    Oral magnesium supplementation improves endothelial function and attenuates subclinical atherosclerosis in thiazide-treated hypertensive women

    Background: Epidemiological studies demonstrate an inverse association between serum magnesium and incidence of cardiovascular disease. Diuretics commonly cause hypomagneseamia. Method: We evaluated effects of magnesium supplementation on blood pressure (BP) and vascular function in thiazide-treated hypertensive women in a randomized, double-blind, clinical trial. Hypertensive women (40–65 years) on hydrochlorothiazide and mean 24-h BP at least 130/80 mmHg were divided into placebo and supplementation (magnesium chelate 600 mg/day) groups. Patients were evaluated for nutritional and biochemical parameters, office and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, brachial flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), peripheral arterial tonometry, assessment of carotid intima–media thickness, central hemodynamic parameters and pulse wave velocity at inclusion and after 6-month follow-up. Results: The magnesium group had a significant reduction in SBP (144 ± 17 vs. 134 ± 14 mmHg, P = 0.036) and DBP (88 ± 9 vs. 81 ± 8 mmHg, P = 0.005) at 6 months, without effect on plasma glucose, lipids, or arterial stiffness parameters. The placebo group showed a significant increase in carotid intima-media thickness (0.78 ± 0.13 vs. 0.89 ± 0.14 mm, P = 0.033) without change in the magnesium group (0.79 ± 0.16 vs. 0.79 ± 0.19 mm, P = 0.716) after 6 months. The magnesium group demonstrated a significant increase in variation of FMD vs. the placebo group (+3.7 ± 2.1 vs. 2.4 ± 1.2%, P = 0.015). There was a significant correlation between the intracellular magnesium variation and FMD (r = 0.44, P = 0.011). Conclusion: Magnesium supplementation was associated with better BP control, improved endothelial function and amelioration of subclinical atherosclerosis in these thiazide-treated hypertensive women

    Fibrations of genus two on complex surfaces

    We consider fibrations of genus 2 over complex surfaces. The purpose of this paper is primarily to provide a geometric description of the possible structures of the fibration on a neighborhood of a singular fiber. In particular it is shown that the "geometric data" of the singular fiber determines the fibration on its neighborhood up to a transversely holomorphic CC^{\infty}-diffeomorphism. The method employed is quite flexible and it applies to good extent to fibrations of arbitrary genus.Comment: This is the final version, June 201

    Iwasawa N=8 Attractors

    Starting from the symplectic construction of the Lie algebra e_7(7) due to Adams, we consider an Iwasawa parametrization of the coset E_7(7)/SU(8), which is the scalar manifold of N=8, d=4 supergravity. Our approach, and the manifest off-shell symmetry of the resulting symplectic frame, is determined by a non-compact Cartan subalgebra of the maximal subgroup SL(8,R) of E_7(7). In absence of gauging, we utilize the explicit expression of the Lie algebra to study the origin of E_7(7)/SU(8) as scalar configuration of a 1/8-BPS extremal black hole attractor. In such a framework, we highlight the action of a U(1) symmetry spanning the dyonic 1/8-BPS attractors. Within a suitable supersymmetry truncation allowing for the embedding of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, this U(1) is interpreted as nothing but the global R-symmetry of pure N=2 supergravity. Moreover, we find that the above mentioned U(1) symmetry is broken down to a discrete subgroup Z_4, implying that all 1/8-BPS Iwasawa attractors are non-dyonic near the origin of the scalar manifold. We can trace this phenomenon back to the fact that the Cartan subalgebra of SL(8,R) used in our construction endows the symplectic frame with a manifest off-shell covariance which is smaller than SL(8,R) itself. Thus, the consistence of the Adams-Iwasawa symplectic basis with the action of the U(1) symmetry gives rise to the observed Z_4 residual non-dyonic symmetry.Comment: 1+26 page

    Entrepreneurs' Job Satisfaction and Its Relationship to Super-Leadership and Self-Leadership

