    Investigations of solutions of Einstein's field equations close to lambda-Taub-NUT

    We present investigations of a class of solutions of Einstein's field equations close to the family of lambda-Taub-NUT spacetimes. The studies are done using a numerical code introduced by the author elsewhere. One of the main technical complication is due to the S3-topology of the Cauchy surfaces. Complementing these numerical results with heuristic arguments, we are able to yield some first insights into the strong cosmic censorship issue and the conjectures by Belinskii, Khalatnikov, and Lifschitz in this class of spacetimes. In particular, the current investigations suggest that strong cosmic censorship holds in this class.     Performing a Motor Action Enhances Social Reward Processing and Modulates the Neural Processing of Predictive Cues.

    Associative learning affects many areas of human behavior. Recently, we showed that the neural response to monetary reward is enhanced by performing an action, suggesting interactions between neural systems controlling motor behavior and reward processing. Given many psychiatric disorders are associated with social anhedonia, a key open question is whether such effects generalize to social rewards, and in how far they affect associative learning. We developed a novel task in which participants (n = 66) received social reward feedback and social punishment either by pressing a button or waiting. Predictive cues were linked to feedback valence with 80% accuracy. Using EEG, we measured the neural response to both predictive cues and social feedback. We found enhanced reward positivity for social reward preceded by an action, and an enhanced N2 for cues predicting negative feedback. Cue-locked P3 amplitude was reduced for cues associated with negative feedback in passive trials only, showing a modulation of outcome anticipation by performing a motor action. This was supported by connectivity analyses showing stronger directed theta synchronization, in line with increased top-down modulation of attention, in active compared with passive trials. These findings suggest that actively obtaining social feedback enhances reward sensitivity and modulates outcome anticipation

    Macroscopic evidence for quantum criticality and field-induced quantum fluctuations in cuprate superconductors

    We present macroscopic experimental evidence for field-induced microscopic quantum fluctuations in different hole- and electron-type cuprate superconductors with varying doping levels and numbers of CuO2_2 layers per unit cell. The significant suppression of the zero-temperature in-plane magnetic irreversibility field relative to the paramagnetic field in all cuprate superconductors suggests strong quantum fluctuations due to the proximity of the cuprates to quantum criticality.Comment: 3 figures.     On de Sitter-like and Minkowski-like space-times

    Friedrich's proofs for the global existence results of de Sitter-like space-times and of semi-global existence of Minkowski-like space-times [Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{107}, 587 (1986)] are re-examined and discussed, making use of the extended conformal field equations and a gauge based on conformal geodesics. In this gauge the location of the conformal boundary of the space-times is known \emph{a priori} once the initial data has been prescribed.     Scaling Bounded Model Checking By Transforming Programs With Arrays

    Bounded Model Checking is one the most successful techniques for finding bugs in program. However, model checkers are resource hungry and are often unable to verify programs with loops iterating over large arrays.We present a transformation that enables bounded model checkers to verify a certain class of array properties. Our technique transforms an array-manipulating (ANSI-C) program to an array-free and loop-free (ANSI-C) program thereby reducing the resource requirements of a model checker significantly. Model checking of the transformed program using an off-the-shelf bounded model checker simulates the loop iterations efficiently. Thus, our transformed program is a sound abstraction of the original program and is also precise in a large number of cases - we formally characterize the class of programs for which it is guaranteed to be precise. We demonstrate the applicability and usefulness of our technique on both industry code as well as academic benchmarks

    Low Energy Electron Point Projection Microscopy of Suspended Graphene, the Ultimate "Microscope Slide"

    Point Projection Microscopy (PPM) is used to image suspended graphene using low-energy electrons (100-200eV). Because of the low energies used, the graphene is neither damaged or contaminated by the electron beam. The transparency of graphene is measured to be 74%, equivalent to electron transmission through a sheet as thick as twice the covalent radius of sp^2-bonded carbon. Also observed is rippling in the structure of the suspended graphene, with a wavelength of approximately 26 nm. The interference of the electron beam due to the diffraction off the edge of a graphene knife edge is observed and used to calculate a virtual source size of 4.7 +/- 0.6 Angstroms for the electron emitter. It is demonstrated that graphene can be used as both anode and substrate in PPM in order to avoid distortions due to strong field gradients around nano-scale objects. Graphene can be used to image objects suspended on the sheet using PPM, and in the future, electron holography

