Heating and high frequency nonlinearities in the surface impedance of high Tc superconductors
Using the dielectric resonator method, we have investigated nonlinearities in surface impedance Zs = Rs + jXs of YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films at 10 GHz as a function of the incident microwave power level and temperature. The use of a rutile dielectric resonator allows us to measure the precise temperature of the films. We conclusively show that the usually observed increase of the surface resistance of YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin film as function of microwave power is due to local heating
Generation of coherent spin-wave modes in Yttrium Iron Garnet microdiscs by spin-orbit torque
Spin-orbit effects [1-4] have the potential of radically changing the field
of spintronics by allowing transfer of spin angular momentum to a whole new
class of materials. In a seminal letter to Nature [5], Kajiwara et al. showed
that by depositing Platinum (Pt, a normal metal) on top of a 1.3 m thick
Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG, a magnetic insulator), one could effectively transfer
spin angular momentum through the interface between these two different
materials. The outstanding feature was the detection of auto-oscillation of the
YIG when enough dc current was passed in the Pt. This finding has created a
great excitement in the community for two reasons: first, one could control
electronically the damping of insulators, which can offer improved properties
compared to metals, and here YIG has the lowest damping known in nature;
second, the damping compensation could be achieved on very large objects, a
particularly relevant point for the field of magnonics [6,7] whose aim is to
use spin-waves as carriers of information. However, the degree of coherence of
the observed auto-oscillations has not been addressed in ref. [5]. In this
work, we emphasize the key role of quasi-degenerate spin-wave modes, which
increase the threshold current. This requires to reduce both the thickness and
lateral size in order to reach full damping compensation [8] , and we show
clear evidence of coherent spin-orbit torque induced auto-oscillation in
micron-sized YIG discs of thickness 20 nm
Shear viscosity measurements at the vortex melting transition in confined geometry in optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8
International audienceIn order to probe the vortex shear viscosity in the vortex liquid phase, we have introduced two types of vortex-confining structures in optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystals. First, walls of strong vortex pinning separated by weakly pinning channels are fashioned by heavy ion irradiation through 25 um-thick Ni masks. Second, a low density of homogeneously distributed amorphous columnar defects is known to impose a polycrystalline structure to the vortex lattice. Resistivity measurements show that the inclusion of confining structures impede vortex flow in the liquid. The resistivity is remarkably well described by the Halperin-Nelson theory for the viscosity due to free two-dimensional vortex lattice dislocations

Microbial Ecology of French Dry Fermented Sausages and Mycotoxin Risk Evaluation During Storage
Dry fermented sausages are produced worldwide by well-controlled fermentationprocesses involving complex microbiota including many bacterial and fungal species with key technological roles. However, to date, fungal diversity on sausage casings during storage has not been fully described. In this context, we studied the microbial communities from dry fermented sausages naturally colonized or voluntarily surface inoculated with molds during storage using both culture-dependent and metabarcoding methods. Staphylococci and lactic acid bacteria largely dominated in samples, although some halotolerant genera (e.g., Halomonas, Tetragenococcus, and Celerinatantimonas spp.) were also frequently observed. Fungal populations varied from 7.2 to 9.8 log TFU/cm2 sausage casing during storage, suggesting relatively low count variability among products. Fungal diversity identified on voluntarily inoculated casings was lower (dominated by Penicillium nalgiovense and Debaryomyces hansenii) than naturally environment-inoculated fermented sausages (colonized by P. nalgiovense, Penicillium nordicum, and other Penicillium spp. and sporadically by Scopulariopsis sp., D. hansenii, and Candida zeylanoïdes). P. nalgiovense and D. hansenii were systematically identified, highlighting their key technological role. The mycotoxin risk was then evaluated, and in situ mycotoxin production of selected mold isolates was determined during pilot-scale sausage productions. Among the identified fungal species, P. nalgiovense was confirmed not to produce mycotoxins. However, some P. nordicum, Penicillium chrysogenum, Penicillium bialowienzense, Penicillium brevicompactum, and Penicillium citreonigrum isolates produced one or more mycotoxins in vitro. P. nordicum also produced ochratoxin A during pilotscale sausage productions using “worst-case” conditions in the absence of biotic competition. These data provide new knowledge on fermented sausage microbiota and the potential mycotoxin risk during storage
