Motivation, stress, anxiety and self-concept are affective variables which relate to drama performance. An empirical investigation was conducted with the aim to determine the underlying relationship between the different affective variables, to establish the relationship between these variables and achievement in drama and to determine the developmental pattern of the affective factors from Grade 8 to 12. Hundred and one drama learners from Grade 8 to 12 were used in the sample. The results showed that motivation correlates positively with self-concept and self-concept and motivation correlate negatively with anxiety and stress. Stress and anxiety showed a positive correlation which indicates that high stress relates to high anxiety. Significant but low positive correlations were found between motivation, self-concept and drama achievement. No significant  relationship could be found between drama achievement and stress or anxiety. Similarly, no significant differences could be identified betweenthe affective factors in the different grades. Keywords: Motivation; stress; anxiety; self-concept; affective variables; drama achievementSleutelwoorde: Motivering; stres; angs; selfkonsep; affektiewe veranderlikes;dramaprestasi

Personality development of the adolescent: Peer group versus parents

    Get PDF
The aim was firstly to determine if peers and parents had a different impact on the personality development of the adolescent. A second aim was to determine if gender played a role in this regard. An empirical investigation was carried out involving 98 learners from Grades 8 to 11 (53 boys and 55 girls). The respondents complete d instrume nts measuring parent-c hild relationship, rel ationship with peers, se lf-concept, and personality characteristics. The results indicated that the peer group, when compared with parents, had a stronger rel ationship with the personality development of the adolescent. T his stronger rel ationship was more prominent in boys than in girls. Gender did, therefore, play a role

    Atomic Effective Pseudopotentials for Semiconductors

We derive an analytic connection between the screened self-consistent effective potential from density functional theory (DFT) and atomic effective pseudopotentials (AEPs). The motivation to derive AEPs is to address structures with thousands to hundred thousand atoms, as given in most nanostructures. The use of AEPs allows to bypass a self-consistent procedure and to address eigenstates around a certain region of the spectrum (e.g., around the band gap). The bulk AEP construction requires two simple DFT calculations of slightly deformed elongated cells. The ensuing AEPs are given on a fine reciprocal space grid, including the small reciprocal vector components, are free of parameters, and involve no fitting procedure. We further show how to connect the AEPs of different bulk materials, which is necessary to obtain accurate band offsets. We derive a total of 20 AEPs for III-V, II-VI and group IV semiconductors and demonstrate their accuracy and transferability by comparison to DFT calculations of strained bulk structures, quantum wells with varying thickness, and semiconductor alloys.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR

Endogenous factors that relate to the eating habits of adolescents

    Get PDF
The aim in this research was to determine how endogenous factors such as gender, intelligence, self-concept, and personality relate to the eating habits of adolescents. An empirical investigation was conducted using 340 secondary school learners, 162 boys and 178 girls. From the results it appeared that girls tend to have more unhealthy eating habits than boys and adolescents with high intelligence are at risk of developing unhealthy eating behaviour. A strong relationship existed between the physical self and eating habits. The most important personality factors associated with eating habits were social boldness and individualism. Importance of second-order piezoelectric effects in zincblende semiconductors

We show that the piezoelectric effect that describes the emergence of an electric field in response to a crystal deformation in III-V semiconductors such as GaAs and InAs has strong contributions from second-order effects that have been neglected so far. We calculate the second-order piezoelectric tensors using density functional theory and obtain the piezoelectric field for [111]-oriented Inx_xGa1−x_{1-x}As quantum wells of realistic dimensions and concentration xx. We find that the linear and the quadratic piezoelectric coefficients have the opposite effect on the field, and for large strains the quadratic terms even dominate. Thus, the piezoelectric field turns out to be a rare example of a physical quantity for which the first- and second-order contributions are of comparable magnitude.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to Phys. Social isolation: a learning obstacle in the primary school

    Get PDF
The teaching methodology of Outcomes-based Education is mainly based on group work. For this reason it would be extremely difficult for social isolates to benefit from Outcomes-based Education because of their inability to form relationships or work together with others in groups. In the light of this obstacle the aim of the research was to determine the relationship between social isolation and academic achievement at primary school level and to determine which factors relate to social isolation in general. A sample of 180 primary school learners from three primary schools was used in the investigation. Academic achievement, loneliness, self-esteem, psychological wellbeing, perceived physical ability and physical attractiveness were measured. As much as 29%of the variance in academic achievement can be explained by social isolation making it an important variable when academic achievement is predicted at primary school level. Negative correlations were found between social isolation and all the other variables, especially self-esteem (r = -0.81; p < 0.01). The implications of the findings for possible intervention are discussed. (South African Journal of Education: 2001 21(4): 330-335

Influence of the charge carrier tunneling processes on the recombination dynamics in single lateral quantum dot molecules

We report on the charge carrier dynamics in single lateral quantum dot molecules and the effect of an applied electric field on the molecular states. Controllable electron tunneling manifests itself in a deviation from the typical excitonic decay behavior which is strongly influenced by the tuning electric field and inter-molecular Coulomb energies. A rate equation model is developed to gain more insight into the charge transfer and tunneling mechanisms. Non-resonant (phonon-mediated) electron tunneling which changes the molecular exciton character from direct to indirect, and vice versa, is found to be the dominant tunable decay mechanism of excitons besides radiative recombination.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

POPULATION NUMBERS OF FUR SEALS AT PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, SOUTHERN OCEAN

    Get PDF
During the period 17–22 December 2001, the onshore distribution and the abundance of Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella and Subantarctic fur seals A. tropicalis were determined for Prince Edward Island. Two breeding colonies of Antarctic fur seals were located on the south-east coast of the island; the first a mixed (with Subantarctic fur seals) breeding colony with an estimated 24 pups on a vegetated promontory on the northern section of Boggel Beach, and the second, a presumably pure Antarctic fur seal breeding colony with an estimated 380 pups, at Penguin Beach. At a mean intrinsic rate of natural increase of 16.2&#37 per year, Antarctic fur seals appear to be in the rapid recolonization phase of population growth. Breeding colonies of Subantarctic fur seals, largely found on the entire east coast, produced an estimated 15 000 pups, and the population had maintained a mean intrinsic rate of natural increase of some 9.5&#37 per year since 1987/88.Afr.
