Higher Landau levels contribution to the energy of interacting electrons in a quantum dot
Properly regularized second-order degenerate perturbation theory is applied
to compute the contribution of higher Landau levels to the low-energy spectrum
of interacting electrons in a disk-shaped quantum dot. At ``filling factor''
near 1/2, this contribution proves to be larger than energy differences between
states with different spin polarizations. After checking convergence of the
method in small systems, we show results for a 12-electron quantum dot, a
system which is hardly tractable by means of exact diagonalization techniques.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Using 3D Spectroscopy to Probe the Orbital Structure of Composite Bulges
Detailed imaging and spectroscopic analysis of the centers of nearby S0 and
spiral galaxies shows the existence of "composite bulges", where both classical
bulges and disky pseudobulges coexist in the same galaxy. As part of a search
for supermassive black holes in nearby galaxy nuclei, we obtained VLT-SINFONI
observations in adaptive-optics mode of several of these galaxies.
Schwarzschild dynamical modeling enables us to disentangle the stellar orbital
structure of the different central components, and to distinguish the differing
contributions of kinematically hot (classical bulge) and kinematically cool
(pseudobulge) components in the same galaxy.Comment: LaTeX, 2 pages, 1 PDF figure. To appear in "Proceedings of IAU

A possible method for non-Hermitian and non--symmetric Hamiltonian systems
A possible method to investigate non-Hermitian Hamiltonians is suggested
through finding a Hermitian operator and defining the annihilation and
creation operators to be -pseudo-Hermitian adjoint to each other. The
operator represents the -pseudo-Hermiticity of Hamiltonians.
As an example, a non-Hermitian and non--symmetric Hamiltonian with
imaginary linear coordinate and linear momentum terms is constructed and
analyzed in detail. The operator is found, based on which, a real
spectrum and a positive-definite inner product, together with the probability
explanation of wave functions, the orthogonality of eigenstates, and the
unitarity of time evolution, are obtained for the non-Hermitian and
non--symmetric Hamiltonian. Moreover, this Hamiltonian turns out to be
coupled when it is extended to the canonical noncommutative space with
noncommutative spatial coordinate operators and noncommutative momentum
operators as well. Our method is applicable to the coupled Hamiltonian. Then
the first and second order noncommutative corrections of energy levels are
calculated, and in particular the reality of energy spectra, the
positive-definiteness of inner products, and the related properties (the
probability explanation of wave functions, the orthogonality of eigenstates,
and the unitarity of time evolution) are found not to be altered by the
noncommutativity.Comment: 15 pages, no figures; v2: clarifications added; v3: 16 pages, 1

When Is a Bulge Not a Bulge? Inner Disks Masquerading as Bulges in NGC 2787 and NGC 3945
We present a detailed morphological, photometric, and kinematic analysis of
two barred S0 galaxies with large, luminous inner disks inside their bars. We
show that these structures, in addition to being geometrically disk-like, have
exponential profiles (scale lengths 300--500 pc) distinct from the
central, non-exponential bulges. We also find them to be kinematically
disk-like. The inner disk in NGC 2787 has a luminosity roughly twice that of
the bulge; but in NGC 3945, the inner disk is almost ten times more luminous
than the bulge, which itself is extremely small (half-light radius
100 pc, in a galaxy with an outer ring of radius 14 kpc) and only
5% of the total luminosity -- a bulge/total ratio much more typical of
an Sc galaxy. We estimate that at least 20% of (barred) S0 galaxies may have
similar structures, which means that their bulge/disk ratios may be
significantly overestimated. These inner disks dominate the central light of
their galaxies; they are at least an order of magnitude larger than typical
``nuclear disks'' found in ellipticals and early-type spirals. Consequently,
they must affect the dynamics of the bars in which they reside.Comment: LaTeX, 37 pages, 14 EPS figures. To appear in The Astrophysical

Exchangeable Generative Models with Flow Scans
In this work, we develop a new approach to generative density estimation for
exchangeable, non-i.i.d. data. The proposed framework, FlowScan, combines
invertible flow transformations with a sorted scan to flexibly model the data
while preserving exchangeability. Unlike most existing methods, FlowScan
exploits the intradependencies within sets to learn both global and local
structure. FlowScan represents the first approach that is able to apply
sequential methods to exchangeable density estimation without resorting to
averaging over all possible permutations. We achieve new state-of-the-art
performance on point cloud and image set modeling
