    Novel cavity-induced switching between Bell-state textures in a quantum dot

    Nanoscale quantum dots in microwave cavities can be used as a laboratory for exploring electron-electron interactions and their spin in the presence of quantized light and a magnetic field. We show how a simple theoretical model of this interplay at resonance predicts complex but measurable effects. New polariton states emerge that combine spin, relative modes, and radiation. These states have intricate spin-space correlations and undergo polariton transitions controlled by the microwave cavity field. We uncover novel topological effects involving highly correlated spin and charge density, that display singlet-triplet and inhomogeneous Bell-state distributions. Signatures of these transitions are imprinted in the photon distribution, which will allow for optical read out protocols in future experiments and nanoscale quantum technologies.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, supplementary material is located after the bibliograph

    Gestión pública y políticas alimentarias en el Perú

    En primer lugar, Brinda un panorama de la pobreza y de las políticas sociales en el Perú a partir de algunos indicadores básicos que nos permiten ubicar la situación del país en el contexto latinoamericano. Igualmente, son examinadas las principales tendencias de la cooperación internacional, así como el redireccionamiento que están experimentando los flujos de ayuda en el mundo. En segundo lugar, se concentra en definir los principales componentes conceptuales de la cuestión alimentaria, así como también la situación nutricional del país y el marco institucional en el cual opera la intervención estatal. En tercer lugar, se hace una revisión de las teorías más importantes acerca de la lógica que existe en el proceso de formulación e implementación de políticas. Aun cuando se trata de literatura académica concebida para burocracias de países desarrollados, los elementos conceptuales que se desarrollan proporcionan algunas pistas que ayudan a comprender y visualizar mejor las limitaciones e incongruencias que existen en las instituciones públicas peruanas. En cuarto lugar, busca reconstruir cómo funciona la burocracia estatal peruana a partir del análisis del PRONAA y de una “Nueva administración” que, durante parte importante del año 1996, quiso introducir cambios en la misión institucional de este organismo estatal. Al examinar la forma cómo se organizó el proceso de formulación de políticas, cuáles fueron las principales características de la gestión de los programas, el tipo de recursos humanos con los que se contó, los limitados niveles de coordinación, supervisión y evaluación desarrollados, y la relación mantenida con los beneficiarios, la cooperación internacional y las Organizaciones No Gubernamentales, se entenderán mejor las razones que condujeron a su fracaso. Finalmente, intenta llevar a cabo una evaluación del proceso de focalización de la ayuda que se dirige a los comedores populares, así como una evaluación de impacto de un programa específico de la institución cuyo principal objetivo es garantizar el aumento de la seguridad alimentaria de los beneficiarios

    Third-order nonlinear optical response and photoluminescence characterization of tellurite glasses with different alkali metal oxides as network modifiers

    Studies of the third-order nonlinear optical properties in TeO(2)-MO-R(2)O glasses with three different alkali metal oxides R(2)O (R - Li, Na, K) as network modifiers and two network intermediates MO (M - Zn, Mg) are reported. The influence of such modifiers and intermediates on the nonlinear optical properties of these glasses was investigated using the standard Z-scan and the thermally managed Z-scan techniques under femtosecond pulse excitation at 800 nm. For different modifiers and intermediates, the nonlinear refraction indices n(2) of these glasses varied in the range 1.31-2.81 (x10(-15) cm(2)/W). It was found that n(2) increases as the ionic radius of both network modifiers and intermediates decreases. Furthermore, the measurements show that the contribution from thermo-optical effects to the nonlinear refraction index is negligible for all of the studied glass compositions. In addition, the effect of modifiers and intermediates in the formation of localized states in the vicinity of the optical bandgap was also studied through photoluminescence experiments. These experiments revealed the presence of two emission bands (red and blue) originating from these localized states that can be populated after optical excitation and subsequent relaxation

    Organotypic 3D Cell-Architecture Impacts the Expression Pattern of miRNAs–mRNAs Network in Breast Cancer SKBR3 Cells

    Background. Currently, most of the research on breast cancer has been carried out in conventional two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures due to its practical benefits, however, the three-dimensional (3D) cell culture is becoming the model of choice in cancer research because it allows cell–cell and cell–extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions, mimicking the native microenvironment of tumors in vivo. Methods. In this work, we evaluated the effect of 3D cell organization on the expression pattern of miRNAs (by Small-RNAseq) and mRNAs (by microarrays) in the breast cancer SKBR3 cell line and analyzed the biological processes and signaling pathways regulated by the differentially expressed protein-coding genes (DE-mRNAs) and miRNAs (DE-microRNAs) found in the organoids. Results. We obtained well-defined cell-aggregated organoids with a grape cluster-like morphology with a size up to 9.2 × 105 μm3. The transcriptomic assays showed that cell growth in organoids significantly affected (all p < 0.01) the gene expression patterns of both miRNAs, and mRNAs, finding 20 upregulated and 19 downregulated DE-microRNAs, as well as 49 upregulated and 123 downregulated DE-mRNAs. In silico analysis showed that a subset of 11 upregulated DE-microRNAs target 70 downregulated DE-mRNAs. These genes are involved in 150 gene ontology (GO) biological processes such as regulation of cell morphogenesis, regulation of cell shape, regulation of canonical Wnt signaling pathway, morphogenesis of epithelium, regulation of cytoskeleton organization, as well as in the MAPK and AGE–RAGE signaling KEGG-pathways. Interestingly, hsa-mir-122-5p (Fold Change (FC) = 15.4), hsa-mir-369-3p (FC = 11.4), and hsa-mir-10b-5p (FC = 20.1) regulated up to 81% of the 70 downregulated DE-mRNAs. Conclusion. The organotypic 3D cell-organization architecture of breast cancer SKBR3 cells impacts the expression pattern of the miRNAs–mRNAs network mainly through overexpression of hsa-mir-122-5p, hsa-mir-369-3p, and hsa-mir-10b-5p. All these findings suggest that the interaction between cell–cell and cell–ECM as well as the change in the culture architecture impacts gene expression, and, therefore, support the pertinence of migrating breast cancer research from conventional cultures to 3D models

