Learner Autonomy in Distance Learning under the Circumstance of Corona virus: Challenges and Opportunities

    No full text
After the spread of Corona virus, the Algerian government like many other countries has closed its universities. This crisis has led the ministry of higher education and scientific research to adopt online-courses. Formal learning has, most of the time, been associated to inside classroom practices and activities; however, little attention is given to learning outside the classroom in the absence of the teacher. Thus, this paper attempts to explore the effectiveness of distance learning as an alternative option to cope with this unprecedented situation and to develop learner autonomy. Two questionnaires were administered to 22 teachers and 72 students at Ahmed Zabana University of Relizane-Algeria- via email and Facebook. The respondents of this research include 10 teachers and 38 EFL students. Results have shown that though distance learning is an appreciated method to make students experience autonomy during this time, it is still difficult and challenging due to students’ psychological instability, teachers’ lack of online teaching experience and bad network quality

Representation of the Moroccan Ruler, Tribe and Resistance in Travel Writing: A Postcolonial Study of Morocco That Was and In Morocco

    No full text
Colonial travel writing performed ideological functions in North Africa during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The images, stories, and narratives composing its representation- created a distorted reality of the colonized lands to normalize and legitimize colonialism. This study contributes to offering a more literary account of how colonial writings about Morocco targeted social and political institutions or organizations as part of its imperial project in the region. To this end, this study examines two travel accounts (Morocco That Was and In Morocco) to identify how they represent the Moroccan ruler, tribe, and resistance during the colonial period. Based on postcolonial and critical discourse analysis perspectives, the findings of this research showed that representation of these aspects of Moroccan life during that period endorsed the colonial and imperial project in Morocco. In the meantime, the study recommended the integration of this colonial discourse earlier in Moroccan textbooks

Moroccan High School Students’ Perceptions of a Good Teacher

Teachers usually take for granted that only their perceived pedagogical agendas are likely to bring about the positive outcomes they look for. However, as it has been confirmed by many studies, their effectiveness and success in their careers are highly determined by the way they are perceived by their students. This exploratory study outlines the major views Moroccan high school students hold towards a good teacher. The study was carried out through a questionnaire that was administered to 100 Moroccan high school students using convenience sampling. The obtained data were analyzed with the help of the statistical package for social sciences. The findings of this research indicated that most Moroccan high school students prioritize the affective side while they evaluate their teachers. There were also other features that evolved throughout the study

Hydrogeology of a Complex Aquifer System in Semi-Arid Mountainous Region: The Eastern Upper Guir Basin in the High Atlas (Morocco)

International audienceThe eastern part of Morocco, surrounded by the High Atlas chain close to Errachidia, represents a very sensitive area in a semi-arid context. Average annual rainfall does not exceed 300 mm/year. Most of the regional water resources are linked to the aquifer systems in the Atlas area. The study site coincides with the Eastern Upper Guir Basin, one of the main rivers in Eastern Morocco. This basin is located close to the eastern border of the Moroccan High Atlas. The geology of the basin consists mainly of Jurassic and Cretaceous formations. The structure of the basin is strongly affected by the Atlasian tectonics. This results in successive large synclines separated by major WE faults. The hydrogeological system of the basin is accordingly constituted by sub-basins associated with each syncline and separated by faulted anticlines, whose overlapping faults act as semi-impermeable barriers. This compartmentalization causes the very complex functioning of the whole system. The study undertaken, based on structural, meteorological, hydrogeological, hydrochemical and isotopic data, allowed us to advance significantly in the understanding of this system. The compartments behave as hydrogeological sub-units but remain interdependent on each other. The recharge of the aquifer system is essentially associated with the rains and snowfalls at high altitudes. This is consistent with the stable isotope results. Important development projects are planned in this region, associated with a drastic increase in water demands. Groundwater suitability was assessed using the WHO standards for drinking purposes and the SAR (sodium adsorption ratio) for irrigation. Complementary investigations should be considered to further the results presented here and move towards a quantitative assessment and management of the water resources
