Likelihood Non-Gaussianity in Large-Scale Structure Analyses
Standard present day large-scale structure (LSS) analyses make a major
assumption in their Bayesian parameter inference --- that the likelihood has a
Gaussian form. For summary statistics currently used in LSS, this assumption,
even if the underlying density field is Gaussian, cannot be correct in detail.
We investigate the impact of this assumption on two recent LSS analyses: the
Beutler et al. (2017) power spectrum multipole () analysis and the
Sinha et al. (2017) group multiplicity function () analysis. Using
non-parametric divergence estimators on mock catalogs originally constructed
for covariance matrix estimation, we identify significant non-Gaussianity in
both the and likelihoods. We then use Gaussian mixture density
estimation and Independent Component Analysis on the same mocks to construct
likelihood estimates that approximate the true likelihood better than the
Gaussian -likelihood. Using these likelihood estimates, we accurately
estimate the true posterior probability distribution of the Beutler et al.
(2017) and Sinha et al. (2017) parameters. Likelihood non-Gaussianity shifts
the constraint by , but otherwise, does not
significantly impact the overall parameter constraints of Beutler et al.
(2017). For the analysis, using the pseudo-likelihood significantly
underestimates the uncertainties and biases the constraints of Sinha et al.
(2017) halo occupation parameters. For and , the posteriors
are shifted by and and broadened by and
, respectively. The divergence and likelihood estimation methods we
present provide a straightforward framework for quantifying the impact of
likelihood non-Gaussianity and deriving more accurate parameter constraints.Comment: 33 pages, 7 figure
Fano Lineshapes Revisited: Symmetric Photoionization Peaks from Pure Continuum Excitation
In a photoionization spectrum in which there is no excitation of the discrete
states, but only the underlying continuum, we have observed resonances which
appear as symmetric peaks, not the commonly expected window resonances.
Furthermore, since the excitation to the unperturbed continuum vanishes, the
cross section expected from Fano's configuration interaction theory is
identically zero. This shortcoming is removed by the explicit introduction of
the phase shifted continuum, which demonstrates that the shape of a resonance,
by itself, provides no information about the relative excitation amplitudes to
the discrete state and the continuum.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Clinical efficacy, radiographic and safety findings through 2 years of golimumab treatment in patients with active psoriatic arthritis: results from a long-term extension of the randomised, placebo-controlled GO-REVEAL study
Objectives: To assess long-term golimumab efficacy/safety in patients with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA).<p></p>
Methods Adult PsA patients (≥3 swollen, ≥3 tender joints, active psoriasis) were randomly assigned to subcutaneous injections of placebo, golimumab 50â
mg or 100â
mg every 4â
weeks (q4wks) through week 20. All patients received golimumab 50 or 100â
mg beginning week 24. Findings through 2â
years are reported. Efficacy evaluations included ≥20% improvement in American College of Rheumatology (ACR20) response, good/moderate response in Disease Activity Scores incorporating 28 joints and C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP), ≥75% improvement in Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI75) and changes in PsA-modified Sharp/van der Heijde scores (SHS).<p></p>
Results: Golimumab treatment through 2â
years was effective in maintaining clinical response (response rates: ACR20 63%â70%, DAS28-CRP 77%â86%, PASI75 56%â72%) and inhibiting radiographic progression (mean change in PsA-modified SHS in golimumab-treated patients: â0.36), with no clear difference between doses. No new safety signals were identified through 2â
years. With the study's tuberculosis screening and prophylactic measures, no patient developed active tuberculosis through 2â
years.<p></p>
Conclusions: Golimumab 50 and 100â
mg for up to 2â
years yielded sustained clinical and radiographic efficacy when administered to patients with active PsA. Increasing the golimumab dose from 50 to 100â
mg q4wks added limited benefit. Golimumab safety through up to 2â
years was consistent with other antitumour necrosis factor α agents used to treat PsA. Treatment of patients with latent tuberculosis identified at baseline appeared to be effective in inhibiting the development of active tuberculosis.<p></p>
Evaluation of HCMM data for assessing soil moisture and water table depth
Soil moisture in the 0-cm to 4-cm layer could be estimated with 1-mm soil temperatures throughout the growing season of a rainfed barley crop in eastern South Dakota. Empirical equations were developed to reduce the effect of canopy cover when radiometrically estimating the soil temperature. Corrective equations were applied to an aircraft simulation of HCMM data for a diversity of crop types and land cover conditions to estimate the soil moisture. The average difference between observed and measured soil moisture was 1.6% of field capacity. Shallow alluvial aquifers were located with HCMM predawn data. After correcting the data for vegetation differences, equations were developed for predicting water table depths within the aquifer. A finite difference code simulating soil moisture and soil temperature shows that soils with different moisture profiles differed in soil temperatures in a well defined functional manner. A significant surface thermal anomaly was found to be associated with shallow water tables

Data were analyzed for variations in eastern South Dakota. Soil moisture in the 0-4 cm layer could be estimated with 1-mm soil temperatures throughout the growing season of a rainfed barley crop (% cover ranging from 30% to 90%) with an r squared = 0.81. Empirical equations were developed to reduce the effect of canopy cover when radiometrically estimating the 1-mm soil temperature, r squared = 0.88. The corrective equations were applied to an aircraft simulation of HCMM data for a diversity of crop types and land cover conditions to estimate the 0-4 cm soil moisture. The average difference between observed and measured soil moisture was 1.6% of field capacity. HCMM data were used to estimate the soil moisture for four dates with an r squared = 0.55 after correction for crop conditions. Location of shallow alluvial aquifers could be accomplished with HCMM predawn data. After correction of HCMM day data for vegetation differences, equations were developed for predicting water table depths within the aquifer (r=0.8)
Artifacts with uneven sampling of red noise
The vast majority of sampling systems operate in a standard way: at each tick
of a fixed-frequency master clock a digitizer reads out a voltage that
corresponds to the value of some physical quantity and translates it into a bit
pattern that is either transmitted, stored, or processed right away. Thus
signal sampling at evenly spaced time intervals is the rule: however this is
not always the case, and uneven sampling is sometimes unavoidable.
While periodic or quasi-periodic uneven sampling of a deterministic signal
can reasonably be expected to produce artifacts, it is much less obvious that
the same happens with noise: here I show that this is indeed the case only for
long-memory noise processes, i.e., power-law noises with . The resulting artifacts are usually a nuisance although they can be
eliminated with a proper processing of the signal samples, but they could also
be turned to advantage and used to encode information.Comment: 5 figure

Cow/calf producers operating in the Dakotas were surveyed on their price discovery strategies, marketing channel preferences, and their perceptions of how regime change in the public price reporting system for fed cattle affected the beef industry in general and the cow/calf industry in particular. Survey results indicate cow/calf producers consider local institutions (auction barns, etc.) to be more reliable for price discovery than regional or national institutions (futures market, USDA public price reports, satellite auctions, etc.). The auction barn marketing channel is the preferred channel for marketing cattle and is considered the most reliable source of market information by producers. Tunable Fano Resonances in Transport through Microwave Billiards
We present a tunable microwave scattering device that allows the controlled
variation of Fano line shape parameters in transmission through quantum
billiards. Transport in this device is nearly fully coherent. By comparison
with quantum calculations, employing the modular recursive Green's-function
method, the scattering wave function and the degree of residual decoherence can
be determined. The parametric variation of Fano line shapes in terms of
