Multifractality at the spin quantum Hall transition
Statistical properties of critical wave functions at the spin quantum Hall
transition are studied both numerically and analytically (via mapping onto the
classical percolation). It is shown that the index characterizing the
decay of wave function correlations is equal to 1/4, at variance with the
decay of the diffusion propagator. The multifractality spectra of
eigenfunctions and of two-point conductances are found to be
close-to-parabolic, and .Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Chiral Analysis of Quenched Baryon Masses
We extend to quenched QCD an earlier investigation of the chiral structure of
the masses of the nucleon and the delta in lattice simulations of full QCD.
Even after including the meson-loop self-energies which give rise to the
leading and next-to-leading non-analytic behaviour (and hence the most rapid
variation in the region of light quark mass), we find surprisingly little
curvature in the quenched case. Replacing these meson-loop self-energies by the
corresponding terms in full QCD yields a remarkable level of agreement with the
results of the full QCD simulations. This comparison leads to a very good
understanding of the origins of the mass splitting between these baryons.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figure
Chiral extrapolation of lattice data for B-meson decay constant
The B-meson decay constant fB has been calculated from unquenched lattice QCD
in the unphysical region. For extrapolating the lattice data to the physical
region, we propose a phenomenological functional form based on the effective
chiral perturbation theory for heavy mesons, which respects both the heavy
quark symmetry and the chiral symmetry, and the non-relativistic constituent
quark model which is valid at large pion masses. The inclusion of pion loop
corrections leads to nonanalytic contributions to fB when the pion mass is
small. The finite-range regularization technique is employed for the
resummation of higher order terms of the chiral expansion. We also take into
account the finite volume effects in lattice simulations. The dependence on the
parameters and other uncertainties in our model are discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 3 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in EPJ
Chiral Behaviour of the Rho Meson in Lattice QCD
In order to guide the extrapolation of the mass of the rho meson calculated
in lattice QCD with dynamical fermions, we study the contributions to its
self-energy which vary most rapidly as the quark mass approaches zero; from the
processes and . It turns out that in
analysing the most recent data from CP-PACS it is crucial to estimate the
self-energy from using the same grid of discrete momenta as
included implicitly in the lattice simulation. The correction associated with
the continuum, infinite volume limit can then be found by calculating the
corresponding integrals exactly. Our error analysis suggests that a factor of
10 improvement in statistics at the lowest quark mass for which data currently
exists would allow one to determine the physical rho mass to within 5%.
Finally, our analysis throws new light on a long-standing problem with the
J-parameter.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Full analytic forms of the self-energies are

A gamma- and X-ray detector for cryogenic, high magnetic field applications
As part of an experiment to measure the spectrum of photons emitted in
beta-decay of the free neutron, we developed and operated a detector consisting
of 12 bismuth germanate (BGO) crystals coupled to avalanche photodiodes (APDs).
The detector was operated near liquid nitrogen temperature in the bore of a
superconducting magnet and registered photons with energies from 5 keV to 1000
keV. To enlarge the detection range, we also directly detected soft X-rays with
energies between 0.2 keV and 20 keV with three large area APDs. The
construction and operation of the detector is presented, as well as information
on operation of APDs at cryogenic temperatures
Chiral and Gluon Condensates at Finite Temperature
We investigate the thermal behaviour of gluon and chiral condensates within
an effective Lagrangian of pseudoscalar mesons coupled to a scalar glueball.
This Lagrangian mimics the scale and chiral symmetries of QCD. (Submitted to Z.

Spectral functions of isoscalar scalar and isovector electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon at two-loop order
We calculate the imaginary parts of the isoscalar scalar and isovector
electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon up to two-loop order in chiral
perturbation theory. Particular attention is paid on the correct behavior of Im
and Im at the two-pion threshold
in connection with the non-relativistic 1/M-expansion. We recover the
well-known strong enhancement near threshold originating from the nearby
anomalous singularity at . In the
case of the scalar spectral function Im one finds a significant
improvement in comparison to the lowest order one-loop result. Higher order
-rescattering effects are however still necessary to close a remaining
20%-gap to the empirical scalar spectral function. The isovector electric and
magnetic spectral functions Im get additionally enhanced near
threshold by the two-pion-loop contributions. After supplementing their
two-loop results by a phenomenological -meson exchange term one can
reproduce the empirical isovector electric and magnetic spectral functions
fairly well.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physical Review
Higher moments of nucleon spin structure functions in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and in a resonance model
The third moment of the twist-3 part of the nucleon spin structure
function is generalized to arbitrary momentum transfer and is
evaluated in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) up to order
and in a unitary isobar model (MAID). We show how to link
as well as higher moments of the nucleon spin structure functions
and to nucleon spin polarizabilities. We compare our results with the
most recent experimental data, and find a good description of these available
data within the unitary isobar model. We proceed to extract the twist-4 matrix
element which appears in the suppressed term in the twist
expansion of the spin structure function for proton and neutron.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
Cell-specific occupancy of an extended repertoire of CREM and CREB binding loci in male germ cells
Background: CREB and CREM are closely related factors that regulate transcription in response to various stress, metabolic and developmental signals. The CREMÏ activator isoform is selectively expressed in haploid spermatids and plays an essential role in murine spermiogenesis. Results: We have used chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled to sequencing (ChIP-seq) to map CREM and CREB target loci in round spermatids from adult mouse testis and spermatogonia derived GC1-spg cells respectively. We identify more than 9000 genomic loci most of which are cell-specifically occupied. Despite the fact that round spermatids correspond to a highly specialised differentiated state, our results show that they have a remarkably accessible chromatin environment as CREM occupies more than 6700 target loci corresponding not only to the promoters of genes selectively expressed in spermiogenesis, but also of genes involved in functions specific to other cell types. The expression of only a small subset of these target genes are affected in the round spermatids of CREM knockout animals. We also identify a set of intergenic binding loci some of which are associated with H3K4 trimethylation and elongating RNA polymerase II suggesting the existence of novel CREB and CREM regulated transcripts. Conclusions: We demonstrate that CREM and CREB occupy a large number of promoters in highly cell specific manner. This is the first study of CREM target promoters directly in a physiologically relevant tissue in vivo and represents the most comprehensive experimental analysis of CREB/CREM regulatory potential to date
