    The effectiveness of blended learning in basic life support training among nursing students: A systematic review

    Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is a global health problem and poses challenges in various fields, including education. Some training programs such as Basic Life Support (BLS) training need to adapt to new policies, which are physical and social distancing. Blended learning by combining face-to-face with online training, may help achieve BLS competencies for health care professionals, including nursing students. This systematic review was conducted to explore blended learning effectiveness in BLS training for nursing student populations. The electronic search strategy was conducted from PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane for the years 2010 to 2020 with full text in English. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines. The initial search yielded 240 studies, and six of those studies were eventually included. The results reported there were three blended learning models appeared, including face to face learning combined with e-learning website, combined with video-based, and combined with computer-based simulations. With an intervention duration of four hours to two weeks, there was an indication of several improving outcomes, including skills, knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, problem-solving abilities, and willingness to perform resuscitation. Furthermore, the skill outcome is significantly more effective in blended learning of face-to-face models combined with the e-learning website and combined with computer-based simulations. The knowledge outcome parameter likely is the most effective from all of three blended learning models. These findings imply that BLS training needs to use blended learning models by modifying the training modules, facilities, and infrastructure as consideration.   Keywords: Basic life support, blended learning, nursing students, systematic revie

    Is Instructional Scaffolding a Better Strategy for Teaching Writing to EFL Learners? A Functional MRI Study in Healthy Young Adults

    To test the scaffolding theory when applied to the teaching and learning of writing English as a foreign language, this cross-sectional study was conducted to collect physiological data. A total of 53 participants were randomly assigned into two groups, and brain activity was investigated during a guided-writing task using storytelling pictures. The writing task was further divided into four parts using graded levels of difficulty. The experimental group performed tasks in sequence from easy to difficult, whereas the comparison group performed the tasks at random. Outcomes included handwriting assessments and fMRI measurements. Writing outcome assessments were analyzed using SPSS, and scanned images were analyzed using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) software. The results revealed a positive learning effect associated with scaffolding instruction. The experimental group performed better during the writing tasks, and the fMRI images showed less intense and weaker reactions in the language processing region than were observed in the comparison group. The fMRI results also presented the experimental group with reduced motor and cognitive functions when writing in English. This study provides insight regarding brain activity during writing tasks in humans and may have implications for English-language instruction

    Ten golden rules for optimal antibiotic use in hospital settings: the WARNING call to action

    Antibiotics are recognized widely for their benefits when used appropriately. However, they are often used inappropriately despite the importance of responsible use within good clinical practice. Effective antibiotic treatment is an essential component of universal healthcare, and it is a global responsibility to ensure appropriate use. Currently, pharmaceutical companies have little incentive to develop new antibiotics due to scientific, regulatory, and financial barriers, further emphasizing the importance of appropriate antibiotic use. To address this issue, the Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery established an international multidisciplinary task force of 295 experts from 115 countries with different backgrounds. The task force developed a position statement called WARNING (Worldwide Antimicrobial Resistance National/International Network Group) aimed at raising awareness of antimicrobial resistance and improving antibiotic prescribing practices worldwide. The statement outlined is 10 axioms, or “golden rules,” for the appropriate use of antibiotics that all healthcare workers should consistently adhere in clinical practice

    A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on the effect of serious games on people with dementia

    Background: An increase in dementia prevalence has been accompanied by increasing interest in new rehabilitation methods, such as serious games. Serious games hold the potential to postpone functional and cognitive declines in people with dementia by increasing their independence and engagement; however, the efficacy of serious games remains underexplored. This review was conducted to quantify the effects of serious games in people with dementia, including several newly published trials, with the hopes of contributing to evidence-based practice by offering support for clinical decision-making. Methods: Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the impacts of game-based intervention programs compared with conventional therapy on cognitive function, instrumental and non-instrumental activities of daily living, or depression among people with dementia were included in this review. Meta-analyses were performed to determine the pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) of each outcome using a random-effects model. Results: The final search identified 12 studies that met our criteria. Overall, serious games were found to improve cognitive function (pooled SMD: 0.34; 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.61) and alleviated depression (pooled SMD: -0.131; 95% CI: -1.85 to -0.77) in people with dementia. Conclusions: Serious games improve cognitive function and reduce depression in people with dementia. Future studies in this field should aim to evaluate and determine the long-term effect of these games

    Robotic arm use for upper limb rehabilitation after stroke: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

    Abstract Several studies have reported the effects of robotic arms on improving upper limb function in patients with stroke. However, previous studies have reported inconsistent findings that may lead to incorrect applications of robotic arm use. Six databases were searched for relevant randomized controlled trials. Meta‐analyses were performed for upper limb performance measures, including subgroup analysis of pooled upper limb rehabilitation data such as stroke stage and intervention delivery dose. Furthermore, the Cochrane risk‐of‐bias tool for randomized trials version 2 (RoB 2) and sensitivity analysis were used to assess methodology and determine publication bias. The final analysis included 18 studies. Robotic arms improved upper limb and hand function in patients with stroke. Subgroup analysis revealed that robotic arm interventions lasting 30–60 min per session significantly improved upper limb function. However, no significant improvement was observed in shoulder and elbow or wrist and hand movements. This review may help develop applicable rehabilitation robots and collaboration between clinicians

