    Poverty-happiness nexus: Does the use of regional poverty lines matter?

    This analysis aims to provide a comprehensive representation of the role of regional disparities in the nexus between poverty and subjective well-being, by adding the territorial dimension to the definition of poverty conditions. We investigate the nexus using regional poverty lines, including different poverty measures and considering different life domains. The analysis focuses on Italy because of its strong regional socio-economic disparities. Results show that the relevance of being poor on the well-being of citizens is in general higher and significant; the intensity and severity of poverty also change for different life domains. Findings are fundamental in designing local policies against poverty

    Brillouin scattering for refractive index sensing in non-adiabatic tapers

    We demonstrate the use of non-adiabatic tapers for refractive index sensing in optical fibers based on Brillouin scattering. By exciting higher order optical modes along the taper, the Brillouin gain spectrum becomes multipeaked, where each peak exhibits a different sensitivity to the refractive index of the surrounding medium. By this method, we demonstrate a sensitivity enhancement of the Brillouin frequency shift to refractive index changes by a factor of ≈ 4, compared to an adiabatic taper with the same waist diameter. Furthermore, the use of the spectral difference between two Brillouin gain peaks provides a temperature-independent measurement of the external refractive index

    Applying artificial intelligence to assess the impact of orthognathic treatment on facial attractiveness and estimated age

    This observational study aimed to use artificial intelligence to describe the impact of orthognathic treatment on facial attractiveness and age appearance. Pre- and post-treatment photographs (n=2164) of 146 consecutive orthognathic patients were collected for this longitudinal retrospective single-centre study. Every image was annotated with patient-related data (age; sex; malocclusion; performed surgery). For every image, facial attractiveness (score: 0-100) and apparent age were established with dedicated convolutional neural networks trained on >0.5million images for age estimation and with >17million ratings for attractiveness. Results for pre- and post-treatment photographs were averaged for every patient separately, and apparent age compared to real age (appearance). Changes in appearance and facial attractiveness were statistically examined. Analyses were performed on the entire sample and subgroups (sex; malocclusion; performed surgery). According to the algorithms, most patients' appearance improved with treatment (66.4%), resulting in younger appearance of nearly 1year [mean change: -0.93years (95% confidence interval (CI): -1.50; -0.36); p=0.002), especially after profile-altering surgery. Orthognathic treatment had similarly a beneficial effect on attractiveness in 74.7% [mean difference: 1.22 (95% CI: 0.81; 1.63); p<0.001], especially after lower jaw surgery. This investigation illustrates that artificial intelligence might be considered to score facial attractiveness and apparent age in orthognathic patients

    LONG-TERM TEMPERATURE MONITORING OF VOLCANIC AREAS BY DISTRIBUTED OPTICAL FIBER SENSORS

    We present the first results of long- term monitoring of temperature profiles at the Campi Flegrei caldera. The measurements were carried out along a 76 meters-deep borehole already equipped with a borehole strain-meter. We installed a cable containing a loop of optical fiber in order to use a fiber-optics distributed sensor based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. The obtained data are consistent with results of both deep and surface geothermal explorations and indicate that geothermal gradient can be efficiently measured and monitored by the proposed technique

    Unexpected different chemoselectivity in the aerobic oxidation of methylated planar catechin and bent epicatechin derivatives catalysed by the Trametes villosa laccase/1-hydroxybenzotriazole system

    Unreported methylated catechin and epicatechin derivatives 5 and 6 were synthesized by an oxa-Pictet- Spengler reaction. Catechin 5 shows the B and C rings coplanar because of the formation of a trans junction between the C ring and the newly generated six-term cycle D, in turn condensed to ring B. In contrast, epicatechin 6 presents a bent geometry due to the establishment of a cis junction between the C ring and the newly formed cycle D. The oxidation of compounds 5 and 6 in the presence of the Trametes villosa laccase/1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) system was investigated under aerobic conditions in both a biphasic system and a reverse micelle. The unexpected different chemoselective oxidation at the benzylic position of catechin and epicatechin derivatives 5 and 6 has been rationalized using a molecular modelling approach. These results demonstrate that the Trametes villosa laccase/HBT system represents a useful tool to functionalize the C-2 or C-4 position of phenolic compounds depending on the structural features

    The adaptation of lipid profile of human fibroblasts to alginate 2D films and 3D printed scaffolds

    Background: The investigation of the interactions between cells and active materials is pivotal in the emerging 3D printing-biomaterial application fields. Here, lipidomics has been used to explore the early impact of alginate (ALG) hydrogel architecture (2D films or 3D printed scaffolds) and the type of gelling agent (CaCl2 or FeCl3) on the lipid profile of human fibroblasts. Methods: 2D and 3D ALG scaffolds were prepared and characterized in terms of water content, swelling, mechanical resistance and morphology before human fibroblast seeding (8 days). Using a liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole-tandem mass spectrometry approach, selected ceramides (CER), lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC), lysophosphatidic acids (LPA) and free fatty acids (FFA) were analyzed. Results: The results showed a clear alteration in the CER expression profile depending of both the geometry and the gelling agent used to prepare the hydrogels. As for LPCs, the main parameter affecting their distribution is the scaffold architecture with a significant decrease in the relative expression levels of the species with higher chain length (C20 to C22) for 3D scaffolds compared to 2D films. In the case of FFAs and LPAs only slight differences were observed as a function of scaffold geometry or gelling agent. Conclusions: Variations in the cell membrane lipid profile were observed for 3D cell cultures compared to 2D and these data are consistent with activation processes occurring through the mutual interactions between fibroblasts and ALG support. These unknown physiologically relevant changes add insights into the discussion about the relationship between biomaterial and the variations of cell biological functions

    Novel Optical Chemical Sensor Based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Inside a Trench Micro-machined in Double Plastic Optical Fiber☆

    Abstract For the detection of chemical agents in different environments, the combination of plastic optical fibers (POFs) and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layers has been tested as a way to obtain a low cost, highly selective and sensitive surface plasmon resonance (SPR) chemical sensor. A novel type of optical chemical sensor based on POF-MIP has been designed and fabricated, and in this work it has been applied for the selective detection of dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS) in transformer oil. This analyte is important in the control of transformer oil, since it is responsible for the corrosive properties of the oil. The new optical sensor platform is based on two plastic optical fibers coupled through a polymer molecularly imprinted for DBDS. The new sensor has been found to be useful for the determination of DBDS in transformer oil
