The group A3 chondrules of Krymka: Further evidence for major evaporative loss during the formation of chondrules
Like Semarkona (type 3.0), Krymka (type 3.1) contains two distinct types of chondrule (namely groups A and B) which differ in their bulk compositions, phase compositions, and CL properties. The group A chondrules in both meteorites show evidence for major loss of material by evaporation(i.e. elemental abundance patterns, size, redox state, olivine-pyroxene abundances). Group A and B chondrules probably formed from common or very similar precursors by the same processes acting with different intensities, group A suffering greater mass-loss by evaporation and reduction of FeO and SiO2. While Krymka chondrules share many primary mineralogical and compositional properties with Semarkona chondrules, the minimal metamorphism it has suffered has also had a significant effect on its chondrules
Spherical Vesicles Distorted by a Grafted Latex Bead: An Exact Solution
We present an exact solution to the problem of the global shape description
of a spherical vesicle distorted by a grafted latex bead. This solution is
derived by treating the nonlinearity in bending elasticity through the
(topological) Bogomol'nyi decomposition technique and elastic compatibility. We
recover the ``hat-model'' approximation in the limit of a small latex bead and
find that the region antipodal to the grafted latex bead flattens. We also
derive the appropriate shape equation using the variational principle and

Self-reported illness among Boston-area international travelers: A prospective study

METHODS: Travelers were recruited 2009-2011 during pre-travel consultation at three clinics. The investigation included pre-travel data, weekly during-travel diaries, and a post-travel questionnaire. We analyzed demographics, trip characteristics, health problems experienced, and assessed the relationship between influenza vaccination, influenza prevention advice, and respiratory symptoms.
RESULTS:Of 987 enrolled travelers, 628 (64%) completed all surveys, of which 400 (64%) reported health problems during and/or after travel; median trip duration was 12 days. Diarrhea affected the most people during travel (172) while runny/stuffy nose affected the most people after travel (95). Of those with health problems during travel, 25% stopped or altered plans; 1% were hospitalized. After travel, 21% stopped planned activities, 23% sought physician or other health advice; one traveler was hospitalized. Travelers who received influenza vaccination and influenza prevention advice had lower rates of respiratory symptoms than those that received influenza prevention advice alone (18% vs 28%, P = 0.03).
CONCLUSIONS:A large proportion of Boston-area travelers reported health problems despite pre-travel consultation, resulting in inconveniences. The combination of influenza prevention advice and influenza immunization was associated with fewer respiratory symptoms than those who received influenza prevention advice alone
Kondo engineering : from single Kondo impurity to the Kondo lattice
In the first step, experiments on a single cerium or ytterbium Kondo impurity
reveal the importance of the Kondo temperature by comparison to other type of
couplings like the hyperfine interaction, the crystal field and the intersite
coupling. The extension to a lattice is discussed. Emphasis is given on the
fact that the occupation number of the trivalent configuration may be the
implicit key variable even for the Kondo lattice. Three phase
diagrams are discussed: CeRuSi, CeRhIn and SmS
Axially symmetric membranes with polar tethers
Axially symmetric equilibrium configurations of the conformally invariant
Willmore energy are shown to satisfy an equation that is two orders lower in
derivatives of the embedding functions than the equilibrium shape equation, not
one as would be expected on the basis of axial symmetry. Modulo a translation
along the axis, this equation involves a single free parameter c.If c\ne 0, a
geometry with spherical topology will possess curvature singularities at its
poles. The physical origin of the singularity is identified by examining the
Noether charge associated with the translational invariance of the energy; it
is consistent with an external axial force acting at the poles. A one-parameter
family of exact solutions displaying a discocyte to stomatocyte transition is

Channel Interference in a Quasi Ballistic Aharonov-Bohm Experiment
New experiments are presented on the transmission of electron waves through a
2DEG (2 dimensional electron gas) ring with a gate on top of one of the
branches. Magnetoconductance oscillations are observed, and the phase of the
Aharanov-Bohm signal alternates between 0 and pi as the gate voltage is
scanned. A Fourier transform of the data reveals a dominant period in the
voltage which corresponds to the energy spacing between successive transverse
modes.A theoretical model including random phase shifts between successive

Focusing on the latter, advances in Digital Earth have established vital bridges to exploit these sensors and their networks by taking location as a key element. The current era of connectivity envisions that everything is connected to everything. The concept of the Internet of Things(IoT)emergedasaholisticproposaltoenableanecosystemofvaried,heterogeneous networked objects and devices to speak to and interact with each other. To make the IoT ecosystem a reality, it is necessary to understand the electronic components, communication protocols, real-time analysis techniques, and the location of the objects and devices. The IoT ecosystem and the Digital Earth (DE) jointly form interrelated infrastructures for addressing today’s pressing issues and complex challenges. In this chapter, we explore the synergies and frictions in establishing an efficient and permanent collaboration between the two infrastructures, in order to adequately address multidisciplinary and increasingly complex real-world problems. Although there are still some pending issues, the identified synergies generate optimism for a true collaboration between the Internet of Things and the Digital Earth
Anomalous Conductance Distribution in Quasi-One Dimension: Possible Violation of One-Parameter Scaling Hypothesis
We report measurements of conductance distribution in a set of
quasi-one-dimensional gold wires. The distribution includes the second cumulant
or the variance which describes the universal conductance fluctuations, and the
third cumulant which denotes the leading deviation. We have observed an
asymmetric contribution--or, a nonvanishing third cumulant--contrary to the
expectation for quasi-one-dimensional systems in the noninteracting theories in
the one-parameter scaling framework, which include the perturbative
diagrammatic calculations and the random matrix theory.Comment: 5 PAGE
Self-Dual Bending Theory for Vesicles
We present a self-dual bending theory that may enable a better understanding
of highly nonlinear global behavior observed in biological vesicles. Adopting
this topological approach for spherical vesicles of revolution allows us to
describe them as frustrated sine-Gordon kinks. Finally, to illustrate an
application of our results, we consider a spherical vesicle globally distorted
