    Effect of periodic backwash in the submerged membrane adsorption hybrid system

    The submerged membrane adsorption hybrid system (SMAHS) is an attractive solution in treating wastewater; however it faces membrane fouling although to a less extent. In this study, different adsorbents and resins were investigated in order to find a substitute to the powdered activated carbon (PAC); The effect of new backflush was also studied in further reducing the membrane fouling. The SMAHS led to 72–86% dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal. A detailed study on the transmembrane pressure development led to a conclusion that there is a critical flux and this value is around 16 l/h.m2 for the wastewater studied

    Lors de la filtration sur fibres creuses de suspensions de bentonite, il a été mis en évidence que le facteur limitant est la formation d'un dépôt à la surface de la fibre.Parlant de ces considérations, un dispositif optique a été mis au point pour suivre l'évolution spatio-temporelle du dépôt en cours de filtration sur fibre creuse à peau externe.Ainsi, il a pu être mis en évidence que l'influence de la vitesse d'écoulement n'est sensible qu'après un certain temps de filtration ou un certain volume filtré.Dans le domaine testé des faibles vitesses d'écoulement, il existe une période initiale où la loi de filtration sur gâteau est applicable.Dans le cas de fibres creuses à peau externe, l'optimum technique (productivité maximale) ou économique (coût minimal du m3 traité) serait donc plus à rechercher dans une optimisation de la séquence filtration-lavage que dans une augmentation de la vitesse d'écoulement.L'efficacité du réentraînement du dépôt lors du lavage peut être suivie grâce à l'équipement et au capteur développés.Use of membranes (MF or UF) for water treatment is now developed at an industrial scale. This approach is considered as a good solution to deal with the periodic strong increases in suspended solids contents which occur in karstic aquifers.Under these conditions, the main contribution to the growth of hydraulic resistance is related to the formation of a deposit on the membrane surface.Thus, an experimental study was performed at the laboratory scale in order to perform on line characterization of deposit formation during the filtration of a bentonite suspension through a hollow fiber.The filtration module is transparent and contains only one hollow fiber with its external skin.An optical device formerly developed was used as a sensor : a horizontal laser beam is focussed at the surface of the hollow fiber which is held perpendicular to the beam and can be moved step by step in the micrometric range.Experiments were performed with a bentonite suspension (concentration 0.375 kg/m3) and under different operating conditions :- dead end filtration and crossflow filtration with velocities up to 0,30 m/s in the annular space (which means Re ≈ 2000, velocity gradient ≈ 1000 S-1, shear stress ≈ 1 Pa) ;-transmembrane pressure between 85 and 185 Kpa.One of the main conclusions of this study is that influence of the velocity appears only after an initial period during which the growth of the deposit and the filtrate flowrate variation with time are in agreement with the equations of dead end filtration at constant pressure.Thus a combination of dead end filtration and periodic backwash for removing the deposit might be the best solution for getting the highest productivity with minimal energy consumption.These optimal conditions may be simulated using the equations of dead end filtration at constant pressure and making the assumption that the backwashing is fully efficicent.The experimental study of backwashing, using the optical sensor for measuring the diameter of the fiber after each backwashing, proves that this assumption is correct and that it is possible to get a steady mean filtrate flux by periodic backwashing.From the theoretical study, the optimal duration of the filtration period is rather short (about 10 minutes) but the decline after the maximum is very malt, which means that the fiitration period may be longer without significative variation of the productivity.Thus the method presented here is able, if applied to actual raw water, to give technical and economical elements of comparison between dead end filtration with periodic backwashing and crossflow filtration

    Is semi-flocculation effective as pretreatment to ultrafiltration in wastewater treatment?

    In this study, ferric chloride (FeCl3) flocculation was used as a pretreatment to ultrafiltration (UF) in treating synthetic wastewater containing synthetic organic matter (SOM). The effect of flocculant dose was studied in terms of organic removal and membrane flux decline. The UF with optimum dose of FeCl3 (68 mg L-1) did not experience any flux decline during the whole operation of 6 h. The preflocculation with a smaller dose of 20 mg L-1 of FeCl3 led to a severe flux decline in the UF (more than 65% in 6 h). To understand the phenomenon of the flux decline of UF, the MW ranges of SOM removed by different doses of FeCl 3 and by the post treatment of UF were studied. Flocculation with at least 50 mg L-1 of FeCl3 dose was found to be necessary to avoid any significant flux decline and to obtain superior DOC removal. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    A comparative study of techniques used for porous membrane characterization: pore characterization

