher ventral scale counts than males. We detected more individuals in 2003 than in 2004, most likely influenced by severe drought conditions in Kentucky during 2004. Size-class distribution of snakes was skewed towards large individuals (> 70 cm SVL). The absence of individuals in juvenile size classes (30 cm -70 cm) may be an artifact of lower detection probabilities for smaller size classes, different habitat use by juveniles, or may indicate low recruitment
INTEGRAL discovery of unusually long broad-band X-ray activity from the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient IGR J18483-0311
We report on a broad-band X-ray study (0.5-250 keV) of the Supergiant Fast
X-ray Transient IGR J18483-0311 using archival INTEGRAL data and a new targeted
XMM-Newton observation. Our INTEGRAL investigation discovered for the first
time an unusually long X-ray activity (3-60 keV) which continuously lasted for
at least 11 days, i.e. a significant fraction (about 60%) of the entire orbital
period, and spanned orbital phases corresponding to both periastron and
apastron passages. This prolongated X-ray activity is at odds with the much
shorter durations marking outbursts from classical SFXTs especially above 20
keV, as such it represents a departure from their nominal behavior and it adds
a further extreme characteristic to the already extreme SFXT IGR J18483-0311.
Our IBIS/ISGRI high energy investigation (100-250 keV) of archival outbursts
activity from the source showed that the recently reported hint of a possible
hard X-ray tail is not real and it is likely due to noisy background. The new
XMM-Newton targeted observation did not detect any sign of strong X-ray
outburst activity from the source despite being performed close to its
periastron passage, on the contrary IGR J18483-0311 was caught during the
common intermediate X-ray state with a low luminosity value of 3x10^33 erg s^-1
(0.5-10 keV). We discuss all the reported results in the framework of both
spherically symmetric clumpy wind scenario and quasi-spherical settling
