Underwater acoustic wave generation by filamentation of terawatt ultrashort laser pulses

Acoustic signals generated by filamentation of ultrashort TW laser pulses in water are characterized experimentally. Measurements reveal a strong influence of input pulse duration on the shape and intensity of the acoustic wave. Numerical simulations of the laser pulse nonlinear propagation and the subsequent water hydrodynamics and acoustic wave generation show that the strong acoustic emission is related to the mechanism of superfilamention in water. The elongated shape of the plasma volume where energy is deposited drives the far-field profile of the acoustic signal, which takes the form of a radially directed pressure wave with a single oscillation and a very broad spectrum.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figure

These specific constraints on elocution led us to carry out an aerodynamic study to check phonation, an EPG study tu observe the modification of articulation, and an analysis of labial forces involved with a special mouthpeace. Tests on intelligibility enabled us to evaluate the device in situation of real diving. In the current state, the various results let foresee a reduced but real possibility of spoken communication with a mouthpeace to certain conditionsCette étude porte sur la communication parlée de plongeurs en situation subaquatique. Two-color interferometer for the study of laser filamentation triggered electric discharges in air

International audienceWe present a space and time resolved interferometric plasma diagnostic for use on plasmas where neutral-bound electron contribution to the refractive index cannot be neglected. By recording simultaneously the plasma optical index at 532 and 1064 nm, we are able to extract independently the neutral and free electron density profiles. International audienceIn this work the non-linear opto-acoustic problem which consists in generating an acoustic signal in water from an intense ultra short laser pulse has been studied. The acoustic source obtained could be related to the phenomenon of filamentation which produces a contraction of the initial beam accompanied by the formation of plasma. Relatively recent work has shown that lasers of this type could be used to produce remote acoustic sources with interesting applications to underwater acoustics. The spectrum of the sound source obtained was investigated and its directivity pattern in both planes (plane of the filament and plane 96 TS. Volume 33 – n° 1/2016 perpendicular to the filament) was measured. The sound level of the source as a function of energy, duration, and wavelength of the laser pulse was also measured.Ce travail est relatif à l'étude expérimentale d'un problème d'opto-acoustique non linéaire, consistant à générer un signal acoustique dans l'eau à partir d'un laser pulsé térawatt (TW). Impact of ureido/carboxypenicillin resistance on the prognosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa

International audienceINTRODUCTION: Although Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a leading pathogen responsible for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), the excess in mortality associated with multi-resistance in patients with P. aeruginosa VAP (PA-VAP), taking into account confounders such as treatment adequacy and prior length of stay in the ICU, has not yet been adequately estimated. METHODS: A total of 223 episodes of PA-VAP recorded into the Outcomerea database were evaluated. Patients with ureido/carboxy-resistant P. aeruginosa (PRPA) were compared with those with ureido/carboxy-sensitive P. aeruginosa (PSPA) after matching on duration of ICU stay at VAP onset and adjustment for confounders. RESULTS: Factors associated with onset of PRPA-VAP were as follows: admission to the ICU with septic shock, broad-spectrum antimicrobials at admission, prior use of ureido/carboxypenicillin, and colonization with PRPA before infection. Adequate antimicrobial therapy was more often delayed in the PRPA group. The crude ICU mortality rate and the hospital mortality rate were not different between the PRPA and the PSPA groups. In multivariate analysis, after controlling for time in the ICU before VAP diagnosis, neither ICU death (odds ratio (OR) = 0.73; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.32 to 1.69; P = 0.46) nor hospital death (OR = 0.87; 95% CI: 0.38 to 1.99; P = 0.74) were increased in the presence of PRPA infection. This result remained unchanged in the subgroup of 87 patients who received adequate antimicrobial treatment on the day of VAP diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: After adjustment, and despite the more frequent delay in the initiation of an adequate antimicrobial therapy in these patients, resistance to ureido/carboxypenicillin was not associated with ICU or hospital death in patients with PA-VAP
