Effects of no tillage on the abundance and diversity of soil and olive tree canopy arthropods.
Soil tillage is a traditional practice in the olive groves of Trás-os-Montes region
(Northeast of Portugal) where the soil is maintained without any vegetal cover.
However, this agronomic practice may have dangerous environmental effects of
several orders. In this way, with the present work we aimed to contribute for the
knowledge about the effect of two soil management practices in the olive grove
(traditional tillage in comparison to no tillage) on the arthropods abundance and
diversity of the olive grove soil and the olive tree canopy with special reference to
Formicidae family. The work was developed between April and October of 2004, in two
continuous plots submitted to the following agronomical practices: one plot submitted
to frequent tillage to control weeds, and the other plot was no tilled. Monthly, the soil
fauna was evaluated by 30 pitfall traps and olive canopy fauna was monitored by the
beating technique of 25 trees per plot. The recovered material was sorted and
identified. The results showed the existence of a diverse and rich fauna associated to
the soil of olive grove and olive tree canopy. The olive soil arthropods are constituted
mainly by Formicidae and Collembola

Norte a Sul do continente português.
Metabolic fate of dietary volatile compounds in Pieris brassicae
In this work, the evolution of the qualitative and quantitative profile of the volatile fraction of Pieris brassicae
after feeding on Brassica oleracea var. acephala (kale) was monitored through time. HS-SPME/GC-MS was
applied to both the host plant and the living insect and its excrements. A total of seventy seven compounds
(lipoxygenase pathway by-products, nitrogen compounds, norisoprenoids, sulphur compounds, terpenes,
among others) were identified. Thirty eight compounds were identified in insect after 2 h of starvation and
forty eight compounds in excrements. Qualitative and quantitative changes were detected along time.
Dimethyldisulfide, dimethyltrisulfide, limonene and eugenol were major compounds for all analysed times in
both matrices, being limonene an important compound in insect after starvation. The accumulation by
P. brassicae of some compounds, such as limonene, was verified, suggesting a mechanism by which the insect
can take benefit from bioactive constituents from the diet. Along with accumulation, complete excretion of
some compounds, including nitrogen bearing compounds, by-products of glucosinolates was detected. These
results reflect one of the strategies used to overcome plant barriers, namely detoxification of toxic
compounds. The findings contribute to the knowledge of the metabolization of the volatile compounds in
insects and contribute to the body of knowledge of this ecologic system.FC
No entanto, a informação
Towards noise classification of road pavements
Noise classification of road surfaces has been addressed in many European countries. This
paper presents the first approach towards noise classification of Portuguese road
pavements. In this early stage, it aims at establishing guidelines for decision makers to
support their noise reduction policies and the development of a classification system
adapted to the European recommendations. A ranking to provide guidance on tire-road
noise emission levels for immediate use by decision makers, road authorities, contracting
parties and environmental officers will be established. This research was based on the
results provided by three early studies covering more than ten different surfaces, among
which, rubberized asphalt and experimental non conventional surfaces with optimized
grading. On each road trial, the tire-road noise generated by light vehicles and heavy trucks
at three speed levels were measured by means of the Controlled Pass-By method (CPB).
Three of these runs were also tested by the Close ProXimity method (CPX). Additionally,
tests to characterize texture and skid resistance were performed. The early noise
classification studies of road pavements focused only on the CPB tests. Three groups with
similar acoustical performance were identified. Noise level abatements of about 10 dB
were achieved for the gap graded mixtures with a maximum aggregate size inferior to 10
mm
Silent surfaces : an experience in Portugal
It is acknowledged that traffic noise affects human behaviour and health. Measures aiming
at mitigating the impact of traffic noise are not always viable in urban areas. In Portugal,
road designers have recently started to consider silent surfaces as alternative within their
road pavement projects.
In this paper the tire-surface noise of three surface layers integrated in a rehabilitation
project carried out in an urban road that carries more than 40000 vehicles per day is
assessed: i) one dense asphalt layer with limited maximum aggregate size, following the
SILVIA recommendations for low noise surfaces; ii) two very-thin surfaces with different
grading, which are an adaptation of the very-thin layers widely used in France to
Portuguese conditions.
The surface layers were constructed consecutively, involving segment lengths with more
than 500 m. The surface texture was measured using a high speed profilometer. Skid
resistance was also measured. The noise level was measured both by pass-by tests with
selected traffic (trucks and light vehicles) at several speeds and by close proximity tests.
The thin layers tested provided very good noise reduction values, especially at high
speeds, and had a better performance than gap graded asphalt rubber surfaces frequently
used in Portugal
Land use changes in the Douro Valley and carbon emissions
Deforestation for economic development and urbanisation or urban sprawl as a
result of human population growth is a common feature of land-use change and is an
important source of increased atmospheric CO2. At the global level, carbon emissions
from burning fossil fuels are two to three times higher than carbon sequestration by
land systems, mainly forests and woody vegetation.
The work presented herein focuses on the identification of carbon balance shifts
due to land use changes in a group of municipalities located in the Douro River Valley
in northern Portugal, where the dominance of vineyards and forestry uses over urban
occupation is the norm. However, when urban sprawl occurs through the replacement
of forested areas by urban uses, the ability to sequester carbon dioxide is reduced
while its production rates increase. A thorough study (Lourenço et al., 2008) of land
uses evolution between 1990 and 2000 shows that urban uses have been growing
near Vila Real as well as vineyard plantations. Forest fires and a complex topography
are major causes for the growth of abandonment, which make these areas more prone
to erosion and desertification.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in the scope of the research project PTDC/ECM/73069/200
