Many time scales in a single GRB

    Get PDF
In some Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) it has been possible to identify different time scales of variability. Certainly such a behaviour can easily be revealed in strong events, but it might represent a general behaviour of the GRBs. In this paper we report results of temporal variability for 5 events, 2 recorded by the previous experiments SIGNE and KONUS and 3 by the experiment BATSE on board the CGRO satellite. This kind of analysis up to date can give new information to understand the origin of GRBs and the relative scenario of the burst energy emission

Evidence for a long duration component in the prompt emission of short Gamma-Ray Bursts detected with BeppoSAX

A statistical study on the light curves of all the short Gamma-Ray Bursts detected with the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GRBM) aboard BeppoSAX is reported. Evidence for a very weak and long duration component associated with these events in the two 1 s counters of the GRBM (40-700 keV and >100 keV) is found. It starts a few tens of seconds before the burst and continues for about 30 s after the burst. The overall hardness of this component is comparable with that of the event itself. The detection of a signal before the onset time and the similar hardness are consistent with an interpretation of the long duration component in terms of prompt emission associated with short GRBs.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Indonesia is not an Islamic State is a documentary about the work of Jason Iskandar, where the documentary film making occurred inadvertently caused by the Director\u27s own bad experience. The documentary, Indonesia is not an Islamic State tells the story of two muslim student who attended private catholic school in Jakarta, where they see based on their respective points of view that Indonesia is getting increasingly mixed into an Islamic State, and is assosiated with events that occurred on June 1, 2008 about the storming of FPI (Islamic Defenders Front) against AKKBB (National Alliance for freedom of religion and Believe). This research is a descriptive study of qualitative approach to the analysis of the semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce. The objec of his research is the impressions documentary film Indonesia is not an Islamic State which lasted 9 minutes 32 second which have been published in 2009. The results obatained from the analysis of the top film Indonesia is not an Islamic State is the meaning of the signs contained in the selected 7 frame are talkinh about religious values. From the data obtained by use of the analysis the author signs contained in the movie by semiotics theory Charles Sanders Peirce. The analysis is done through two stages, namely the significance of picture/ frame then the results will be used as the material for the next stage of analysis i.e intrepretation contextually. Construction of taht menaing-laden will appear in the form of pictures an footage of the scene is also a narrative speaker which is considered to represent the intent of film\u27s director, Jason Iskandar. Religious values taht appear in the film include recognition of the personal rightts of each human being as the basis for understanding cross-cultural diffrerences, religious beliefs and social development, the concept of community-based “Agree in Disagreement”. Electron cloud buildup and impedance effects on beam dynamics in the future circular e+e− collider and experimental characterization of thin TiZrV vacuum chamber coatings

The Future Circular Collider FCC-ee is a study toward a high luminosity electron-positron collider with a centre-of-mass energy from 91 GeV to 365 GeV. Due to the beam parameters and pipe dimensions, collective effects and electron cloud can be very critical aspects for the machine and can represent the main limitations to its performance. An estimation of the electron cloud build up in the main machine components and an impedance model are required to analyze the induced instabilities and to find solutions for their mitigation. Special attention has been given to the resistive wall impedance associated with a layer of nonevaporable getter (NEG) coating on the vacuum chamber required for electron cloud mitigation. The studies presented in this paper will show that minimizing the thickness of this coating layer is mandatory to increase the single bunch instability thresholds in the proposed lepton collider at 45.6 GeV. For this reason, NEG thin films with thicknesses below 250 nm have been investigated by means of numerical simulations to minimize the resistive wall impedance. In parallel, an extensive measurement campaign was performed at CERN to characterize these thin films, with the purpose of finding the minimum effective thickness satisfying vacuum and electron cloud requirements

Resolved Multi-element Stellar Chemical Abundances in the Brightest Quiescent Galaxy at z ∼ 2

