A Survey for Low-Surface-Brightness Galaxies Around M31. I. The Newly Discovered Dwarf Andromeda V
We present images and a color-magnitude diagram for And V, a new dwarf
spheroidal companion to M31 that was found using a digital filtering technique
applied to 1550 square degrees of the second Palomar Sky Survey. And V resolves
into stars easily in follow-up 4-m V- and I-band images, from which we deduce a
distance of 810 +/- 45 kpc using the tip of the red giant branch method. Within
the uncertainties, this distance is identical to the Population II distances
for M31 and, combined with a projected separation of 112 kpc, provides strong
support for a physical association between the two galaxies. There is no
emission from And V detected in H alpha, 1.4 GHz radio continuum, or IRAS
bandpasses, and there is no young population seen in the color-magnitude
diagram that might suggest that And V is an irregular. Thus, the classification
as a new dwarf spheroidal member of the Local Group seems secure. With an
extinction-corrected central surface brightness of 25.2 V mag per square
arcsec, a mean metal abundance of [Fe/H] approximately -1.5, and no evidence
for upper AGB stars, And V resembles And I & III.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal, November 1998

Tools for understanding the agricultural production systems and their socio-economic context in target regions for the introduction of new banana cultivars: baseline intra-household survey.
Within the framework of the IITA-led project “Improvement of banana for smallholder farmers in the Great Lakes region of Africa” (also known as the “Breeding Better Bananas” project, http://breedingbetterbananas.org), Bioversity International and partners conducted baseline research in the target regions of Luwero and Mbarara in Uganda, and Bukoba, Meru, Moshi and Rungwe in Tanzania during 2015-2016, prior to conducting on-station and on-farm evaluations of the new NARITA banana cultivars.
Five tools were used to characterise the banana and agricultural production systems, and the socioeconomic context of these systems, in the target regions. The research used a mixed-methods, participatory and sex-disaggregated approach to ensure that the knowledge, experiences and opinions of as many people as possible were obtained.
The understanding gained from the baseline research will:
• Be fed into the banana breeding pipeline at multiple entry points to assist with breeding banana cultivars that better meet the requirements of the users. Some of these entry points are: setting of breeding targets; selection of parent material; evaluation in regional on-station and on-farm trials; participatory varietal selection taking into account the criteria (or ‘trait preferences’) that are important to multiple and different users; facilitating access to and adoption of the new cultivars by farmers and other end-users through scaling up the supply of clean planting materials and ensuring equitable distribution of these through the ‘seed’ systems.
• Inform the ongoing adaptive management of the project activities to ensure fair participation and decision-making by people in the affected communities.
• Provide the baseline to evaluate, in conjunction with the endline, the impact of adoption of the new cultivars on households, and individuals within, in the target regions
Simultaneous measurement of atmospheric temperature, humidity, and aerosol extinction and backscatter coefficients by a combined vibrational-pure-rotational Raman lidar
Implementation of the pure-rotational Raman (PRR) lidar method for simultaneous measurement of atmospheric temperature, humidity, and aerosol extinction and backscatter coefficients is reported. The isolation of two wavelength domains of the PRR spectrum and the suppression of the elastically scattered light is carried out by a double-grating polychromator. Experiments involving elastic backscatter from dense clouds and a solid target confirm the high level of suppression of the elastic light in the corresponding acquisition channels of the two selected PRR domains. Calibration of the temperature channel was done both by comparison with an experimentally verified atmospheric temperature model profile and by inter-comparison with radiosondes. Night-time temperature profiles with high vertical resolution were obtained up to the lower stratosphere. The PRR temperature profile combined with the water vapor mixing ratio obtained from the ro-vibrational Raman channel is used to estimate the relative humidit
Knowledge-based scheduling of arrival aircraft
A knowledge-based method for scheduling arrival aircraft in the terminal area has been implemented and tested in real-time simulation. The scheduling system automatically sequences, assigns landing times, and assigns runways to arrival aircraft by utilizing continuous updates of aircraft radar data and controller inputs. The scheduling algorithms is driven by a knowledge base which was obtained in over two thousand hours of controller-in-the-loop real-time simulation. The knowledge base contains a series of hierarchical 'rules' and decision logic that examines both performance criteria, such as delay reduction, as well as workload reduction criteria, such as conflict avoidance. The objective of the algorithms is to devise an efficient plan to land the aircraft in a manner acceptable to the air traffic controllers. This paper will describe the scheduling algorithms, give examples of their use, and present data regarding their potential benefits to the air traffic system

