Justifications, Exculpations, Causes: Epistemology and Our Image of Nature
There is a way of thinking about epistemic justification
that holds that it dwells solely in beliefs. According to this
view, any relation between what is believed and any item
different from beliefs – maybe even if it is an item that
could be a belief – is at most a causal relation. This view,
commonly associated to Davidson's take on coherentism,
can be stimulated by some of Wittgenstein's remarks
concerning the irrelevance of interpretations when we
follow rules (1953)
Latour.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe essay explores the notion of horizon in
Eudoro de Sousa under the light of the principle of irreduction
put forward by Bruno Latour. The investigation of what is
originary in ontology – carried out with the help of the notion
of instauration as used by Souriau and Latour – takes us to a
reading of pre-socratic philosophers such as Anaximander and
Anaxagoras from the viewpoint of process philosophy. The notion
of bringing something about in ontology is then connected to the
use of the idea of night in the myth of the horizon as presented
by Eudoro de Sousa
Avalia então as vantagens
identidade. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis paper considers some alternative ways of thinking about truth and
about what we want with it. It also analyzes the problems related to the concept of truth
as correspondence and looks for a diagnosis of the kind of frustration these problems
cause. The paper considers afterwards the deflationists’ alternatives and their difficulties
in offering what we commonly want from the predicate of truth. The paper then
evaluates the advantages and deficiencies of the concept of truth as indefinable and of
the concept of truth as identity
o mundo. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe picture of constraints from the world on our statements and
beliefs as constrains external to thought itself somehow encourage a distinction
between matters of reason and matters of fact. This distinction seems
crucial for some arguments in favour of some versions of externalism. In
this paper, after considering how the distinction between matters of fact
and matters of reason can be made, I put forward and recommend a form
of externalism. I finish by articulating a specific holistic and externalist
approach to the way our thoughts are constraint by the world
Cosmopolitics as a Taste for Cunning: The Plural of the Otherwise and the Principles of Stereoscopy
The idea of a cosmopolitics is considered in terms of the many stories that are simultaneously told by this cosmos. Those stories interact in several political ways and often require a taste for cunning to be heard. This stereoscopic feature of cosmopolitics is considered in terms of some of its salient dimensions: it relies on the ecology of practices, on the anthropology of nature, on the history of beyng, on spectrology and on general economy. As a consequence of this analysis of the cosmopolitical action (or event), this cosmos is persistently open to the otherwise
In this paper I consider two related threats to the idea that our beliefs
compose a germine worldview the global skeptic challenge to the ciam
that our beliefs are somehow grounded and the suspiczon that our beliefs
have no relation to the world whatsoever I consider these two threats
from the point of view of aur activity of doubtmg m order to establish
what follows from our capacity to doubt any claim although not ali at
°rire largue that the two threats can be dispelled if we attend to a careful
consideration of what is involved in doubtmg Once these threats are
disrnissed we find ourselves in a Position that enables us to critique both
a naturalist conception of our worldviews and the conception of reasons
that has been recommended by Brandom
é aprender a ficar sensÃveis a elas. Neste texto examino o realismo quanto a
a qual o reconhecimento lhes é constitutivo. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTWhen we offer reasons for a belief or an action we prompt
the audience to recognize authorities (of facts, of shared observations, of
commonly held principles etc.). This recognition seems to be constitutive of the
very state we find ourselves in when we have or accept reasons. On the other
hand, often we are inclined to say that either we have or we don’t have reasons
for something; we sound as if in case we have reasons, their acceptance is
compulsory. Sometimes, when we move in the space of reasons we have the
impression that reasons are already there, that they are independent from our
best judgment and we should rather learn to be sensitive to their claim. In this
paper I consider realism about reasons as a way of stating externalism and I
then examine connections between externalism in semantics and in epistemology.
I argue that a realism about reasons could make use of a Davidsonian strategy
to put together the idea that reasons are in the world with the conception according
to which recognition is part of what constitutes a reason
conceituais. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe work discusses some common elements present in the
way Hegel and Wittgenstein argue against the idea that objectivity can be
understood in terms of pure receptivity. I consider the impact of Wittgenstein
observations concerning what makes the following of a rule correct , both for
the way we think about correctness and for the contact with the world and
truth. I contrast these observations with Hegel’s use of some Kantian ideas
and how this use brings light to the way we can think about the contact of
our thought with the world. In the course of the elaboration of a position that
could take Hegel’s and Wittgenstein’s arguments, I examine some positions
recently recommended by McDowell, Hornsby and Brandom. I fi nish out
by suggesting a way of thinking about truth without appealing to the image
of an adequatio intellectus ad rem, and a way of thinking about objectivity
that builds on Hegel and Wittgenstein’s arguments against the possibility of
accessing the world without the aid of conceptual practices
Seeing Qualitons as Qualia: A Dialogue with Wittgenstein on Private Experience, Sense Data and the Ontology of Mind
In this paper we put forward the thesis that qualia are tropes (or qualitons), and not (universal) properties. Further, we maintain that Wittgenstein hints in this direction. We also find in Wittgenstein elements of an account of language acquisition that takes the presence of qualia as an enabling condition. We conclude by pointing out some difficulties of this view
