Probing the origins of vibrational mode specificity in intramolecular dynamics through picosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging studies

We have studied the intramolecular dynamics induced by selective photoexcitation of two near-isoenergetic vibrational states in S1 p-fluorotoluene using picosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging. We find that similar dynamics ensue following the preparation of the 13111 and 7a111 states that lie at 1990 cm-1 and 2026 cm-1, and that these dynamics are mediated by a single strongly coupled doorway state in each case. However, the lifetimes differ by a factor of three, suggesting an influence of the vibrational character of the modes involved. Our results clearly show the contribution of torsion-vibration coupling to the dynamics; this is further corroborated by comparison with the 7a111 state in S1 p-difluorobenzene, which lies at 2068 cm-1. We invoke a model in which van der Waals interactions between methyl hydrogen atoms and nearby ring carbon and hydrogen atoms leads to mixing of the vibrational and torsional states. This model predicts that enhanced torsion-vibration coupling occurs when mode 7a is excited, consistent with our observations

On the Flow of Energy in K-space Driven by Coriolis Induced Intramolecular Vibrational Energy Redistribution (IVR)

Author Institution: Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois 60439.The spectrum of the asymmetric methyl stretching vibration of ethanol exhibits extensive local perturbations characteristic of vibrational state mixing induced by both anharmonic and Coriolis terms in the Hamiltonian. An initially prepared rotational state, JKJ_{K}, of this (bright) zero-order vibration would temporally evolve such that at later times the wave packet would contain contributions from zero-order bath states with different values of the K. A random matrix methodology has recently been used by Perry et al. to model the statistical properties of the spectrum and to give insight into the average strength of both bright-bath and bath-bath couplings, The model treats the vibrational part of the matrix elements stochastically and the rotational part deterministically using the known rotational quantum number dependence of the Coriolis interaction. Here this model is used to study the flow of energy in K-space by projecting the temporally evolving wave packet onto the zero-order K states of the bath as a function of time. Preliminary results indicate that although an initially prepared bright state decays in about 50 ps, it takes many times longer for the energy to completely percolate through K-space; and even in the long time limit the K quantum number appears to be partially conserved

Author Institution: "Gas Phase Dynamics Group, Chemistry Division Argonne National Laboratory", Argonne, Illinois 60439.A direct measurement of the transition dipole moment, μ3\mu_{3}, of the ν3\nu_{3} asymmetric C-H stretching vibration of the methyl radical has been made in a transverse-flow reactor using laser-photolysis transient infrared absorption spectroscopy. Cyano (CN) radicals (and Cl atoms) were produced by excimer laser photolysis of ClCN at 193 nm and reacted with methane to give both CH3CH_{3} and HCN (and HCl). The intensities of 18 rotational lines of the ν3\nu_{3} fundamental band were measured relative to the R(8) line of the ν3\nu_{3} C-H stretching vibration of HCN. The transition dipole moment of the methyl radical was determined to be μ3=0.0327±0.0027\mu_{3} = 0.0327\pm 0.0027 D using the known absolute absorption cross section of the ν3\nu_{3} vibration of HCN
