    Receptor tyrosine kinase and p16/CDKN2 expression in a case of tripe palms associated with non-small-cell lung cancer

    Background: Tripe palms is a descriptive term for a cutaneous paraneoplastic keratoderma. Tripe palms are frequently associated with gastric and pulmonary carcinoma. The pathogenetic mechanism remains unknown. Objective: To determine the influence of receptor tyrosine kinases, which are both expressed in pulmonary carcinomas and in human skin, we performed expression studies on epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), HER2, HERS in a skin sample of tripe palms obtained from a patient with non-small-cell lung cancer with lymph node involvement. Two months after diagnosis, the patient had developed palmoplantar `tripe palms'. Additionally, the expression of SRC, c-myc and p16/CDKN2 were studied. Method: Conventional reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction was performed on a tissue sample of tripe palms. Results: Weak expression of HER2 and of p16/CDKN2 was found. EGFR, HERS, c-myc and SRC were not expressed. Conclusion: Receptor tyrosine kinases of subclass I, the tyrosine kinase SRC and the oncogene c-myc play no major role in the pathogenesis of this case of tripe palms. Copyright (C) 2000 S.     Consistency and Accuracy of CelebA Attribute Values

    We report the first systematic analysis of the experimental foundations of facial attribute classification.Two annotators independently assigning attribute values shows that only 12 of 40 common attributes are assigned values with >= 95% consistency, and three (high cheekbones, pointed nose, oval face) have essentially random consistency. Of 5,068 duplicate face appearances in CelebA, attributes have contradicting values on from 10 to 860 of the 5,068 duplicates. Manual audit of a subset of CelebA estimates error rates as high as 40% for (no beard=false), even though the labeling consistency experiment indicates that no beard could be assigned with >= 95% consistency. Selecting the mouth slightly open (MSO) for deeper analysis, we estimate the error rate for (MSO=true) at about 20% and (MSO=false) at about 2%. A corrected version of the MSO attribute values enables learning a model that achieves higher accuracy than previously reported for MSO.     On the Precipitation-Strengthening Contribution of the Ta-Containing Co3(Al,W)-Phase to the Creep Properties of γ/γ′ Cobalt-Base Superalloys

    Abstract The creep strength of single-crystalline Co-based superalloys was found to be comparable to first-generation Ni-base superalloys. However, considerable shearing of the γ′ precipitates was observed in the early creep stages. To determine the strengthening contribution of the Ta-containing γ′-Co3(Al,W) precipitates, the creep strength of several single-crystalline Co-Al-W-Ta superalloys was determined as a function of the γ′ volume fraction at 1223 K (950 °C) and stress levels between 25 and 600 MPa. Employing a Lagneborg–Bergman–Reppich (LBR) approach, it is found that the strengthening contribution of the γ′ precipitates increases significantly with increasing γ′ volume fraction. In a Co-base superalloy that exhibits a precipitate volume fraction of about 70 pct, the γ′-strengthening contribution calculated with the LBR approach ranges between the ones observed in first-generation Ni-base superalloy CMSX-6 and second-generation Ni-base superalloy CMSX-4

    Design of a Co–Al–W–Ta Alloy Series with Varying γ′ Volume Fraction and Their Thermophysical Properties

    The γ′ volume fraction is a key parameter in precipitation-strengthened Co- and Ni-base superalloys and mainly determines the alloys’ properties. However, systematic studies with varying γ′ volume fractions are rare and the influence on thermal expansion has not been studied in detail. Therefore, a series of six Ta-containing Co-based alloys was designed with compositions on a γ–γ′ tie-line, where the γ′ volume fraction changes systematically. During solidification, Laves (C14-type) and µ (D85-type) phases formed in alloys with high levels of W and Ta. Single-phase γ or two-phase γ/γ′ microstructures were obtained in four experimental alloys after heat treatment as designed, whereas secondary precipitates, such as χ (D019-type), Laves, and μ, existed in alloys containing high levels of γ′-forming elements. However, long-term heat treatments for 1000 hours revealed the formation of the χ phase also in the former χ-free alloys. The investigation of the thermal expansion behavior revealed a significant anomaly related to the dissolution of γ′, which can be used to determine the γ′ solvus temperature with high accuracy. Compared to thermodynamic calculations, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal expansion analysis revealed a larger increase of the γ′ solvus temperatures and a lesser decline of the solidus temperatures when the alloy composition approached the composition of the pure γ′ phase

    Physical Activity and Trajectory of Cognitive Change in Older Persons: Mayo Clinic Study of Aging

    Background: Little is known about the association between physical activity (PA) and cognitive trajectories in older adults. Objective: To examine the association between PA and change in memory, language, attention, visuospatial skills, and global cognition, and a potential impact of sex or Apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon 4 status. Methods: Longitudinal study derived from the population-based Mayo Clinic Study of Aging, including 2,060 cognitively unimpaired males and females aged >= 70 years. Engagement in midlife (ages 50-65) and late-life (last year) PA was assessed using a questionnaire. Neuropsychological testing was done every 15 months (mean follow-up 5.8 years). We ran linear mixed-effect models to examine whether mid- or late-life PA at three intensities (mild, moderate, vigorous) was associated with cognitive z-scores. Results: Light intensity midlife PA was associated with less decline in memory function compared to the no-PA reference group (time x light PA; estimate [standard error] 0.047 [0.016], p = 0.004). Vigorous late-life PA was associated with less decline in language (0.033 [0.015], p = 0.030), attention (0.032 [0.017], p = 0.050), and global cognition (0.039 [0.016], p = 0.012). Females who were physically inactive in midlife experienced more pronounced cognitive decline than females physically active in midlife and males regardless of PA (p-values for time interaction terms with midlife PA levels and sex were all p < 0.05 for global cognition). APOE epsilon 4 carriership did not moderate the association between PA and cognition. Conclusion: Engaging in PA, particularly of vigorous intensity in late-life, was associated with less pronounced decline in global and domain-specific cognition. This association may differ by sex

    The relationship between chiropractor required and current level of business knowledge

    Background: Chiropractors frequently practice within health care systems requiring the business acumen of an entrepreneur. However, some chiropractors do not know the relationship between the level of business knowledge required for practice success and their current level of business knowledge. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between chiropractors’ perceived level of business knowledge required and their perceived level of current business knowledge. Methods: Two hundred and seventy-four participants completed an online survey (Health Care Training and Education Needs Survey) which included eight key business items. Participants rated the level of perceived business knowledge required (Part I) and their current perceived level of knowledge (Part II) for the same eight items. Data was collected from November 27, 2013 to December 18, 2013. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s ranked correlation to determine the statistically significant relationships for the perceived level of knowledge required and the perceived current level of knowledge for each of the paired eight items from Parts I and II of the survey. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Tests were performed to determine the statistical difference between the paired items. Results: The results of Spearman’s correlation testing indicated a statistically significant (p < 0.01) positive correlation for the perceived level of knowledge required and perceived current level of knowledge for six variables: (a) organizational behavior, (b) strategic management, (c) marketing, (d) legal and ethical, (e) managerial decisions, and (f) operations. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks testing indicated a significant difference for three paired items: strategic management; marketing and; legal and ethical. The results suggest that relationships exist for the majority of business items (6 of 8) however a statistically difference was demonstrated in only three of the paired business items. Conclusion: The implications of this study for social change include the potential to improve chiropractors’ business knowledge and skills, enable practice success, enhance health services delivery and positively influence the profession as a viable career.https://doi.org/10.1186/s12998-017-0134-
