    Derivation of a dynamic model of the kinetics of nitrogen uptake throughout the growth of lettuce : calibration and validation

    A kinetic model of nitrogen (N) uptake throughout growth was developed for lettuce cultivated in nutrient solution under varying natural light conditions. The model couples nitrogen uptake with dry matter accumulation using a two-compartment mechanistic approach, incorporating structural and non-structural pools. Maximum nitrogen uptake rates are assumed to decline with shoot dry weight, to allow for the effects of plant age. The model was parameterized using data from the literature, and calibrated for differences in light intensity using an optimization algorithm utilizing data from three experiments in different growing seasons. The calibrated model was validated against the data from two independent experiments conducted under different light conditions. Results showed that the model made good predictions of nitrogen uptake by plants from seedlings to maturity under fluctuating light levels in a glasshouse. Plants grown at a higher light intensity showed larger maximum nitrogen uptake rates, but the effect of light intensity declined towards plant maturity

    The thermal conductivity of alternating spin chains

    We study a class of integrable alternating (S1,S2) quantum spin chains with critical ground state properties. Our main result is the description of the thermal Drude weight of the one-dimensional alternating spin chain as a function of temperature. We have identified the thermal current of the model with alternating spins as one of the conserved currents underlying the integrability. This allows for the derivation of a finite set of non-linear integral equations for the thermal conductivity. Numerical solutions to the integral equations are presented for specific cases of the spins S1 and S2. In the low-temperature limit a universal picture evolves where the thermal Drude weight is proportional to temperature T and central charge c.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur

    Tensor interaction constraints from beta decay recoil spin asymmetry of trapped atoms

    We have measured the angular distribution of recoiling daughter nuclei emitted from the Gamow-Teller β\beta decay of spin-polarized 80^{80}Rb. The asymmetry of this distribution vanishes to lowest order in the Standard Model (SM) in pure Gamow-Teller decays, producing an observable very sensitive to new interactions. We measure the non-SM contribution to the asymmetry to be ATA_{T}= 0.015 ±\pm 0.029 (stat) ±\pm 0.019 (syst), consistent with the SM prediction. We constrain higher-order SM corrections using the measured momentum dependence of the asymmetry, and their remaining uncertainty dominates the systematic error. Future progress in determining the weak magnetism term theoretically or experimentally would reduce the final errors.     Point-contact spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting state

    Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements of YNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectral function with dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV and further weak structures (hump or kink) at higher energy at about 50 meV. No "soft" modes below 12 meV are resolved in the normal state. The PC EPI spectra are qualitatively similar for the different directions. Contrary, directional study of the SC gap results in \Delta_[100]=1.5 meV for the a direction and \Delta_[001]=2.3 meV along the c axis; however the critical temperature T_c in PC in all cases is near to that in the bulk sample. The value 2\Delta_[001]/kT_c=3.6 is close to the BCS value of 3.52, and the temperature dependence \Delta_[001](T) is BCS-like, while the for small gap \Delta_[100](T) is below BCS behavior at T>T_c/2 similarly as in the two-gap superconductor MgB2. It is supposed that the directional variation \Delta can be attributed to a multiband nature of the SC state in YNi2B2C.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, to be published in a special issue of J.     The electric-quadrupole coupling constant of the ground states of the proton drip line nucleus 20^{20}Na(IπI^{\pi} = 2+^{+}, T1/2T_{1/2} = 447.9 ms) and the neutron-deficient nucleus 21^{21}Na(IπI^{\pi} = 3/2+^{+}, T1/2T_{1/2} = 22.49 s) in a hexagonal ZnO single crystal were precisely measured to be eqQ/h=690±12|eqQ/h| = 690 \pm 12 kHz and 939 ±\pm 14 kHz, respectively, using the multi-frequency β\beta-ray detecting nuclear magnetic resonance technique under presence of an electric-quadrupole interaction. A electric-quadrupole coupling constant of 27^{27}Na in the ZnO crystal was also measured to be eqQ/h=48.4±3.8|eqQ/h| = 48.4 \pm 3.8 kHz. The electric-quadrupole moments were extracted as Q(20|Q(^{20}Na)| = 10.3 ±\pm 0.8 ee fm2^2 and Q(21|Q(^{21}Na)| = 14.0 ±\pm 1.1 ee fm2^2, using the electric-coupling constant of 27^{27}Na and the known quadrupole moment of this nucleus as references. The present results are well explained by shell-model calculations in the full sdsd-shell model space.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters

    Electronic properties of LaOFFeAs in the normal state probed by NMR/NQR

    We report 139La, 57Fe and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on powders of the new LaO1-xFxFeAs superconductor for x = 0 and x = 0.1 at temperatures up to 480 K, and compare our measured NQR spectra with local density approximation (LDA) calculations. For all three nuclei in the x = 0.1 material, it is found that the local Knight shift increases monotonically with an increase in temperature, and scales with the macroscopic susceptibility, suggesting a single magnetic degree of freedom. Surprisingly, the spin lattice relaxation rates for all nuclei also scale with one another, despite the fact that the form factors for each site sample different regions of q-space. This result suggests a lack of any q-space structure in the dynamical spin susceptibility that might be expected in the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations. Rather, our results are more compatible with simple quasi-particle scattering. Furthermore, we find that the increase in the electric field gradient at the As cannot be accounted for by LDA calculations, suggesting that structural changes, in particular the position of the As in the unit cell, dominate the NQR response.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