    A range of commerical UF membranes have been characterized by thermoporometry, biliquid permporometry and molecular weight cut-off experiments. A comparison of results from these three independent techniques for the same types of membrane shows an indication of the strength and weakness of the methods. MWCO values determined from actual rejection values using PEG and dextran were significantly lower than the manufacturer supplied data. The data obtained using the biliquid permporometry and solute rejection tests produced contrasting results for Amicon polysulfone (PM30) and regenerated cellulose (YM30) membranes. While MWCO determination resulted in sharper cut-off curves, the biliquid permporometry offered a broader size distribution with the PM30 and vice versa with the YM30. The pore sizes obtained by thermoporometry were significantly larger than those by the biliquid permporometry. The biliquid permporometry and thermoporometry give significantly higher values than the MWCO method. The closest comparison is obtained between the EM values and the MWCO method. This suggests that the controlling pore dimension for separation is the surface skin dimension

    Comparison of capillary flow porometry (CFP) and liquid extrusion porometry (LEP) techniques for the characterization of porous and face mask membranes

    Producción CientíficaThis work aims to study the characterization of several membrane filters by using capillary flow porometry (CFP) and liquid extrusion porometry (LEP) to obtain their pore size distributions (PSD) and mean pore diameters (davg). Three polymeric membranes of di erent materials namely, polyethylene (PET), cellulose nitrate (CN), and FM (face mask), and one inorganic (namely, alumina Al2O3) from ultrafiltration (UF)/microfiltration (MF) and particle separation were analyzed using a pressure constant fluid/liquid extrusion porometer, developed at institute de la filtration et techniques séparatives (IFTS). Several porosimetric fluids have been used to wet and penetrate into the porous/fiber structure. The results show the accuracy of the setup on characterizing membranes in the UF/MF range by CFP, with reasonable agreement with nominal data of the filters. Additionally, LEP extension of the equipment obtained good agreement with nominal data and the CFP results, while filters presenting a microstructure of highly interconnected pores (face mask) resulted in clear di erences in terms of resulting PSD and average sizes when CFP and LEP results are compared.Ministerio de Educación Superior, Investigación e Innovación francés - (Proyecto CIR-IFTS-2020

    Influence of bioreaction on a long-term operation of a submerged membrane adsorption hybrid system

    This study investigates the long-term performance of a submerged membrane adsorption hybrid system (SMAHS) for organic matter removal from synthetic wastewater representing biologically treated wastewater by using a low dose of powdered activated carbon (PAC). A simple periodic backwash system is used to de-clog the hollow fiber membrane. In this reactor, bioreaction takes place due to the growth of the biomass in the system. This hybrid system was able to remove effectively the small- and large-molecular weight organic matters from 270 to 36,270 Da. The effect of PAC replacement in the reactor was also studied and it was shown that PAC replacement could enhance both biological activity and adsorption. With PAC replacement of 2.5%(total amount) per day, the total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency was 10% higher than without PAC replacement. In another long-term experiment, the TOC removal efficiency was maintained over 85% even after 55-day operation (with PAC replacement rate of 2.5%(total amount) every two days). © 2006

    Les eaux naturelles comme les effluents secondaires produits par les stations d’épuration contiennent des matières organiques qui constituent actuellement l’une des cibles prioritaires des filières de production d’eau potable ou de réutilisation des eaux usées. Les membranes de Microfiltration et d’Ultrafiltration ne retiennent que très partiellement ces composés organiques de faible masse moléculaire qui sont par ailleurs responsables de phénomènes importants de colmatage. Un réacteur à membranes immergées analogue dans son principe aux bio réacteurs à membrane semble constituer un outil adapté pour réaliser simultanément dans le même équipement la réaction physico-chimique et la séparation membranaire.     International initiative for a curated SDHB variant database improving the diagnosis of hereditary paraganglioma and pheochromocytoma

Identifying pathogenic SDHB variants in patients with PPGL is essential to the management of patients and relatives due to the increased risk of recurrences, metastases and the emergence of non-PPGL tumours. In this context, the ‘NGS and PPGL (NGSnPPGL) Study Group’ initiated an international effort to collect, annotate and classify SDHB variants and to provide an accurate, expert-curated and freely available SDHB variant database. Methods A total of 223 distinct SDHB variants from 737 patients were collected worldwide. Using multiple criteria, each variant was first classified according to a 5-tier grouping based on American College of Medical Genetics and NGSnPPGL standardised recommendations and was then manually reviewed by a panel of experts in the field. Results This multistep process resulted in 23 benign/likely benign, 149 pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants and 51 variants of unknown significance (VUS). Expert curation reduced by half the number of variants initially classified as VUS. Variant classifications are publicly accessible via the Leiden Open Variation Database system (https://databases.lovd.nl/shared/genes/SDHB). Conclusion This international initiative by a panel of experts allowed us to establish a consensus classification for 223 SDHB variants that should be used as a routine tool by geneticists in charge of PPGL laboratory diagnosis. This accurate classification of SDHB genetic variants will help to clarify the diagnosis of hereditary PPGL and to improve the clinical care of patients and relatives with PPGL.This work was supported in part by a salary grant to NB from Cancer Research for PErsonalized Medicine (CARPEM).
