Astrometric observations of the faint satellites of Jupiter during the 1975 - 1976 opposition
The series of astrometric observations of the satellites of the trans-martian planets re-established at the McDonald Observatory in 1972 is continued. The positions deduced from photographic observations of the jovian system obtained during the 1975-76 opposition are presented together with the discovery positions of four asteroids found on these plates
Starobinsky-Type Inflation from -Corrections
Working in the Large Volume Scenario (LVS) of IIB Calabi-Yau flux
compactifications, we construct inflationary models from recently computed
higher derivative -corrections. Inflation is driven by a Kaehler
modulus whose potential arises from the aforementioned corrections, while we
use the inclusion of string loop effects just to ensure the existence of a
graceful exit when necessary. The effective inflaton potential takes a
Starobinsky-type form , where we obtain one set-up
with and one with corresponding to inflation
occurring for increasing or decreasing respectively. The inflationary
observables are thus in perfect agreement with PLANCK, while the two scenarios
remain observationally distinguishable via slightly varying predictions for the
tensor-to-scalar ratio . Both set-ups yield . They hence realise inflation with moderately large fields
without saturating the Lyth
bound. Control over higher corrections relies in part on tuning underlying
microscopic parameters, and in part on intrinsic suppressions. The intrinsic
part of control arises as a leftover from an approximate effective shift
symmetry at parametrically large volume.Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures; v2: clarifications and refs adde
NGC 4314. III. Inflowing Molecular Gas Feeding a Nuclear Ring of Star Formation
NGC 4314 is an early-type barred galaxy containing a nuclear ring of recent
star formation. We present CO(1-0) interferometer data of the bar and
circumnuclear region with 2.3 x 2.2 arcsec spatial resolution and 13 km/s
velocity resolution acquired at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory . These data
reveal a clumpy circumnuclear ring of molecular gas. We also find a peak of CO
inside the ring within 2 arcsec of the optical center that is not associated
with massive star formation. We construct a rotation curve from these CO
kinematic data and the mass model of Combes et al. (1992). Using this rotation
curve, we have identified the location of orbital resonances in the galaxy.
Assuming that the bar ends at corotation, the circumnuclear ring of star
formation lies between two Inner Lindblad Resonances, while the nuclear stellar
bar ends near the IILR. Deviations from circular motion are detected just
beyond the CO and H-alpha ring, where the dust lanes along the leading edge of
the bar intersect the nuclear ring. These non-circular motions along the minor
axis correspond to radially inward streaming motions at speeds of 20 - 90 km/s
and clearly show inflowing gas feeding an ILR ring. There are bright HII
regions near the ends of this inflow region, perhaps indicating triggering of
star formation by the inflow.Comment: 25 pages, uses aasms.sty. 7 Postscript figures, 12 JPEG figures.

Interferometric Astrometry of the Low-mass Binary Gl 791.2 (= HU Del) Using Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor 3: Parallax and Component Masses
With fourteen epochs of fringe tracking data spanning 1.7y from Fine Guidance
Sensor 3 we have obtained a parallax (pi_abs=113.1 +- 0.3 mas) and perturbation
orbit for Gl 791.2A. Contemporaneous fringe scanning observations yield only
three clear detections of the secondary on both interferometer axes. They
provide a mean component magnitude difference, Delta V = 3.27 +- 0.10. The
period (P = 1.4731 yr) from the perturbation orbit and the semi-major axis (a =
0.963 +- 0.007 AU) from the measured component separations with our parallax
provide a total system mass M_A + M_B = 0.412 +- 0.009 M_sun. Component masses
are M_A=0.286 +- 0.006 M_sun and M_B = 0.126 +- 0.003 M_sun. Gl 791.2A and B
are placed in a sparsely populated region of the lower main sequence
mass-luminosity relation where they help define the relation because the masses
have been determined to high accuracy, with errors of only 2%.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures. The paper is to appear in August 2000 A
Dynamics of molecular nanomagnets in time-dependent external magnetic fields: Beyond the Landau-Zener-St\"{u}ckelberg model
The time evolution of the magnetization of a magnetic molecular crystal is
obtained in an external time-dependent magnetic field, with sweep rates in the
kT/s range. We present the 'exact numerical' solution of the time dependent
Schr\"{o}dinger equation, and show that the steps in the hysteresis curve can
be described as a sequence of two-level transitions between adiabatic states.
The multilevel nature of the problem causes the transition probabilities to
deviate significantly from the predictions of the Landau-Zener-St\"{u}ckelberg
model. These calculations allow the introduction of an efficient approximation
method that accurately reproduces the exact results. When including phase
relaxation by means of an appropriate master equation, we observe an interplay
between coherent dynamics and decoherence. This decreases the size of the
magnetization steps at the transitions, but does not modify qualitatively the
physical picture obtained without relaxation.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

The Internal Proper Motions Of Stars In The Open Cluster M35
Relative proper motions, based on 108 orbits of Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor data extending from 1992 to 2006, are reported for 74 stars in the open cluster M35 (NGC 2168). A subset of 22 of these objects are then used to compute the cluster's internal proper motion dispersions in both right ascension and declination. We find that these dispersions are equal to within their measurement errors. The average one-dimensional dispersion is 0.018 +/- 0.002 arcsec century(-1). When combined with the M35 radial velocity dispersion of 0.65 +/- 0.10 km s(-1) found by Geller et al., this produces a cluster distance of 762 +/- 145 pc. Using isochrone fits to the cluster main sequence, this distance suggests that M35 has an age of about 133 Myr. Although this age is consistent with that typically found for M35, the formal error in the dynamical distance of +/- 19% can accommodate ages between 65 Myr and 201 Myr.McDonald Observator
Canonical Equivalence of a Generic 2D Dilaton Gravity Model and a Bosonic String Theory
We show that a canonical tranformation converts, up to a boundary term, a
generic 2d dilaton gravity model into a bosonic string theory with a
Minkowskian target space.Comment: LaTeX file, 9 pages, no figure
Astrometric Discovery of GJ 164B
We discovered a low-mass companion to the M-dwarf GJ 164 with the CCD-based
imaging system of the Stellar Planet Survey (STEPS) astrometric program. The
existence of GJ 164B was confirmed with Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS imaging
observations. A high-dispersion spectral observation in V sets a lower limit of
delta m> 2.2 mag between the two components of the system. Based upon our
parallax value of 0.082 +/- 0.008, we derive the following orbital parameters:
P = 2.04 +/- 0.03 y, a = 1.03 +/- 0.03 AU, and Mtotal = 0.265 +/- 0.020 MSun.
The component masses are MA = 0.170 +/- 0.015 MSun and MB = 0.095 +/- 0.015
MSun. Based on its mass, colors, and spectral properties, GJ 164B has spectral
type M6-8 V.Comment: pdf file 14 pages with 6 fig