    Effects of Electrical Stimulation of Acupoints on Xerostomia for Patients Who Undergo Hemodialysis

    Xerostomia plays a major role in higher interdialytic weight gain (IDWG), which causes cardiovascular complications in patients who undergo hemodialysis. However, few studies have determined a method to manage xerostomia. This study determines the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on hemodialysis patients with xerostomia and the percentage of IDWG. The study was a single-blind and quasi-experimental study. There are 75 participants: 37 in the TEAS group and 38 in the contrast group. The TEAS group used 250 µs and 50 Hz and the contrast group used 50 µs and 2 Hz three times a week for 3 weeks to stimulate ST 6 and TE17 acupoints. The salivary flow rates, dry mouth, and %IDWG were determined before, during and one week after the program. Compared with the contrast group, the TEAS group showed a significantly improved salivary flow rate (mL/min) (F (2, 123) = 15.28, p < 0.0001), and patients recovered their normal salivary flow rate. However, the results show that both groups showed significant improvement in dry mouth after treatment. The TEAS group demonstrated no effect in terms of %IDWG, as expected. The results show that a TEAS program is an effective means of symptom management for xerostomia patients who undergo hemodialysis. A TEAS program can be used to manage symptoms for xerostomia patients who undergo hemodialysis

    Relationship between Musculoskeletal Disorders and Work Performance of Nursing Staff: A Comparison of Hospital Nursing Departments

    This study aimed to explore the relationship between musculoskeletal disorders and the work performance of nursing staff. This cross-sectional study used the Checklist for Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), and the Work Ability Index to survey the prevalence of MSDs, as well as to determine the impact of MSDs on 117 nursing staff working in an emergency department, an intensive care unit, and general wards. The findings indicate that the nursing staff were exposed to a workplace environment with a high risk of MSDs. Nursing staff in the emergency department were at a particularly high risk of MSDs in their upper and lower limbs, while those working in the intensive care unit had a particularly high risk of injuries caused by manual material handling. Analyzing the relationship between MSD risk factors and NMQ scores showed a 6 times, 3.25 times, and 2.28 times increase in MSD conditions with a high workload compared to a low workload in the hand and wrist, the lower back or waist, and the knee, respectively. Medium and high workloads were found to increase the risk of MSD, which in turn affected the work ability of the nurses

    The beneficial effects of transitional care for patients with stroke: A meta-analysis

    Introduction Transitional care interventions have emerged as a promising method of ensuring treatment continuity and health care coordination when patients are discharged from hospital to home. However, few studies have investigated the frequency and duration of interventions and the effects of interventions on physical function. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the efficacy of transitional care for patients with stroke. Methods Six databases and the grey literature were searched to obtain relevant articles from October 1, 2022 to March 10, 2023. The primary outcomes studied were motor performance, walking speed, activities of daily living (ADLs) and caregiver burden following hospital-to-home transitional care. The quality of the studies was assessed with Cochrane risk of bias version 2. The quality and sensitivity of the evidence were assessed to ensure rigour of the findings. Meta-analyses were performed using stata 17.0. Results A total of 2966 patients were identified from 23 studies. Transitional care improved post-stroke motor performance, walking speed and ADLs, and reduced caregiver burden. Conclusion The findings suggest that provision of transitional care model implementation in patients with stroke is important because it reduces disability in stroke patients and helps to decrease caregivers' burden. Impact The findings of the study emphasize the importance of transitional care programmes for stroke patients after they are discharged from the hospital and returned to their homes. To meet the needs of patients, all levels of health professionals including nurses should be aware of the discharge process and care plan

    Determining the Factors That Influence Stunting during Pandemic in Rural Indonesia: A Mixed Method

    Objective: Pandemic causes an increase in the poverty rate. The consequences will be many, including the birth of stunting babies. The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on stunting. Analyzing the factors that cause stunting during a pandemic will provide suggestions for effective stunting prevention strategies at the national, regional, community, and household levels. This study aims to determine the factors that influence stunting during the pandemic. Method: We use mixed methods. The respondents of this study were 152 mothers of the Maternal and Child Nutrition Security project, and the sampling technique is Cluster Sampling. Quantitatively using a baseline survey whose analysis uses multiple logistic regression to determine the unadjusted and adjusted odds ratio. The qualitative data used focus group discussions which were analyzed using Nvivo 12 with a questionnaire, and anthropometric measurements of children from surveyed households. Results: This study summarizes the multivariate analysis of stunting determinants in the pandemic era, revealing statistically significant interactions between household sanitation facilities and household water treatment. Significant risk factors for severe stunting during the pandemic were male gender, older child age, coming from a low socioeconomic quintile, not participating in prenatal care at a health facility, and mother’s involvement in choices about what to prepare for Community House. The FGDs identified misinformation about childcare and consumption of sweetened condensed milk as significant contributors to child malnutrition. Conclusions: Lack of sanitation facilities and untreated water are contributing factors. Water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives must be included into Indonesian policies and programs to combat child stunting during a pandemic. The need for further research related to government assistance for improving toddler nutrition, as well as the relationship between WASH and linear development in early infancy should be explored
