    A modular IoT platform for real-time indoor air quality monitoring

    The impact of air quality on health and on life comfort is well established. In many societies, vulnerable elderly and young populations spend most of their time indoors. Therefore, indoor air quality monitoring (IAQM) is of great importance to human health. Engineers and researchers are increasingly focusing their efforts on the design of real-time IAQM systems using wireless sensor networks. This paper presents an end-to-end IAQM system enabling measurement of CO2, CO, SO2, NO2, O3, Cl2, ambient temperature, and relative humidity. In IAQM systems, remote users usually use a local gateway to connect wireless sensor nodes in a given monitoring site to the external world for ubiquitous access of data. In this work, the role of the gateway in processing collected air quality data and its reliable dissemination to end-users through a web-server is emphasized. A mechanism for the backup and the restoration of the collected data in the case of Internet outage is presented. The system is adapted to an open-source Internet-of-Things (IoT) web-server platform, called Emoncms, for live monitoring and long-term storage of the collected IAQM data. A modular IAQM architecture is adopted, which results in a smart scalable system that allows seamless integration of various sensing technologies, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and smart mobile standards.     New fast arctangent approximation algorithm for generic real-time embedded applications

    Fast and accurate arctangent approximations are used in several contemporary applications, including embedded systems, signal processing, radar, and power systems. Three main approximation techniques are well-established in the literature, varying in their accuracy and resource utilization levels. Those are the iterative coordinate rotational digital computer (CORDIC), the lookup tables (LUTs)-based, and the rational formulae techniques. This paper presents a novel technique that combines the advantages of both rational formulae and LUT approximation methods. The new algorithm exploits the pseudo-linear region around the tangent function zero point to estimate a reduced input arctangent through a modified rational approximation before referring this estimate to its original value using miniature LUTs. A new 2nd order rational approximation formula is introduced for the first time in this work and benchmarked against existing alternatives as it improves the new algorithm performance. The eZDSP-F28335 platform has been used for practical implementation and results validation of the proposed technique. The contributions of this work are summarized as follows: (1) introducing a new approximation algorithm with high precision and application-based flexibility; (2) introducing a new rational approximation formula that outperforms literature alternatives with the algorithm at higher accuracy requirement; and (3) presenting a practical evaluation index for rational approximations in the literature. - 2019 by the authors.     Role of T-Cell Polarization and Inflammation and Their Modulation by n-3 Fatty Acids in Gestational Diabetes and Macrosomia

    International audienceTh (T helper) cells are differentiated into either Th1 or Th2 phenotype. It is generally considered that Th1 phenotype is proinflammatory, whereas Th2 phenotype exerts anti-inflammatory or protective effects. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been associated with a decreased Th1 phenotype, whereas macrosomia is marked with high expression ofTh1 cytokines. Besides, these two pathological situations are marked with high concentrations of inflammatory mediators like tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), known to play a pivotal role in insulin resistance. Dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) may exert a beneficial effect by shifting Th1/Th2 balance to a Th2 phenotype and increasing insulin sensitivity. In this paper, we shed light on the role of T-cell malfunction that leads to an inflammatory and pathophysiological state, related to insulin resistance in GDM and macrosomia. We will also discuss the nutritional management of these pathologies by dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)

    Insights into the Middle Eastern paternal genetic pool in Tunisia: high prevalence of T-M70 haplogroup in an Arab population

