Red giant branch stars as probes of stellar populations. II. Properties of the newly discovered globular cluster GLIMPSE-C01

Deep near infrared photometry of the newly discovered Galactic globular Cluster GLIMPSE-C01 is reported. We derived for the first time the metal abundance of this object from the slope of the RGB: [Fe/H]=-1.61+/-0.14 in the scale of Zinn (as implemented in Harris 1996), [Fe/H]=-1.44+/-0.12 in the scale of Caretta & Gratton (1997), and [Fe/H]=-1.12+/-0.12 in the scale of Ferraro et al. (1999). The tip and the clump of the red giant branch were used to confirm the estimates of Kobulnicky et al. (2005), placing the cluster at D~3.7+/-0.8 kpc, behind A_v~15 mag of visual extinction. The best fit to the radial surface brightness profile with a single-mass King's model (1962) yielded core radius r_c=0.78 arcmin, tidal radius r_t=27 arcmin, and central concentration c=1.54. Finally, we estimate the number of the "missing" globulars in the central region of the Milky Way. Based on the spatial distribution of the known clusters, and assuming radial symmetry around the Galactic center, we conclude that the Milky Way contains at least 10+/-3 undiscovered objects. Impact of a sketch-based tutoring system at multiple universities

Large class sizes in engineering programs often prevent instructors from providing detailed and meaningful feedback to students on their homework problems. While the literature shows that frequent and immediate formative feedback has several benefits in terms of knowledge gain and academic motivation, several instructors struggle to provide any feedback. Motivated by this inability, a sketch-based virtual tutoring system, named Mechanix, has been developed and implemented. Mechanix lets the students to sketch their freebody diagram on a virtual interface and the process involved is very close to using a pencil and paper. The system provides real-time feedback on the accuracy of their Freebody diagrams and the solution to the problem. This paper reports the implementation of Mechanix at two large public universities in the United States - Georgia Institute of Technology and Texas State University. Mechanix is used to solve specific assignments from each school that involve the use of freebody diagrams. Pre- and post- concept inventories are used to measure the improvements in the conceptual understanding of the students. The results show that students who solve their homework using Mechanix outperform their peers who do not in one school, whereas the results are similar across the two groups in the second school. The evaluation of the concept inventories shows that the students who used Mechanix has the same level of improvement in their conceptual knowledge compared to the control group

Thermophile 90S Pre-ribosome Structures Reveal the Reverse Order of Co-transcriptional 18S rRNA Subdomain Integration

The ‘birth’ of the eukaryotic ribosome is preceded by RNA folding and processing reactions that depend on assembly factors and snoRNAs. The 90S (SSU-processome) is the earliest pre-ribosome structurally analyzed, which was suggested to assemble stepwise along the growing pre-rRNA from 5’>3’, but this directionality may not be accurate. Here, by analyzing the structure of series of novel 90S assembly intermediates isolated from Chaetomium thermophilum, we discover a reverse order of 18S rRNA subdomain incorporation. This revealed that large parts of the 18S rRNA 3’ and central domains assemble first into the 90S, before the 5’ domain is stably integrated. This final incorporation depends on a physical contact between a heterotrimer Enp2-Bfr2-Lcp1 recruited to the flexible 5’ domain and Kre33, which reconstitutes the Kre33-Enp-Brf2-Lcp5 module on the compacted 90S pre-ribosome. Keeping the 5’ domain temporarily segregated from the 90S scaffold could provide an extra time to complete the multifaceted 5’ domain folding, which depends on a distinct set of snoRNAs and processing factors

Co-translational capturing of nascent ribosomal proteins by their dedicated chaperones

Exponentially growing yeast cells produce every minute >160,000 ribosomal proteins. Owing to their difficult physicochemical properties, the synthesis of assembly-competent ribosomal proteins represents a major challenge. Recent evidence highlights that dedicated chaperone proteins recognize the N-terminal regions of ribosomal proteins and promote their soluble expression and delivery to the assembly site. Here we explore the intuitive possibility that ribosomal proteins are captured by dedicated chaperones in a co-translational manner. Affinity purification of four chaperones (Rrb1, Syo1, Sqt1 and Yar1) selectively enriched the mRNAs encoding their specific ribosomal protein clients (Rpl3, Rpl5, Rpl10 and Rps3). X-ray crystallography reveals how the N-terminal, rRNA-binding residues of Rpl10 are shielded by Sqt1’s WD-repeat β-propeller, providing mechanistic insight into the incorporation of Rpl10 into pre-60S subunits. Co-translational capturing of nascent ribosomal proteins by dedicated chaperones constitutes an elegant mechanism to prevent unspecific interactions and aggregation of ribosomal proteins on their road to incorporation

The United States COVID-19 Forecast Hub dataset

Academic researchers, government agencies, industry groups, and individuals have produced forecasts at an unprecedented scale during the COVID-19 pandemic. To leverage these forecasts, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partnered with an academic research lab at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to create the US COVID-19 Forecast Hub. Launched in April 2020, the Forecast Hub is a dataset with point and probabilistic forecasts of incident cases, incident hospitalizations, incident deaths, and cumulative deaths due to COVID-19 at county, state, and national, levels in the United States. Included forecasts represent a variety of modeling approaches, data sources, and assumptions regarding the spread of COVID-19. The goal of this dataset is to establish a standardized and comparable set of short-term forecasts from modeling teams. These data can be used to develop ensemble models, communicate forecasts to the public, create visualizations, compare models, and inform policies regarding COVID-19 mitigation.