Measuring the chemical composition of galaxies is crucial to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution models. However, such measurements are extremely challenging for quiescent galaxies at high redshifts, which have faint stellar continua and compact sizes, making it difficult to detect absorption lines and nearly impossible to spatially resolve them. Gravitational lensing offers the opportunity to study these galaxies with detailed spectroscopy that can be spatially resolved. In this work, we analyze deep spectra of MRG-M0138, a lensed quiescent galaxy at z = 1.98, which is the brightest of its kind, with an H-band magnitude of 17.1. Taking advantage of full spectral fitting, we measure [Mg/Fe] = 0.51 ± 0.05, [Fe/H] = 0.26 ± 0.04, and, for the first time, the stellar abundances of six other elements in this galaxy. We further constrained, also for the first time in a z ~ 2 galaxy, radial gradients in stellar age, [Fe/H], and [Mg/Fe]. We detect no gradient in age or [Mg/Fe] and a slightly negative gradient in [Fe/H], which has a slope comparable to that seen in local early-type galaxies. Our measurements show that not only is MRG-M0138 very Mg-enhanced compared to the centers of local massive early-type galaxies, it is also very iron rich. These dissimilar abundances suggest that even the inner regions of massive galaxies have experienced significant mixing of stars in mergers, in contrast to a purely inside-out growth model. The abundance pattern observed in MRG-M0138 challenges simple galactic chemical evolution models that vary only the star formation timescale and shows the need for more elaborate models

A search for double electron capture (2ε2\varepsilon), electron capture with positron emission (εβ+\varepsilon\beta^+), and double positron emission 2β+2\beta^+) in 136^{136}Ce and 138^{138}Ce was realized with a 465 cm3^3 ultra-low background HP Ge γ\gamma spectrometer over 2299 h at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. A 627 g sample of cerium oxide deeply purified by liquid-liquid extraction method was used as a source of γ\gamma quanta expected in double β\beta decay of the cerium isotopes. New improved half-life limits were set on different modes and channels of double β\beta decay of 136^{136}Ce and 138^{138}Ce at the level of T1/2>10171018T_{1/2}>10^{17}-10^{18} yr.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

The Tunisian traditional rabbit breeding system versus the commercial system: an epidemiological perspective

[EN] Rabbit breeding is practiced in many hot climate countries and contributes in terms of agricultural activities to rural development. In Tunisia two different rabbit breeding systems can be identified - the "traditional" (an integrated free range and underground system) and the "commercial" (employing sheds and wire net cages) practice. 24 Tunisian rabbitries (10 traditional and 14 commercial) were included in an epidemiological study aimed at comparing the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria responsible for upper respiratory and digestive diseases in the two breeding systems. A total of 128 adult rabbits (mean age of 9.4 months) were tested using deep nasal and rectal swabs. Symptoms of nasal discharge and/or diarrhea were recorded. 281 bacterial strains were isolated in total, 138 in commercial and 143 in traditional farms. The bacteria most frequently isolated (61.2%) were Gram-positive strains, which included Streptococcus sp. (22.8%), coagulase negative Staphylococcus sp. (17.8%) and coagulase-positive Staphylococcus (17.4%) strains. Among the Gram-negative isolated bacteria, Escherichia coli was the most frequent (12.5%), followed by Proteus sp. (5.7%). The two Salmonella strains isolated were Salmonella bongori (found in the commercial system), and Salmonella typhimurium definitive phage-type (DT) 104 (found in the traditional farming system). The absence of Pasteurella multocida in the list of isolated bacteria may be directly correlated to the method of conserving the samples (storage at freezing temperature). The coagulase-positive Staphylococcus strains were frequently isolated (73.5%) from healthy rabbits, but seldom from rabbits with rhinitis (18.4%) or diarrhea (8.2%). Staphylococcus aureus strains were recovered at a higher rate in commercial farms (21%) in comparison with traditional (11.9%) farms. However, this difference was not statistically significant. Four Staphylococcus aureus strains, all belonging to commercial farms, proved positive when tested for enterotoxin production. The antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated Staphylococcus aureus strains was also investigated. Most of the antibiotics tested were very effective: the highest level of susceptibility was observed with enrofloxacin (100%). The low performance of Tunisian traditional rabbit rearing has been linked to the high mortality rate, which may possibly be due to the increased presence of pathogens at the rabbit flock level. However, this was not confirmed by the results of our study due to the fact that the bacterial contamination seems to be comparable in both the traditional and the commercial breeding systems.Belli, P.; Fontana, E.; Sommariva, M.; Scarpelli, L.; Ricci, C.; Luzi, F.; Haddad, B.