    To obtain refreshed insights into the paternal lineages of Tunisian populations, Y-chromosome diversity was assessed in two populations belonging to an Arab genealogical lineage, Kairouan and Wesletia, as well as in four Tunisian Andalusian populations, Testour, Slouguia, Qalaat-El-Andalous and El Alia. The Arabs from Kairouan revealed 73.47% of E-M81 and close affinities with Berber groups, indicating they are likely arabized Berbers, clearly differentiated from the Arabs from Wesletia, who harbored the highest frequency (71.8%) of the Middle Eastern component ever observed in North Africa. In the Tunisian Andalusians, the North African component largely prevailed, followed by the Middle Eastern contribution. Global comparative analysis highlighted the heterogeneity of Tunisian populations, among which, as a whole, dominated a set of lineages ascribed to be of autochthonous Berber origin (71.67%), beside a component of essentially Middle Eastern extraction (18.35%), and signatures of Sub-Saharan (5.2%), European (3.45%) and Asiatic (1.33%) contributions. The remarkable frequency of T-M70 in Wesletia (17.4%) prompted to refine its phylogeographic analysis, allowing to confirm its Middle Eastern origin, though signs of local evolution in Northern Africa were also detected.     A smart rig for calibration of gas sensor nodes

    Electrochemical gas sensors require regular maintenance to check and secure proper functioning. Standard procedures usually involve testing and recalibration of the sensors, for which working environments are needed. Periodic calibration is therefore necessary to ensure reliable and accurate measurements. This paper proposes a dedicated smart calibration rig with a set of novel features enabling simultaneous calibration of multiple sensors. The proposed calibration rig system comprises a gas mixing system, temperature control system, a test chamber, and a process-control PC that controls all calibration phases. The calibration process is automated by a LabVIEW-based platform that controls the calibration environment for the sensor nodes, logs sensor data, and best fit equation based on interpolation for every sensor on the node and uploads it to the sensor node for next deployments. The communication between the PC and the sensor nodes is performed using the same IEEE 802.15.4 (ZigBee) protocol that the nodes also use in field deployment for air quality measurement. The results presented demonstrate the effectiveness of the sensors calibration rig.Scopu

    Comparative Study of Human and Automated Screening for Antinuclear Antibodies by Immunofluorescence on HEp-2 Cells

    Background: Several automated systems had been developed in order to reduce inter-observer variability in indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) interpretation. We aimed to evaluate the performance of a processing system in antinuclear antibodies (ANA) screening on HEp-2 cells. Patients and Methods: This study included 64 ANA-positive sera and 107 ANA-negative sera that underwent IIF on two commercial kits of HEp-2 cells (BioSystems® and Euroimmun®). IIF results were compared with a novel automated interpretation system, the “CyclopusCADImmuno®” (CAD). Results: All ANA-positive sera images were recognized as positive by CAD (sensitivity = 100%), while 17 (15.9%) of the ANA-negative sera images were interpreted as positive (specificity = 84.1%), =0.799 (SD=0.045). Comparison of IIF pattern determination between human and CAD system revealed on HEp-2 (BioSystems®), a complete concordance in 6 (9.37%) sera, a partial concordance (sharing of at least 1 pattern) in 42 (65.6%) cases and in 16 (25%) sera the pattern interpretation was discordant. Similarly, on HEp-2 (Euroimmun®) the concordance in pattern interpretation was total in 5 (7.8%) sera, partial in 39 (60.9%) and absent in 20 (31.25%). For both tested HEp-2 cells kits agreement was enhanced for the most common patterns, homogenous, fine speckled and coarse speckled. While there was an issue in identification of nucleolar, dots and nuclear membranous patterns by CAD. Conclusion: Assessment of ANA by IIF on HEp-2 cells using the automated interpretation system, the “CyclopusCADImmuno®” is a reliable method for positive/negative differentiation. Continuous integration of IIF images would improve the pattern identification by the CAD

    Copper nanowires and Graphene nano-composite based electrodes with high transparency and conductivity

    Paper presented to the 3rd Southern African Solar Energy Conference, South Africa, 11-13 May, 2015.In this paper, we present ITO-free hybrid transparent conducting electrodes that are based on bilayers of reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) and Copper Nanowires (CuNWs). The unique structural features of these in-house fabricated electrodes allowed for superior performance with an optical transmittance of 84% and sheet resistance of 21.7 Ω/sq obtained, showing their potential of becoming a replacement for ITO based electrodes. The fabricated hybrid electrodes exhibited extreme stability when subjected to various environmental and durability tests. Adoption of such high performance TCEs, will lead to simple, versatile and cost effective solutions for next generation optoelectronics industry.cf201