    Personalised digital interventions for reducing hazardous and harmful alcohol consumption in community-dwelling populations

    This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows: The main objective is to assess the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of digital interventions for reducing hazardous and harmful alcohol consumption and/or alcohol-related problems in community-dwelling populations. We envisage two comparator groups: (1) no intervention (or minimal input) controls; and (2) another active intervention for delivering preventive advice or counselling to reduce hazardous or harmful alcohol consumption. Specifically, we will address two questions: (1) Are digital interventions superior to no intervention (or minimal input) controls? This question is important for individuals accessing interventions through their own motivation or interest. These individuals will be unlikely to experience active practitioner input and it is important to understand whether digital interventions are better than general material they might seek out on the internet or via mobile phone-based apps etc. (2) Are digital interventions at least equally effective as face-to-face brief alcohol interventions? Practitioner delivered brief interventions are generally accepted to be the best alternative in secondary preventive care in health, workplace, educational or community settings. However, time constraints can impede face-to-face delivery of such interventions and it is important to know whether digitally provided input can yield comparable effects to interventions delivered by trained practitioners. We will also identify the most effective component behaviour change techniques of such interventions and their mechanisms of action. Secondary objectives are as follows: 1.To assess whether outcomes differ between trials where the digital intervention targets participants attending health, social care, education or other community-based settings and those where it is offered remotely via the internet or mobile phone platforms; 2.To develop a taxonomy of interventions according to their mode of delivery (e.g. functionality features) and assess their impact on outcomes; 3.To identify theories or models that have been used in the development and/or evaluation of the intervention – this will inform intervention development work

    Examining the effectiveness of place-based interventions to improve public health and reduce health inequalities: an umbrella review.

    BackgroundLocally delivered, place-based public health interventions are receiving increasing attention as a way of improving health and reducing inequalities. However, there is limited evidence on their effectiveness. This umbrella review synthesises systematic review evidence of the health and health inequalities impacts of locally delivered place-based interventions across three elements of place and health: the physical, social, and economic environments.MethodsSystematic review methodology was used to identify recent published systematic reviews of the effectiveness of place-based interventions on health and health inequalities (PROGRESS+) in high-income countries. Nine databases were searched from 1st January 2008 to 1st March 2020. The quality of the included articles was determined using the Revised Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews tool (R-AMSTAR).ResultsThirteen systematic reviews were identified - reporting 51 unique primary studies. Fifty of these studies reported on interventions that changed the physical environment and one reported on changes to the economic environment. Only one primary study reported cost-effectiveness data. No reviews were identified that assessed the impact of social interventions. Given heterogeneity and quality issues, we found tentative evidence that the provision of housing/home modifications, improving the public realm, parks and playgrounds, supermarkets, transport, cycle lanes, walking routes, and outdoor gyms - can all have positive impacts on health outcomes - particularly physical activity. However, as no studies reported an assessment of variation in PROGRESS+ factors, the effect of these interventions on health inequalities remains unclear.ConclusionsPlace-based interventions can be effective at improving physical health, health behaviours and social determinants of health outcomes. High agentic interventions indicate greater improvements for those living in greater proximity to the intervention, which may suggest that in order for interventions to reduce inequalities, they should be implemented at a scale commensurate with the level of disadvantage. Future research needs to ensure equity data is collected, as this is severely lacking and impeding progress on identifying interventions that are effective in reducing health inequalities.Trial registrationPROSPERO CRD42019158309

    Green coloring of GaN single crystals introduced by Cr impurity

    In this study unintentionally doped GaN grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy that exhibits a sharply delimited region of green color was investigated. Optical analysis was performed by absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. An absorption band between 1.5 and 2.0 eV was found to be responsible for the green color and was related to a sharp emission at 1.193 eV by luminescence and excitation spectroscopy. The appearance of both optical signatures in the region of green color was related to an increase of Cr contamination detected by secondary ion mass spectrometry. We propose that the origin of green color as well as the emission line at 1.193 eV is attributed to internal transitions of Cr⁴⁺
