Desarrollo, educación y pobreza en México

Este trabajo analiza el desarrollo, la educación y la pobreza en México, por la íntima correlación existente entre ellos. El desarrollo implica acceso a beneficios básicos, como educación, alimentos, servicios de salud, vivienda, empleo y una justa distribución de los ingresos; la educación es el conjunto de acciones e influencias institucionales cuyo fin es cultivar y desarrollar en el individuo aptitudes, conocimientos, competencias, actitudes y comportamientos, lo que permite el despliegue de las capacidades que tienen que ver con la autonomía y libertad de hombres y mujeres; por último, la pobreza, amén de la carencia y exclusión que contiene, es una negación de oportunidades y opciones para dicho desarrollo, lo cual limita las capacidades personales

Cultural Relevance of the Transtheoretical Model in Physical Activity Promotion: Mexican-American Women’s use of the Processes of Change

Hispanic women in the U.S. have disproportionately high rates of obesity and health disparities related to insufficient physical activity (PA). While the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) is one of the most commonly used behavioral theories in interventions promoting PA, there is a lack of evidence to support the cultural relevance of theoretical constructs for increasing PA in Hispanic women. To learn about Hispanic women’s use and interpretation of the construct Processes of Change (POC) for increasing PA, we conducted focus groups with overweight/obese Mexican/Mexican-American females (N=13) ages 27-40 years. Major themes centered on the importance of children and family caretaking, social support, and PA to promote weight loss. Participants identified strategies they use to enact the POC for increasing PA such as retos (challenges), exercise as an alternative to eating, and clothing as a reward/reminder for PA. This study examined culture-specific factors used by Mexican-American women for becoming more physically active as they correspond to the theoretical constructs of the TTM. We showed that the POC examined in our study are culturally relevant and enacted by Mexican-American women for increasing PA, and are poised to be deployed in culturally appropriate PA promotion and weight loss interventions

Quasar-galaxy associations revisited

Gravitational lensing predicts an enhancement of the density of bright, distant QSOs around foreground galaxies. We measure this QSO-galaxy correlation w_qg for two complete samples of radio-loud quasars, the southern 1Jy and Half-Jansky samples. The existence of a positive correlation between z~1 quasars and z~0.15 galaxies is confirmed at a p=99.0% significance level (>99.9%) if previous measurements on the northern hemisphere are included). A comparison with the results obtained for incomplete quasar catalogs (e.g. the Veron-Cetty and Veron compilation) suggests the existence of an `identification bias', which spuriously increases the estimated amplitude of the quasar-galaxy correlation for incomplete samples. This effect may explain many of the surprisingly strong quasar-galaxy associations found in the literature. Nevertheless, the value of w_qg that we measure in our complete catalogs is still considerably higher than the predictions from weak lensing. Branching rate expansion around annihilating random walks

We present some exact results for branching and annihilating random walks. We compute the nonuniversal threshold value of the annihilation rate for having a phase transition in the simplest reaction-diffusion system belonging to the directed percolation universality class. Also, we show that the accepted scenario for the appearance of a phase transition in the parity conserving universality class must be improved. In order to obtain these results we perform an expansion in the branching rate around pure annihilation, a theory without branching. This expansion is possible because we manage to solve pure annihilation exactly in any dimension.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Multipartite Entangled Spatial Modes of Ultracold Atoms Generated and Controlled by Quantum Measurement

We show that the effect of measurement back-action results in the generation of multiple many-body spatial modes of ultracold atoms trapped in an optical lattice, when scattered light is detected. The multipartite mode entanglement properties and their nontrivial spatial overlap can be varied by tuning the optical geometry in a single setup. This can be used to engineer quantum states and dynamics of matter fields. We provide examples of multimode generalizations of parametric down-conversion, Dicke, and other states, investigate the entanglement properties of such states, and show how they can be transformed into a class of generalized squeezed states. Further, we propose how these modes can be used to detect and measure entanglement in quantum gases.Comment: 6 Pages, 3 Figures, Supplemental Material include
