    Applying Early Existential Critiques to Contemporary Themes in American Culture

    Charles Taylor, Carl Elliot, Alexis De Tocqueville, and Lionel Trilling have presented and critically analyzed a number of ideals that animate currents in contemporary American Culture, which include authenticity, sincerity, pluralism, subjectivism, and self-actualization, but these ideals do not harmoniously coexist; rather, they inevitably conflict. These notions have been realized in a way that is unique in their current understandings. Though there is the appearance of some homogeneity amongst these themes, they inevitably clash and contain internal tensions. The philosophers Kierkegaard and Nietzsche respond to many of the ideas that underlie these modern notions. Though differing in degrees, these critiques anticipate many of the problems that have arisen within discussion of contemporary culture. The themes that Taylor, Elliot, De Tocqueville, and Trilling outline are not limited to those notions that Kierkegaard and Nietzsche criticized. Rather, some cultural attitudes find their lineage in their respective philosophies. Both the historical tradition behind, and the contemporary definitions of these themes, need to be understood in order to explain the fragmented nature of contemporary culture. Kierkegaard and Nietzsche offer a historical perspective to the definitions given by Taylor, Elliot, and Trilling. Understanding the multifarious and contradictory foundations of contemporary culture is essential to demonstrating the potential paradox of realizing a consistent language of contemporary culture, and may include the inability to uphold these themes

    Investigation and long-term monitoring of Phragmites australis within Virginia\u27s constructed wetland sites : final report

    The use of constructed wetlands to replace natural wetlands is becoming pandemic. An investigation using Global Positioning System technology to map the vegetated communities of fifteen of the largest constructed wetlands in Virginia reveals that 80% are colonized by the invasive species, Phragmites australis Trin., and/or aggressive species, Typha spp. Tidally influenced wetlands that have subtidal perimeter ditches have significantly less (p\u3c0.05) P. australis in the wetland interior than those without perimeter ditches. Fractured regression analyses show that 6-years after constructionP. australis invasion can be extensive. Linear regression analysis suggests that, if conditions remain favorable for P. australis colonization, constructed wetlands could be overrun in 40 years

    Heavy Mineral Variability And Provenance Of The Virginia Inner Shelf And Lower Chesapeake Bay

    The mineral composition of the 3- to 4-phi (0.125 to 0.063 mm) size fraction of 49 surficial grab samples,located north and south of the entrance to Chesapeake Bay and of 38 surficial samples, located in the bay mouth, was determined during this study. Although up to 17 minerals were identified, principal components analysis indicated that seven minerals accounted for 96 percent of the composition variance in the bay samples. By using Q-mode factor analysis, three mineral composition end-members (factors) were selected from the sample data and provided an adequate description of the spatial variation in heavy-mineral composition.     Heavy Mineral Concentrations In Sediments Of The Virginia Inner Continental Shelf

    The Virginia Division of Mineral Resources and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science investigated the occurrence of heavy minerals in the offshore sediments of Virginia. We began the project because earlier reconnaissance studies reported high heavy-mineral concentrations from several samples collected off the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Our work confirms the previously reported mineral values and locates additional high concentrations up to 20 nautical miles offshore. Furthermore, we show that potentially economic mineral values are not restricted no surficial sediments, but also are found in the upper 15 to 20 feet of inner continental shelf sediments. Several core samples indicate that potential economic values of heavy minerals are clustered offshore of Hog Island, Smith Island, Virginia Beach, and False Cape. These areas are likely targets for resource assessment studies of heavy minerals and construction or beach nourishment sand.     Inclusive 2H(3He,t) reaction at 2 GeV

    The inclusive 2H(3He,t) reaction has been studied at 2 GeV for energy transfers up to 500 MeV and scattering angles from 0.25 up to 4 degrees. Data are well reproduced by a model based on a coupled-channel approach for describing the NN and N Delta systems. The effect of final state interaction is important in the low energy part of the spectra. In the delta region, the cross-section is very sensitive to the effects of Delta-N interaction and Delta N - NN process. The latter has also a large influence well below the pion threshold. The calculation underestimates the experimental cross-section between the quasi-elastic and the delta peaks; this is possibly due to projectile excitation or purely mesonic exchange currents.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ

    King and Queen County Shoreline Situation Report

    The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Situation Reports are based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. This assessment characterizes conditions in the shorezone observed from a small boat moving along the shoreline. Handheld GPS units record data observations in the field. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions: the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes. Three GIS coverages are generated from the collection technique. They can be downloaded at this site. The GIS coverages use a digitized 1:24,000 scale USGS high water line (HWL) shoreline as the baseline coverage. However, if the position of the digitized HWL differs greatly from the observed shoreline on a 1994 color infra-red digital ortho quarter quadrangle (DOQQ), the shoreline position is corrected to align more closely with the land-water interface observed in the DOQQ. Using ArcInfo, the base shoreline is re-coded with the attributes defined in each coverage. The KQ_lubc coverage are features related to the land use in the riparian zone, and conditions at the bank. The KQ_sstru coverage includes information pertaining to structures for shoreline defense. Finally, KQ_astru identifies structures which are typically built for access and recreational activities at the shore. A metadata file is provided to describe each coverage
