The Hall Triple Systems of Small Class

    Get PDF
A Hall triple system (HTS) is a Steiner triple system in which any three non-collinear points generate an affine plane AG(2, 3). Let k be the central nilpotency class of the corresponding Moufang loop. When k = 2 or 3, and when k ⩾ 4 we determine the, possible values of the order with respect to the dimension. Moreover we prove that there are only four HTSs of order 36. Recall that Marshall Hall Jr. (resp. Kepka and the author independently) had proved that there are only two HTSs of order 34 (resp. 35). As a consequence one may give now the complete list of centreless Fischer groups in which the number of order 2 elements is at most 36

Prediction of Adolescent Sexual Reoffending: A Meta-Analysis of the J-SOAP-II, ERASOR, J-SORRAT-II, and Static-99

Several risk assessment tools, including the Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol-II (Prentky & Righthand, 2003), the Estimate of Risk of Adolescent Sexual Offense Recidivism (Worling & Curwen, 2001), the Juvenile Sexual Offense Recidivism Risk Assessment Tool-II (Epperson, ralston, Fowers, DeWitt, & Gore, 2006), and the Static-99 (Hanson & Thornton, 1999), have been used to assess reoffense risk among adolescents who have committed sexual offenses. Given that research on these tools has yielded somewhat mixed results, we empirically synthesized 33 published and unpublished studies involving 6,196 male adolescents who had committed a sexual offense. We conducted two separate meta-analyses, first with correlations and then with AUCs. Total scores on each of the tools significantly predicted sexual reoffending, with aggregated correlations ranging from .12 - .20 and aggregated area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) scores ranging from .64 - .67. In many cases, however, heterogeneity across studies was moderate to high. There were no significant differences between tools, and although the Static-99 was developed for adults, it achieved similar results as the adolescent tools. To help interpret these findings, results are compared to other meta-analyses of risk tools used in the area of violence risk assessment and in other fields

TRA-905: ENCOUNTERING RAINBOW MUSSEL, A SPECIES AT RISK, DURING CONSTRUCTION OF A STORMWATER MANAGEMENT FACILITY

Many freshwater mussels in the Ontario-Great Lakes Area are considered Species at Risk (SAR) and these are increasingly influencing planning, implementation, and monitoring of infrastructure projects near watercourses. In 2010, the City of London commissioned an on-line Stormwater Management Facility in the Stoney Creek watershed in the form of an Erosion Control Wetland. Design objectives included: creation of additional water storage in the floodplain, prevent erosion in the downstream watercourse, and reclaim natural heritage features lost during infrastructure development. Erosion and sediment controls were applied during construction; however, storm events in December 2011 washed out a section of bank that had separated Stoney Creek from the active construction site. The washout released streambed sediments and mussels, including the previously unrecorded SAR Rainbow mussel, into the work area. An emergency mussel relocation protocol was developed, through a collaboration between applicable agencies, to relocate the mussels during the winter months. Ultimately, 16 of 70 mussels collected during the winter relocations were SAR. The timing of the bank collapse and mussel relocations provided a unique situation where recapture and growth comparisons could be made between mussels relocated in extreme weather conditions to mussels relocated during optimal handling temperatures. The Stoney Creek project demonstrated construction delays and costs associated with SAR mussel discovery. The project highlights the importance of detailed environmental assessments prior to project planning so appropriate mitigation measures and environmental monitoring requirements are implemented during construction

I present in this article a notice that a book will shortly appear in print, entitled Le verace istorie Romane (The True Roman Histories) based on manu- script Hamilton 67 of the German State Library of Berlin, dated 1313. In it, I point out the connection between diffent manuscripts, the writer Lapo Corsini’s form of writing and its history, and its unique contamination between a transla- tion from French, the Histoire ancienne, and its Latin source, Orosius, Histories Against the Pagans. At the end, I present two samples of the text, from the Han- nibal story and the wonders that appear, and the plague and infestation of cric- kets.
