Model evaluation for glycolytic oscillations in yeast biotransformations of xenobiotics

Anaerobic glycolysis in yeast perturbed by the reduction of xenobiotic ketones is studied numerically in two models which possess the same topology but different levels of complexity. By comparing both models' predictions for concentrations and fluxes as well as steady or oscillatory temporal behavior we answer the question what phenomena require what kind of minimum model abstraction. While mean concentrations and fluxes are predicted in agreement by both models we observe different domains of oscillatory behavior in parameter space. Public Dialogical Selves: Excentric Beings in Language

Dialogical Self Theory brings together traditions about the self and about dialogue within an inspiring framework that highlights processes and insists on human beings' relatedness to Others. From this general dynamization of the self several challenging topics result, such as stability within dynamics, the self's uniqueness within polyphonic collectivities, and its plurality and recognizability within developmental movements. Recently, one can observe the formulation of a desideratum that could precisely resolve some of these challenges. Several scholars are looking for a kind of thirdness that reaches beyond the inter-subjects and introduces a mid-level located before the social. Interestingly, this is linked to issues of form, more easy to acknowledge e.g. on an institutional level. This discussion is important for it promises a dialogical articulation of polyphonic sociality with dialogic individuality, of stability and dynamics, of recognizability within change. I view this articulation realized through an aspect that gives the self performances the quality of the social by simultaneously keeping their subjective quality, thus differentiating the self's dialogicality: form – “wandering” language forms. I will address language as the third aspect, the formative medium of the dialogical selves per-formations, leading to a decidedly public notion of the DS, which includes Plessner's notion of “excentric positionality”

Jenseits der Sprecherhoheit: Sprachliche Tätigkeit zwischen Entführung und Regulierung

Die Antrittsvorlesung führt in die kulturhistorische und dialogisch orientierte Konzeption von Psycholinguistik ein (Bertau, 2009). Wesentlich ist dieser Konzeption die Abkehr von der ausschließlichen Betrachtung der Sprache im Kopf des Sprachbenutzers -- dem so genannten Ich-Ort -- und der Hinwendung zu den Vorgängen zwischen sprechenden und erwidernden, wechselseitig ausgerichteten Individuen. Das Zwischen und die nicht reduzierbare Zweiheit bilden den konzeptionellen Ausgangspunkt zur Modellierung des sprachlichen Geschehens und zur theoretischen Fassung des Phänomens Sprache. Nach einer Einführung in die Architektur der Sprechdenktheorie wird über den zugrunde gelegten Sprach- und den Tätigkeitsbegriff das Konzept der Polis entwickelt. Dieses als Drittes, zu Sprecher und Zuhörer hinzukommende Moment ist Bedingung jeden sprachlichen Geschehens und in spezifischer Weise jeweils präsent, daher auch adressiert. Im aktuell erzeugten Sprachraum versetzen die Partner einander mit verschiedenen Mitteln, sprachliche Steuerung erweist sich als ein Oszillieren zwischen Entführen und Regulieren

Exploring language as the “in-between”

Assuming a performative notion of language, this contribution addresses how language functions as a symbolic means and asks for its function for the dialogical self. In accordance with a non-individualistic notion, individuals are related to each other within and by virtue of an in-between. This in-between is called “spacetime of language”: a dynamic evolving across time, perceived as linguistic forms with their chronotopology and the positionings of the performers (self as-whom to other as-whom). With respect to the linguistic forms, the specificity of language functioning is described by Bühler’s term of displacement. The effect of displacement is to generate sharedness by inducing a movement the partners follow, going beyond their actual, sensitive contact. Symbolic displacement, expanding Bühler’s notion, is particularly interesting with regard to the dialogical self: it permits the social construction of several perspectives on self, other, and reality—positions and voices informing the self’s performances