The Properties of Poor Groups of Galaxies: III. The Galaxy Luminosity Function
We obtain R-band photometry for galaxies in six nearby poor groups for which
we have spectroscopic data, including 328 new galaxy velocities. For the five
groups with luminous X-ray halos, the composite group galaxy luminosity
function (GLF) is fit adequately by a Schechter function with Mstar = -21.6 +/-
0.4 + 5log h and alpha = -1.3 +/- 0.1. We also find that (1) the ratio of
dwarfs to giants is significantly larger for the five groups with luminous
X-ray halos than for the one marginally X-ray detected group, (2) the composite
GLF for the luminous X-ray groups is consistent in shape with that for rich
clusters, (3) the composite group GLF rises more steeply at the faint end than
that of the field, (4) the shape difference between the field and composite
group GLF's results mostly from the population of non-emission line galaxies,
whose dwarf-to-giant ratio is larger in the denser group environment than in
the field, and (5) the non-emission line dwarfs are more concentrated about the
group center than the non-emission line giants. This last result indicates that
the dwarfs and giants occupy different orbits (i.e., have not mixed completely)
and suggests that the populations formed at a different times. Our results show
that the shape of the GLF varies with environment and that this variation is
due primarily to an increase in the dwarf-to-giant ratio of quiescent galaxies
in higher density regions, at least up to the densities characteristic of X-ray
luminous poor groups. This behavior suggests that, in some environments, dwarfs
are more biased than giants with respect to dark matter. This trend conflicts
with the prediction of standard biased galaxy formation models. (Abridged)Comment: 36 pages, AASLaTeX with 8 figures. Table 1 also available at

Shear free solutions in General Relativity Theory
The Goldberg-Sachs theorem is an exact result on shear-free null geodesics in
a vacuum spacetime. It is compared and contrasted with an exact result for
pressure-free matter: shear-free flows cannot both expand and rotate. In both
cases, the shear-free condition restricts the way distant matter can influence
the local gravitational field. This leads to intriguing discontinuities in the
relation of the General Relativity solutions to Newtonian solutions in the
timelike case, and of the full theory to the linearised theory in the null
case.
It is a pleasure to dedicate this paper to Josh Goldberg.Comment: 17 pages, no figures. For GRG special issue in honor of Josh Goldber
Ground-based water vapour soundings by microwave radiometry and Raman lidar on Jungfraujoch (Swiss Alps)
International audienceWater vapour has been measured from the International Scientific Station Jungfraujoch (ISSJ, 47° N, 7° E, 3580m above sea level) during the winters of 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 by microwave radiometry and Raman lidar. The abundance of atmospheric water vapour between the planetary boundary layer and the upper stratosphere varies over more than three orders of magnitude. The currently used measurement techniques are only suited to determine the abundance of water vapour in different atmospheric regimes. None can resolve the vertical distribution profile from ground level to the top of the stratosphere by itself. We present such a water vapour profile where simultaneous measurements from a Raman lidar and a microwave radiometer were combined to cover both the troposphere and the stratosphere, respectively. We also present a study of the stratospheric and tropospheric water vapour variability for the two consecutive winters
Explicit Kundt type II and N solutions as gravitational waves in various type D and O universes
A particular yet large class of non-diverging solutions which admits a
cosmological constant, electromagnetic field, pure radiation and/or general
non-null matter component is explicitly presented. These spacetimes represent
exact gravitational waves of arbitrary profiles which propagate in background
universes such as Minkowski, conformally flat (anti-)de Sitter, Edgar-Ludwig,
Bertotti-Robinson, and type D (anti-)Nariai or Plebanski-Hacyan spaces, and
their generalizations. All possibilities are discussed and are interpreted
using a unifying simple metric form. Sandwich and impulsive waves propagating
in the above background spaces with different geometries and matter content can
easily be constructed. New solutions are identified, e.g. type D pure radiation
or explicit type II electrovacuum waves in (anti-)Nariai universe. It is also
shown that, in general, there are no conformally flat Einstein-Maxwell fields
with a non-vanishing cosmological constant.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX 2e. v2: added two references concerning generalized
