Myth, Culture and Landscape:: Classical Identity and Interpretive Design at St. Bertrand de Comminges

The ordering principles of the Gallo-Roman city of Lugdunum Convenarum rest dormant within its landscape; the antique city and its topographic orders obscured by time. Yet the continued processes of academic excavation reveal only dusty foundations. Disconnected fragments of classical form, impoverished through autopsy, serve to confuse rather than illuminate. The desire to understand and experience the nature of this fairly modest Roman outpost clearly demands other forms of interpretive engagement than provided by the practices of archeology alone. The challenge is one of method. This paper investigates the role of theoretical design as a means of appreciating the essential city which rests integral to the charged landscape of St. Bertrand de Comminges. Hypothetically this implicit presence can best be explored through careful intervention and extension. Indeed, perhaps it is only through exploring an imaginary future that the spatial power of the historic city may be investigated; its essential conditions revealed to experience. This hypothesis will be explored through considering a theoretical master plan for an archeological park. Grounded on substantial archeological field work, this project attempts to bring the implicit principles there discovered to visibility. Systems of order, spatial sequence, and ideals of urban intent are identified and reflected upon through their transformation. This proposes to celebrate the specific nature of Saint Bertrand de Comminges, its classical and medieval attributes, along with the less tangible aspects of its landscape and urban sensibility. By extension the notion of design as a form of research may be considered. In this case the project investigates the ephemeral qualities of a place, and their potential extrapolation within contemporary form

English Language Learners: Problems and Solutions Found in the Research of General Practitioners of Early Childhood

    Get PDF
Increasing numbers of English Language Learners (ELLs) in early childhood classrooms have created challenges for in-service teachers in the general education setting. Traditional teacher preparation programs tend to lack a curriculum that focuses on second language teaching and learning. This paper reviews the problems facing teachers with regard to teaching at the level of research based best practices for ELLs. In addition, a critical examination of the literature has yielded basic solutions for practitioners. These solutions encompass programmatic (classroom) aspects, teacher training, and classroom pedagogy. The authors have concluded that based on the present literature, more research is needed to identify specific strategies and practices for educating non-native language learners in today’s classrooms

Fluency in Early Childhood: Contributions from the Research to Support Emerging and Struggling Readers

    Get PDF
This article examines the research regarding fluency and its impact on struggling readers. Fluency is a key component of reading instructions for all learners. It encompasses the students’ ability to read with automaticity, accuracy, and prosody for understanding. Research suggests that struggling readers have difficulty when fluency is weak, which impacts comprehension and cognitive resources. The examination of the literature yielded targeted interventions focused on fluency improves reading for students with reading difficulties

    Quantum measurement, detection and locality

According to Bell's theorem, local realism is incompatible with quantum theory. However, it depends on an implied assumption about quantum measurement. We suggest that the assumption might be removed by a detailed quantum analysis of the interaction between the measured system and measuring apparatus using Born's statistical interpretation. But it is conceivable that detailed analysis of all possible Bell experiments would allow the compatibility of quantum theory and local realism. The difficulties of theory and experiment are closely related.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures To be published in Phys. Lett.

Social work in movement: marketisation, differentiation and managerial performativity in Sweden and England

    Get PDF
This article considers the changing nature of social work in England and Sweden in the context of neoliberal reforms, and the consequences of the ongoing shifts to marketisation and differentiation, managerialism and performativity. Drawing on secondary sources and some interview data from English and Swedish social workers, the article argues that social workers in England and Sweden face similar shifts as marketisation, differentiation, managerialism and its related performativity reshape the occupation, all related to the influence of the macro-context of neoliberalism. ‘Evidence based practice’ has become elevated as an important approach in line with increasing managerialism and performativity, affecting micro processes of everyday working life. Differences between the two countries lie largely in the timing of reforms and how social workers respond to them in organised ways – through mobilisation within the profession in England and through trades unions and local authorities in Sweden. The changes create uncertainty for social workers; while they are not merely passive victims of change they face difficult conditions in which to forge alternative models of professional practice. Contrary to what might have been expected, given the different social, political and historical legacies in Sweden and England of social democracy and liberalism respectively, comparing the social work occupation in these two countries finds many more similarities than differences in how marketisation, differentiation, managerialism and performativity impact on the occupation

Gaming on the edge: using seams in ubicomp games

    Get PDF
Outdoor multi-player games are an increasingly popular application area for ubiquitous computing, supporting experimentation both with new technologies and new user experiences. This paper presents an outdoor ubicomp game that exploits the gaps or seams that exist in complex computer systems. Treasure is designed so that players move in and out of areas of wireless network coverage, taking advantage not only of the connectivity within a wireless ‘hotspot’ but of the lack of connectivity outside it. More broadly, this paper discusses how the notion of seamful design can be a source of design ideas for ubicomp games
