Nomenclatural and taxonomic changes, new distribution and biological records for jewel beetles (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)

Replacement names, nomenclatural, distributional and biological notes are presented for 21 species of Buprestidae (Coleoptera). Agrilodes strandi ssp. meranus Obenberger, 1942, and Polybothris (Amphisbeta) uitalisi var. stygia, Obenberger, 1942, are proposed to allow the subspecies or variety names define the species, respectively, with strandi and uitalisi remaining in synonymy as nomina nuda. Acmaeodera ruficaudis macfadyeni is proposed as a new replacement name for Acmaeodera ruficaudis pinguis Holm, 1985, preoccupied by A. pinguis Fairmaire, 1902; Buprestis aenescens Wiedemann, 1823 is synonymized under Buprestis albomarginata Herbst, 1801; Buprestis planus Fabricius, 1798 is transferred to Dismorpha Gistel, 1848; Damarsila conturbata Thomson, 1879 is removed from synonymy under Buprestis amaurotica Klug, 1855 and reinstated as a valid species; Damarsila obsti Cobos, 1957 is rejected as an unnecessary replacement name for Psilopotera ornata Obst, 1903; Dicerca reticulatoides is proposed as a new replacement name for D. reticulata Assmann, 1870, a fossil taxon, preoccupied by Buprestis reticulata Fabricius, 1794, a junior subjective synonym of Dicerca aenea (Linne, 1758); Kamosia luciae Obenberger, 1935, is synonymized under Kamosiella dennestoides (Thomson, 1878); Melobasis nouaeguinae is proposed as a new replacement name for Melobasis papuana Obenberger, 1938, preoccupied by M. (Briseis) papuana Obenberger, 1924; Sjoestedtius diuinus Obenberger, 1935, is transferred to Malawiella Bellamy, 1990, and Sjoestedtius atahorensis Descarpentries, 1952 is proposed as its new subjective synonym. Buprestis albomarginata Herbst, Damarsila contubata Thomson, and Psiloptera ornata Obst are transferred to Lampetis Dejean, 1833. Visual analytics for supply network management: system design and evaluation

We propose a visual analytic system to augment and enhance decision-making processes of supply chain managers. Several design requirements drive the development of our integrated architecture and lead to three primary capabilities of our system prototype. First, a visual analytic system must integrate various relevant views and perspectives that highlight different structural aspects of a supply network. Second, the system must deliver required information on-demand and update the visual representation via user-initiated interactions. Third, the system must provide both descriptive and predictive analytic functions for managers to gain contingency intelligence. Based on these capabilities we implement an interactive web-based visual analytic system. Our system enables managers to interactively apply visual encodings based on different node and edge attributes to facilitate mental map matching between abstract attributes and visual elements. Grounded in cognitive fit theory, we demonstrate that an interactive visual system that dynamically adjusts visual representations to the decision environment can significantly enhance decision-making processes in a supply network setting. We conduct multi-stage evaluation sessions with prototypical users that collectively confirm the value of our system. Our results indicate a positive reaction to our system. Changes in higher education and valuing the job: The views of accounting academics in Australia

In a previous article (Bellamy et al., 2003), the authors reported on survey research that investigated reasons why academics from business disciplines enter and remain in academia, and the conditions they deem necessary to creating ideal work satisfaction. For both entering and remaining, as well as in achieving ideal work satisfaction, the most important factors were found to be autonomy and flexibility, with teaching and research the next most important factors. In a subsequent analysis of the data, reported in this article, the authors identify and explore significant differences between accounting academics and other business academics in the relative importance placed on these key factors. The findings may be used to inform policy makers and university administrators of the importance of discipline differences when identifying key factors for recruitment and retention of accounting academics specifically, and business academics generally

Comparing Substance Use Social Issues in Appalachian and non-Appalachian Regions in Kentucky

Substance use and abuse is not a uniquely Appalachian problem, but it remains a prevalent social problem for the geographical region. Kentucky has been one of the central states experiencing generations of substance abuse, ranging from methamphetamines to OxyContin to heroin. Eastern Kentucky, which includes a portion of Central Appalachia, has been a focal point for the proposed war against substance use. What remains undemonstrated in studies is exactly how substance abuse differs between the Central Appalachian counties of Eastern Kentucky and the remainder of the state, if any difference exists at all. In this study, the researchers examine how drug mortality, nonfatal overdoses, emergency room substance abuse diagnoses, and inpatient hospital substance abuse rates vary between Appalachian and non-Appalachian counties in Kentucky. Results indicate that there is a marginal difference in drug fatalities and a statistical difference in both emergency room and inpatient diagnoses of substance abuse. However, the non-fatal overdose rate is nearly identical for Appalachian and non-Appalachian counties across the state. The authors argue this can be explained through Relative Deprivation Theory, persistent underdevelopment of Kentucky’s Appalachian counties, and medical use practices in the region. The researchers close with recommendations on reconsidering how substance use is treated

Evaluation of glutathione S-transferase Pi in non-invasive ductal carcinoma of breast.

Glutathione S-transferase Pi (GST P) has been reported to be a marker of dysplastic lesions. For this reason expression of GST P by intraduct breast carcinoma was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Thirty-seven of 92 carcinomas (40%) were GST P positive. GST P staining did not correlate with histological variables, c-erbB-2 overexpression or with clinical outcome. The GST P status of recurrences did not correlate with that of the index lesion. There is little evidence that GST P is a useful marker of the potential of intraduct breast carcinoma to become invasive