    How is entrepreneurs' job satisfaction influenced by their use of super-leadership and self-leadership strategies? Can a mindset geared toward leading others and oneself predict entrepreneurs’ job satisfaction? This article reports research on entrepreneurs' use of super- and self- leadership strategies and their subsequent ratings of personal job satisfaction. One-hundred-and-two entrepreneurs completed a questionnaire measuring the super-leadership dimension “coaching and communicational support”, four dimensions of self-leadership (i.e., constructive thought focus, natural reward focus, physical vitality focus, behavioral focus), and job satisfaction. Structural equation analysis lends support to a model where self-leadership behavior is introduced as a variable mediating the relationship between super-leadership and job satisfaction of entrepreneurs. Implications for research and applications are discussed

    Effect Of Polymerization Cycles On Gloss, Roughness, Hardness And Impact Strength Of Acrylic Resins

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the conventional and boiled polymerization cycles on gloss, roughness, hardness and impact strength of acrylic resins. Samples were made for each Classico and QC-20 materials (n=10) in dental stone molds obtained from rectangular metallic matrices embedded in metallic flasks. The powder-liquid ratio and manipulation of the acrylic resins' were accomplished according to manufacturers' instructions and the resins were conventionally packed in metallic flasks. After polymerization by (1) conventional: 74 °C for 9 h (Classico) and (2) boiled: 20 min (QC-20) cycles, the samples were deflasked after cooling at room temperature and conventionally finished and polished. The properties were evaluated after storage in water at 37 °C for 24 h. Gloss was verified with Multi Gloss 268 meter (Konica Minolta), surface roughness was measured with Surfcorder SE 1700 rugosimeter (Kosaka), Knoop hardness number was obtained with HMV-200 microdurometer, and impact strength was measured in an Otto Wolpert-Werke device by Charpy system (40 kpcm). Data were subjected to Student's t-test (at α=0.05). The results were: Gloss: 67.7 and 62.2 for Classico and QC-20 resins, respectively; Surface roughness: 0.874 and 1.469 Ra-µm for Classico and QC-20, respectively; Knoop hardness: 27.4 and 26.9 for Classico and QC-20, respectively; and Impact strength: 37.6 and 33.6 kgf/cm2 for Classico and QC-20, respectively. No statistically significant difference (p>0.05)were found between the resins for the evaluated properties. In conclusion, conventional and boiled polymerization cycles had similar effects on gloss, roughness, hardness and impact strength of both Classico and QC-20 resins.27217618

    Design Performance Analysis of a Self-Organizing Map for Statistical Monitoring of Distribution-free Data Streams

    In industrial applications, the continuously growing development of multi-sensor approaches, together with the trend of creating data-rich environments, are straining the effectiveness of the traditional Statistical Process Control (SPC) tools. Industrial data streams frequently violate the statistical assumptions on which SPC tools are based, presenting non-normal or even mixture distributions, strong autocorrelation and complex noise patterns. To tackle these challenges, novel nonparametric approaches are required. Machine learning techniques are suitable to deal with distributional assumption violations and to cope with complex data patterns. Recent studies showed that those methods can be used in quality control problems by exploiting only in-control data for training (such a learning paradigm is also known as “one-class-classification”). In recent studies, the use of distribution-free multivariate SPC methods was proposed, based on unsupervised statistical learning tools, pointing out the difficulty of defining suitable control regions for non-normal data. In this paper, a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) based monitoring approach is presented. The SOM is an automatic data-analysis method, widely applied in recent works to clustering and data exploration problems. A very interesting feature of this method consists of its capability of providing a computationally efficient way to estimate a data-adaptive control region, even in the presence of high dimensional problems. Nevertheless, very few authors adopted the SOM in an SPC monitoring strategy. The aim of this work is to exploit the SOM network architecture, and proposing a network design approach that suites the SPC needs. A comparison study is presented, in which the process monitoring performances are compared against literature benchmark methods.     Optical Spectral Signatures of Dusty Starburst Galaxies

