    Hermeneutic single case efficacy design: A systematic review of published research and current standards

    open4siThis article systematically reviews the methodological characteristics of Hermeneutic Single Case Efficacy Design (HSCED) studies published in peer-reviewed journals. HSCED provides researchers with a flexible and viable alternative to both between-groups and within-subject experimental designs. This article includes a description of the evolution of the methodology distinctive to HSCED; a discussion of results of HSCED studies considered within a framework of contemporary standards and guidelines for systematic case study research; a presentation of recommendations for key characteristics (e.g., diagnosis, hermeneutic analysis, adjudication procedure). Overall, the aim is provide researchers and reviewers with a resource for conducting and evaluating HSCED research. The results of a systematic review of 13 studies suggests that published HSCED research meets contemporary criteria for systematic case study research. Hermeneutic analysis and adjudication emerged as areas of HSCED practice characterized by a diversity of procedures.     Project and Realization of a Wide-Range High-Frequency RFID Gate Allowing Omnidirectional Detection of Transponders

    The paper describes the study and development of a 2-meter-wide HF RFID gate providing omnidirectional detection of transponders.Common commercial HF RFID gate structures provide a maximum reading range around 150 cm.Moreover, this value is in most cases guaranteed only for the maximum coupling direction, with lower values for the other 2 orientations. The proposed structure raises the value of the reading range up to 200 cm for every orientation of the transponder, with even better results (220 cm) when the transponder is in the position of maximum coupling. This result has been achieved through numerical simulations, focused on the study of the geometry of the antenna system and on the realization of the matching circuit and then confirmed with the physical implementation of the system

    RFID Applications for Sanitary Environments

    Healthcare represents one of the most significant sectors where the diffusion of RFID technology is growing day by day. Many different applications have already been studied and developed, with both active and passive devices working at all the available operative frequencies. Sanitary environments are nowadays extremely complex structures employing several thousands of people with very strict safety requirements: in emergency situations for example 5 minutes can make the difference for a patient between survive and die. RFID is especially indicated to be employed in these scenarios for two main reasons: first of all because it’s a particularly reliable technology, with good performances, few errors and fast interaction, and secondly because, due to the presence of many different technological systems, ad-hoc solutions can be designed on the specific requirements of the application to be realized. At present the most common RFID applications in healthcare can be divided into two main categories: the items tracking and the tracking and identification of people, patients and sanitary operators. The items tracking is performed in order to avoid the loss of expensive devices and to reduce wasting of time during assistance operations: systems studied and realized for this purpose cover all the range of RFID systems and provide different services according to their different performances. RFID systems for the identification of people probably represent the most interesting sector, due to the variety of different applications that can be studied and realized. The most common systems foresee the use of RFID for the tracking of sanitary operators or patients during their assistance operations. Along with this many other applications have been implemented, including systems operating the unambiguous matching between the patient and his treatments (for example the medicine or the blood sack) or between the mother and the child in the paediatrics departments. Finally the availability of a memory on the transponders fostered to the use of RFID technology also as a mean to promptly store and retrieve patient related information: for example electronic case history or electronic medical prescription applications have been studied and developed

    Legius syndrome: Case report and review of literature

    A 8-month-old child was referred to our Dermatologic Unit for suspected Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF 1), because of the appearance, since few days after birth, of numerous caf\ue9-au-lait spots (seven larger than 5 mm); no other sign evocative of NF 1 was found. Her family history was remarkable for the presence of multiple caf\ue9-au-lait spots in the mother, the grandfather and two aunts. The family had been already examined for NF 1, but no sign evocative of the disease was found. We then suspected Legius syndrome, a dominant disease characterized by a mild neurofibromatosis 1 phenotype. The diagnosis was confirmed by the finding of a mutation in SPRED1 gene, a feedback regulator of RAS/MAPK signaling. Here, we discuss the differential diagnosis of caf\ue8-au-lait spots and we briefly review the existing literature about Legius syndrome

    Torsion Test vs. Other Methods to Obtain the Shear Strength of Elastic-Plastic Adhesives

    Nowadays adhesive joints are more and more used; therefore, a precise and reliable shear strength measurement of these joints is necessary to design and predict a final components’ performance. This work aimed to assess the shear strength value of adhesively joined ceramics (SiC, Si3N4) and steel in the case of an elasto‐plastic (ductile) joining material (Loctite EA 9321 AERO) by an experimental campaign and associated analytical modelling. The joined samples were tested using a single lap offset test in compression (SLO), an asymmetrical 4‐point bending test (A4PB, ASTM C1469), and by torsion on fully joined hourglass shaped samples (THG). A simple model based on the elastic‐plastic response in shear was proposed to fit the torque‐rotation curve measured in the torsion tests. The results showed that, with the adopted test methods and conditions, and by using the model, consistent values of shear strength could be obtained by torsion tests

    The archaeal elongation factor EF-2 induces the release of aIF6 from 50S ribosomal subunit

    The translation factor IF6 is a protein of about 25 kDa shared by the Archaea and the Eukarya but absent in Bacteria. It acts as a ribosome anti-association factor that binds to the large subunit preventing the joining to the small subunit. It must be released from the large ribosomal subunit to permit its entry to the translation cycle. In Eukarya, this process occurs by the coordinated action of the GTPase Efl1 and the docking protein SBDS. Archaea do not possess a homolog of the former factor while they have a homolog of SBDS. In the past, we have determined the function and ribosomal localization of the archaeal (Sulfolobus solfataricus) IF6 homolog (aIF6) highlighting its similarity to the eukaryotic counterpart. Here, we analyzed the mechanism of aIF6 release from the large ribosomal subunit. We found that, similarly to the Eukarya, the detachment of aIF6 from the 50S subunit requires a GTPase activity which involves the archaeal elongation factor 2 (aEF-2). However, the release of aIF6 from the 50S subunits does not require the archaeal homolog of SBDS, being on the contrary inhibited by its presence. Molecular modeling, using published structural data of closely related homologous proteins, elucidated the mechanistic interplay between the aIF6, aSBDS, and aEF2 on the ribosome surface. The results suggest that a conformational rearrangement of aEF2, upon GTP hydrolysis, promotes aIF6 ejection. On the other hand, aSBDS and aEF2 share the same binding site, whose occupation by SBDS prevents aEF2 binding, thereby inhibiting aIF6 release
