Necrotizing Fasciitis and Middle Ear Infection
Monitoring feet temperature using thermography
Studies show that regular monitoring of feet temperature may limit the incidence of disabling conditions such as foot ulcers and lower-limb amputations. Infrared thermometry and liquid crystal thermography were identified as the leading technologies in use today. In this study, we analysed the maximum temperature and tested some mathematical models for the foot temperature distribution
A novel haemoglobin variant mimicking cyanotic congenital heart disease
Screening for critical congenital heart defects in newborn babies can aid in early recognition, with the prospect of improved outcome. However, as this universal newborn screening is implemented, there will be an increasing number of false-positive results. In order to avoid multiple investigations and uncertainty, an haemoglobin (Hb) variant must be included in the differential diagnosis in otherwise well newborns with low oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry. We describe a novel fetal Hb variant (heterozygous γ-globin gene (HBG1) mutation in exon 2 c.202G>A (p.Val68Met)) identified in a newborn with positive pulse oximetry screening for congenital heart disease.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A mosca-da-azeitona, Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin), no Planalto Mirandês: ciclo biológico e importância económica.
região do Planalto Mirandês
Mathematical model of feet temperature
In this work it is consider the problem of finding the best approximation to characterize the feet temperature
distribution. For this study it was consider the nonlinear least squares technique, combined with penalty method, to identify
the function that approximate better the data obtained through thermographic images. The preliminary results indicate that the
best function approximation is based on trigonometric sums

Neutron - Mirror Neutron Oscillations: How Fast Might They Be?
We discuss the phenomenological implications of the neutron (n) oscillation
into the mirror neutron (n'), a hypothetical particle exactly degenerate in
mass with the neutron but sterile to normal matter. We show that the present
experimental data allow a maximal n-n' oscillation in vacuum with a
characteristic time much shorter than the neutron lifetime, in fact as
small as 1 sec. This phenomenon may manifest in neutron disappearance and
regeneration experiments perfectly accessible to present experimental
capabilities and may also have interesting astrophysical consequences, in
particular for the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure; revtex; matches paper published by P.R.
Dialogism in detail: Per Linell’s Rethinking language, mind, and world dialogically and its potentials.
Per Linell’s (2009) book Rethinking language, mind, and world dialogically offers an inte- grated view upon the many strands of Dialogism, establishing itself as an essential ref- erence to the field. In this review of his book we aim to discuss a few selected topics, building upon these with our own views. Initially, we focus on the relevance and urgency of such book by summing up the most important dialogical concepts presented by it. Following our initial argument, we move on to the discussion of contrasts between monological and dialogical perspectives, the concepts of extended mind and the inter- world, suggesting Dialogism as an ontology, and finally, reflecting upon the relation between intersubjectivity and alterity. We conclude our review by stressing how Linell’s book contributes to the unification of an entanglement of different dialogical theories and perspectives, crafting a solid meta-theory. This integration paves the way for a deeper understanding of what constitutes the nature of knowledge and human phenomena, as conceptualized by Dialogism
Cell-free layer (CFL) analysis in a glass capillary: comparison between a manual and automatic method
In this study, in vitro blood flowing through a 100 m glass capillary was studied. The images were captured
using a confocal system and post-processed using Image J and MatLab. The aim of the present work, was to measure the
trajectories of the cell-free layer (CFL) by using two different methods, i. e., a manual method (MM) and an automatic method (AM). For theMM we have used amanual tracking plugin (MTrackJ) from Image J to track labeled red blood cells (RBCs) flowing around the boundary of the RBCs core. For the AM we have used a MatLab scripts to measure automatically the CFL trajectories. The preliminary numerical results suggest that the CFL trajectories follow a
polynomial function for both methods. The authors acknowledge the financial support provided by: PTDC/SAU-BEB/108728/2008, PTDC/SAU-BEB/105650/2008, PTDC/EME-MFE/099109/2008 and PTDC/SAU-ENB/116929/2010 from the FCT (Science and Technology Foundation) and COMPETE, Portugal