    Genomic transformation and social organization during the Copper Age-Bronze Age transition in southern Iberia

    The emerging Bronze Age (BA) of southeastern Iberia saw marked social changes. Late Copper Age (CA) settlements were abandoned in favor of hilltop sites, and collective graves were largely replaced by single or double burials with often distinctive grave goods indirectly reflecting a hierarchical social organization, as exemplified by the BA El Argar group. We explored this transition from a genomic viewpoint by tripling the amount of data available for this period. Concomitant with the rise of El Argar starting ∼2200 cal BCE, we observe a complete turnover of Y-chromosome lineages along with the arrival of steppe-related ancestry. This pattern is consistent with a founder effect in male lineages, supported by our finding that males shared more relatives at sites than females.     Effectiveness and Safety of the Sequential Use of a Second and Third Anti-TNF Agent in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Results from the Eneida Registry

    Background: The effectiveness of the switch to another anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) agent is not known. The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness and safety of treatment with a second and third anti-TNF drug after intolerance to or failure of a previous anti-TNF agent in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Methods: We included patients diagnosed with IBD from the ENEIDA registry who received another anti-TNF after intolerance to or failure of a prior anti-TNF agent. Results: A total of 1122 patients were included. In the short term, remission was achieved in 55% of the patients with the second anti-TNF. The incidence of loss of response was 19% per patient-year with the second anti-TNF. Combination therapy (hazard ratio [HR], 2.4; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.8-3; P < 0.0001) and ulcerative colitis vs Crohn''s disease (HR, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.1-2.1; P = 0.005) were associated with a higher probability of loss of response. Fifteen percent of the patients had adverse events, and 10% had to discontinue the second anti-TNF. Of the 71 patients who received a third anti-TNF, 55% achieved remission. The incidence of loss of response was 22% per patient-year with a third anti-TNF. Adverse events occurred in 7 patients (11%), but only 1 stopped the drug. Conclusions: Approximately half of the patients who received a second anti-TNF achieved remission; nevertheless, a significant proportion of them subsequently lost response. Combination therapy and type of IBD were associated with loss of response. Remission was achieved in almost 50% of patients who received a third anti-TNF; nevertheless, a significant proportion of them subsequently lost response

    The integration of Transversal Competences in Higher Education in Engineering through e-learning tools. The case of the ETSII at the UPV

    [EN] One of the objectives of Higher Education, increasingly demanded by the labor market, is to guarantee the development of professional, social and ethical skills of students. Making the learning of these type of transversal competences (TC) compatible with the specific competences of the degree in the time frame of the studies, is not an easy task in particular of some of these competences, in engineering profile degrees. For this reason, at the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering (ETSII) of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) it has been designed an e-learning platform by the teaching staff, students and employers, coordinated by the SubDirectorate of Educational Innovation and within the framework of a Project of Innovation and Educational Improvement of the UPV,. This platform allows students to train in TC at their own pace according to their needs and teachers to use methodologies appropriate to their subjects and domain level adapted to the engineering framework. In this way, the platform can be used as a vertical coordination axis between subjects, for the development of TC at the different levels of mastery throughout the ETSII students' studies.[ES] Uno de los objetivos de la Educación Superior cada vez más demandado por el mercado laboral es garantizar el desarrollo de habilidades profesionales, sociales y éticas del alumnado. Compatibilizar el aprendizaje de este tipo de competencias de carácter transversal (CT) con las competencias específicas propias de la titulación en el marco temporal de los estudios, no es tarea sencilla especialmente para algunas de estas competencias y en titulaciones de perfil ingenieril. Por este motivo, en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial (ETSII) de la Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) se ha diseñado una plataforma e-learning por parte del profesorado, estudiantes y empleadores, coordinados por la Subdirección de Innovación Educativa y en el marco de diferentes Proyectos de Innovación y Mejora Educativa de la UPV, Esta plataforma permite al estudiantado formarse en CT de manera autónoma según sus necesidades, y al profesorado recurrir a metodologías adecuadas a sus asignaturas y nivel de dominio adaptadas al ámbito ingenieril.
