Performance-Based Specifications: Exploring When They Work and Why
There is extensive research and attention on innovation and sustainable public procurement (SPP) in the European Union at present, with the 2014 revision of the Procurement Directives, the Innovation Union strategy and other European Union policy initiatives. This report seeks to contribute to this discussion through the investigation of the use of performance based specifications (PBSs) in public procurement in the European Union and the United States. The report outlines the benefits and limitations of the use of PBSs, even in the most "progressive" public procurement environments, such as the Netherlands, particularly around their ability to support sustainable development goals and deliver environmental benefits for a procuring authority, such as energy and resource efficiency. Additionally, this report aims to identify the sectors in which the enabling conditions for the successful use of PBSs in public procurement are in place and to understand what policies and regulations are needed to promote the use of PBSs in public tenders and public procurement framework agreements
Rapid surface detection of CO2 leaks from geologic sequestration sites
AbstractThis study focuses on developing a method to characterize and detect leakage of carbon dioxide from a geologic sequestration site using a Picarro gas analyser, and to systematically evaluate the robustness of detection ability and optimize the data acquisition parameters by testing under varying conditions at the Zero Emissions Research and Technology field site in Bozeman, MT. It was determined (1) both 12CO2 or 13CO2 measurements provide equally good leak detection ability, (2) wind speed and direction does not limit detection ability with a sampling height less than 30cm, and (3) δ13C measurements did not provide a reliable method for leak detection with our data acquisition strategy

Dirty Divinity
To step into that Other Place–even for just a breath, a blink, a shiver. This is the wistful desire that incited the artwork in the exhibition titled Dirty Divinity. This collection aims to grasp at ancient divinity with metaphorically bloodied fingers. It claims sacredness while confronting the connotations of what that actually means when no longer attached to religious practices–is it sacred if it is also unsettling? Perhaps that is what makes something feel sacred. This writing will explore and uncover this idea deeper.
With this work, I am considering what it means to build an internal mythos, or more aptly, an internal world. I have spent the past year evolving a collection of symbolic imagery that references folklore and religion, yet still stays rooted in my own lived experiences. This exhibition is meant to feel like remnants from the Other Place and to consider if that place is simply inside of us.
Much like the imagery within Dirty Divinity, the theory behind the artwork is interwoven and self-referential. My aspiration is that through repetition, certain ideas will rise to the surface when considering the collection as a whole.</p
The Role of Ram Pressure Stripping in the Quenching of Cluster Star Formation
Recent observations of galaxy clusters have shown that environmental effects
apparently associated with the cluster begin to lower the star formation rates
of galaxies at distances as great as three times the cluster virial radius.
These observations may indicate preprocessing of cluster galaxies in groups or
in the cluster core for galaxies on highly elliptical orbits, but may also
imply that the environmental effects due to the cluster are directly affecting
galaxies on their first infall. To explore these issues, we investigate
different models of ram pressure stripping as it acts on satellite galaxies in
clusters, and compare to observations of the radial star formation gradient in
clusters. We calculate the location of the accretion shock around model
clusters, and use this as the radius of onset of ram pressure stripping in the
GALFORM semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Comparison of the results of
our model, and previously considered, simpler ram pressure models, with recent
observations indicates that current data is unable to strongly discriminate
between models of ram pressure stripping due to the complex interplay of
preprocessing effects at work. However, future observations of a larger sample
of clusters will likely be able to place stronger constraints on the process of
ram pressure stripping and its role in shaping radial trends in and around
