An Examination of Strong Female Characters in Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic Young Adult Literature

This study details the latent content analysis of seven young adult novels describing either dystopian or post-apocalyptic environments that centered on one strong female character. The focus of the analysis centered on each of the main characters as the strength of each character to determine the sources of their strength, to determine whether these sources were character traits or outside environmental sources and to define what roles that the other characters in the book play in the development of their strength. Ten different sources were isolated and it was determined that there are a mixture of both character traits and outside influences, as well as the influence of abstract ideals. It was determined that the influence of the relationships that each of the heroines experience served either as a motivation of their actions or support to endure their difficulties.Master of Science in Library Scienc

Sensation of being : new realism

To be free and yet not to lose touch with reality, that is the drama of that epic figure who is variously called inventor, artist or poet. Days and nights, dark or brightly lit . . . renewed visions of forms and objects bathed in artificial light. Trees cease to be trees, a shadow cuts across the hand placed on the counter, an eye deformed by the light, the changing silhouettes of the passers-by ... He fills himself with all this, drinks in the who of this vital instantiety which cuts through him in every direction. He is a sponge: sensation of being a sponge, transparency, acuteness, new realism. FERNAND LEGE

Ceramic objects : containers and handpieces

My thesis consists of ceramic objects made of stoneware and porcelain. I have been working with clay for three years and find myself becoming both more comfortable with and more excited by the possibilities of the material. In making clay objects, whether wheelthrown or handbuilt, there must be concern for both form and surface. As I work, the form may become the most important aspect of one piece, while in another the surface may dictate the form. With some of the ceramic objects the inner surface becomes the primary interest, while in others the outer surface is dominant. The glaze must enhance the ceramic object, but it cannot replace sensitivity in shape and proportion. That contour which is the touching of form and surrounding space defines the spirit of a ceramic piece. As I work toward the final shaping of a piece on the wheel, the fingers of my left hand often press outward to swell the form as my eyes watch the side of the piece until that edge seems to vibrate, in a sense, between the surface of the object and the space surrounding the object. This edge or contour is, of course, controlled by the space which the piece encloses. It is a matter of personal judgment and style as to the openness or closedness of a form. In most Greek pottery, for instance, the forms are closed spatially while many Sung Dynasty Chinese pieces open themselves to the intrusion of space. I find that the pieces of my work which are most satisfying and seem to hold the essence of my personal style have a certain vitality and openness—an outward thrust. The lips of some pieces turn outward to open up the forms

    Leadership for change

This edited volume reveals how the journey of transformation at the University of the Free State (UFS) became interwoven with student leadership development and global learning. The UFS initiated two intersecting co-curricular programmes, namely, the First-Year Leadership for Change (F1L4C) programme in 2010; and the triennial Global Leadership Summit (GLS) in 2012. Although these programmes changed over time, their core focus remained to be the development of transformational student leaders through the creation of global learning spaces. From its inception in 2010 to the last GLS in 2018, the UFS global learning project involved 780 students and 259 staff members from 109 institutions, across four continents. The goal of this edited volume is to create a deeper understanding of how the UFS F1L4C and GLS programmes enhanced student leadership development through global learning, especially in the context of higher education transformation