    We analyse the optical spectral properties of the complete sample of Very Luminous Infrared Galaxies presented by Wu et al. (1998a,b) and we find a high fraction (~50 %) of spectra showing both a strong H_delta line in absorption and relatively modest [OII] emission (e(a) spectra). The e(a) signature has been proposed as an efficient method to identify dusty starburst galaxies and we study the star formation activity and the nature of these galaxies, as well as the effects of dust on their observed properties. We examine their emission line characteristics, in particular their [OII]/H_alpha ratio, and we find this to be greatly affected by reddening. A search for AGN spectral signatures reveals that the e(a)'s are typically HII/LINER galaxies. We compare the star formation rates derived from the FIR luminosities with the estimates based on the H_alpha line and find that the values obtained from the optical emission lines are a factor of 10-70 (H_alpha) and 20-140 ([OII]) lower than the FIR estimates (50-300 M_sun yr^-1). We then study the morphological properties of the e(a) galaxies, looking for a near companion or signs of a merger/interaction. In order to explore the evolution of the e(a) population, we present an overview of the available observations of e(a)'s in different environments both at low and high redshift. Finally, we discuss the role of dust in determining the e(a) spectral properties and we propose a scenario of selective obscuration in which the extinction decreases with the stellar age.Comment: 26 pages, Latex, including 7 postscript figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Polyethylene Glycol Epirubicin-Loaded Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization Procedures Utilizing a Combined Approach with 100 and 200 μm Microspheres: A Promising Alternative to Current Standards

    PURPOSE:To report clinical effectiveness, toxicity profile, and prognostic factors of combined 100 μm ± 25 and 200 μm ± 50 epirubicin-loaded polyethylene glycol (PEG) microsphere drug-eluting embolic transcatheter arterial chemoembolization protocol in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective, single-center, single-arm study with 18 months of follow-up, 36 consecutive patients (mean age 69.9 y ± 10.8; 26 men, 10 women; 54 naïve lesions) were treated. Embolization was initiated with 100 μm ± 25 microspheres, and if stasis (10 heart beats) was not achieved, 200 μm ± 50 microspheres were administered. Each syringe (2 mL) of PEG microsphere was loaded with 50 mg of epirubicin. Results were evaluated using Modified Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors with multidetector computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging at 1, 3-6, 9-12, and 15-18 months. Toxicity profile was assessed by laboratory testing before and after the procedure. Complications were recorded. Postembolization syndrome (PES) was defined as onset of fever/nausea/pain after the procedure. Patient/lesion characteristics and treatment results were correlated with predicted outcome using regression analysis. Child-Pugh score was A in 86.1% of patients (31/36) and B in 13.9% (5/36). RESULTS: In 10 of 21 lesions, < 2 cm in diameter (47.5%) stasis was achieved with 100 μm ± 25 microspheres only, whereas all other lesions required adjunctive treatment with 200 μm ± 50 microspheres. Reported adverse events were grade 1 acute liver bile duct injury (3/39 cases, 7.7%) and PES (grade 2; 3/39 cases, 7.7%). Complete response (CR) at 1, 3-6, 9-12, and 15-18 months was 61.1%, 65.5%, 63.63%, and 62.5%. Objective response (CR + partial response) at 1, 3-6, 9-12, and 15-18 months was 83.3%, 65.85%, 63.63%, and 62.5%. No single factor (laboratory testing, etiology, patient status, hepatic status, tumor characteristics, administration protocol) predicted outcomes except for albumin level at baseline for CR (P < .05, odds ratio = 1.09). CONCLUSIONS: The combined microsphere sizing strategy was technically feasible and yielded promising results in terms of effectiveness and toxicity

    Star Formation and Selective Dust Extinction in Luminous Starburst Galaxies

    We investigate the star formation and dust extinction properties of very luminous infrared galaxies whose spectra display a strong Hdelta line in absorption and a moderate [OII] emission (e[a] spectrum). This spectral combination has been suggested to be a useful method to identify dusty starburst galaxies at any redshift on the basis of optical data alone. We compare the average e(a) optical spectrum with synthetic spectra that include both the stellar and the nebular contribution, allowing dust extinction to affect differentially the stellar populations of different ages. We find that reproducing the e(a) spectrum requires the youngest stellar generations to be significantly more extinguished by dust than older stellar populations, and implies a strong ongoing star formation activity at a level higher than in quiescent spirals. A model fitting the optical spectrum does not necessarily produce the observed FIR luminosity and this can be explained by the existence of stellar populations which are practically obscured at optical wavelengths. Models in which dust and stars are uniformly mixed yield a reddening of the emerging emission lines which is too low compared to observations: additional foreground reddening is required.Comment: 17 pages, 4 Postscript figures, ApJ in pres