    Ethanolic Extract of Algerian Propolis Induced Cell Damage in Staphylococcus aureus: A Promising Alternative as a Natural Bio-Preservative in Food Products

    This study describes the antistaphylococcal mechanism of the ethanolic extract of Algerian propolis on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. To investigate the underlying mechanism of action of the ethanolic extract of propolis, bacteriolysis, bacterial death, leakage of potassium, proteins, nucleic components, and scanning electron microscopic studies were conducted. The results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ethanolic extract of propolis against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 was 39 μg ml–1. The extract displayed significant bactericid activity against S. aureus in a time and concentration dependant manner. Its mode of action was evident from the increase of K+ efflux and nucleotide leakage. These results were confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) that showed remarkable morphological and ultrastructural changes in S. aureus after exposure to 1MIC and 2MIC concentrations. The overall study contributed to the understanding of the antistaphylococcal mechanism of ethanolic extract of propolis. It emphasizes its potential to be used as an important natural bio-preservatives in food products

    Brugada syndrome and fever: genetic and molecular characterization of patients carrying SCN5A mutations.

    OBJECTIVE: Brugada syndrome (BrS) is characterized by ventricular tachyarrhythmias leading to sudden cardiac death and is caused, in part, by mutations in the SCN5A gene encoding the sodium channel Na(v)1.5. Fever can trigger or exacerbate the clinical manifestations of BrS. The aim of this work was to characterize the genetic and molecular determinants of fever-dependent BrS. METHODS: Four male patients with typical BrS ST-segment elevation in V1-V3 or ventricular arrhythmias during fever were screened for mutations in the SCN5A gene. Wild-type (WT) and mutant Na(v)1.5 channels were expressed in HEK293 cells. The sodium currents (I(Na)) were analysed using the whole-cell patch clamp technique at various temperatures. Protein expression of WT and mutant channels was studied by Western blot experiments. RESULTS: Two mutations in SCN5A, L325R and R535X, were identified. Expression of the two mutant Na(v)1.5 channels in HEK293 cells revealed in each case a severe loss-of-function. Upon the increase of temperature up to 42 degrees C, we observed a pronounced acceleration of Na(v)1.5 activation and fast inactivation kinetics. Cardiac action potential modelling experiments suggest that in patients with reduced I(Na), fever could prematurely shorten the action potential by virtue of its effect on WT channels. Further experiments revealed that L325R channels are likely misfolded, since their function could be partially rescued by mexiletine or curcumin. In co-expression experiments, L325R channels interfered with the proper function of WT channels, suggesting that a dominant negative phenomenon may underlie BrS triggered by fever. CONCLUSIONS: The genetic background of BrS patients sensitive to fever is heterogeneous.     Preliminary results of the project A.I.D.A. (Auto Immunity: Diagnosis Assisted by computer)

    In this paper, are presented the preliminary results of the A.I.D.A. (Auto Immunity: Diagnosis Assisted by computer) project which is developed in the frame of the cross-border cooperation Italy-Tunisia. According to the main objectives of this project, a database of interpreted Indirect ImmunoFluorescence (IIF) images on HEp 2 cells is being collected thanks to the contribution of Italian and Tunisian experts involved in routine diagnosis of autoimmune diseases. Through exchanging images and double reporting; a Gold Standard database, containing around 1000 double reported IIF images with different patterns including negative tests, has been settled. This Gold Standard database has been used for optimization of a computing solution (CADComputer Aided Detection) and for assessment of its added value in order to be used along with an immunologist as a second reader in detection of auto antibodies for autoimmune disease diagnosis. From the preliminary results obtained, the CAD appeared more powerful than junior immunologists used as second readers and may significantly improve their efficacy
