    Unpublished Mediterranean and Black Sea records of marine alien, cryptogenic, and neonative species

    To enrich spatio-temporal information on the distribution of alien, cryptogenic, and neonative species in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, a collective effort by 173 marine scientists was made to provide unpublished records and make them open access to the scientific community. Through this effort, we collected and harmonized a dataset of 12,649 records. It includes 247 taxa, of which 217 are Animalia, 25 Plantae and 5 Chromista, from 23 countries surrounding the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Chordata was the most abundant taxonomic group, followed by Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Annelida. In terms of species records, Siganus luridus, Siganus rivulatus, Saurida lessepsianus, Pterois miles, Upeneus moluccensis, Charybdis (Archias) longicollis, and Caulerpa cylindracea were the most numerous. The temporal distribution of the records ranges from 1973 to 2022, with 44% of the records in 2020–2021. Lethrinus borbonicus is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, while Pomatoschistus quagga, Caulerpa cylindracea, Grateloupia turuturu, and Misophria pallida are first records for the Black Sea; Kapraunia schneideri is recorded for the second time in the Mediterranean and for the first time in Israel; Prionospio depauperata and Pseudonereis anomala are reported for the first time from the Sea of Marmara.     The First Record of Marenzelleria neglecta and the Spread of Laonome xeprovala in the Danube Delta–Black Sea Ecosystem

    Biological invasions can have major impacts on freshwater and marine ecosystems. Therefore, it is vital that non-indigenous species are accurately identified and reported when potential or confirmed invasions occur. The present study reports the first occurrence of Marenzelleria neglecta (Annelida, Spionidae) and the spread of Laonome xeprovala (Annelida, Sabellidae) in the Danube Delta–Black Sea ecosystem. Spionidae is one of the most diverse families of annelid worms and is a dominant group in terms of the number of species that have been introduced to non-native areas, while the members of Sabellidae are among the most visible polychaetes commonly found in fouling communities and are colonizing new geographic areas. Based on 20 samples collected in 2021, we provide an overview of the distribution of the investigated species and possible arrival pathways for Marenzelleria neglecta. Specimens were identified based on morphological descriptions. Both species have invasive behaviour, colonizing large areas in relatively short time periods and reaching relatively high densities (M. neglecta—1400 ind.m−2; L. xeprovala—40 ind.m−2). Due to their distribution and high abundances, the biology and ecology of these species in the Danube River–Danube Delta–Black Sea system need to be investigated further in order to assess their impact on ecosystem structure and functioning

    A New Species of Free-Living Nematodes (Desmodorida, Desmodoridae) in the Romanian Black Sea Waters

    The paper reports the record of Pseudochromadora gomoi sp.n. in circalittoral habitats (at depths of 47–59 m) of the Romanian Black Sea waters. The species is characterized by a unispiral amphidial fovea, the presence of lateral alae stretching from the posterior end of the cardia to the level of the cloacal opening, but also shows unique features found in other Desmodorida genera (i.e., the presence of a precloacal ventral ala in males similar to several Desmodora or Echinodesmodora species and eight subcephalic setae on the head capsule). The presence of a constrictor cuticle ring and orange elongated ducts in the anterior body part as in Pseudodesmodora lacrima, Leduc and Wharton, 2010, were also noted. The morphometric measurements of our species differ from most of the Pseudochromadora species reported in specialty literature. We extracted and counted all desmodorid individuals from 9 meiobenthic samples collected in June 2020, and performed a detailed morphological analysis of 12 individuals (5 females and 7 males) belonging to our species, also highlighting the dissimilarities with the related desmodorid species

    An Assessment of Potential Beam Trawling Impact on North-Western Black Sea Benthic Habitats Aiming at a Sustainable Fisheries Management

    The North-Western Black Sea shelf is extremely vulnerable to disturbances of its habitats and ecosystems. In the past 10 years, this area has become targeted by beam trawl fisheries for the invasive gastropod Rapana venosa (Valenciennes, 1846), with a potentially destructive impact on the area’s soft bottoms. Not many studies have been performed in the region, and most investigations have focused on gear selectivity and by-catch rates. In this context, our novel research aimed, on the one hand, to assess and quantify the actual impact of beam trawling and, on the other hand, to propose effective spatial/temporal management measures for a sustainable zonation of the North-Western Black Sea shelf (marine zone of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve). The methodology used integrated beam trawl catch dynamics information, VMS data, geophysical investigations, and macrozoobenthos sampling. Our findings show that beam trawling activities can cause changes in the benthic habitat structure (lower number of taxa, lower values of ecological indicators, and an overall non-GES status). Further in-depth investigations are needed to underpin the ecosystem-based management of this marine protected area (MPA), aiming to allow the recovery of the affected benthic habitats, by alternating defined areas undergoing fishing with biological recovery polygons

    Abstract. This paper presents observations and ecological analyses of benthic community of the hard bottom mussels in the shallow waters. This study is based on the analysis of 21 quantitative biological samples collected by diving at 7 stations in two zones along the Romanian Black Sea Coast – Mamaia and Mangalia in 2003. The study attempts to pinpoint some aspects related to defining and adopting the term of “littoral cell” and to highlight the possible differences between the epibiontic communities developing on the inside and the outside of these coastal artificial structures. These hydrotechnic structures create a specific eco-climate inside the semi-closed aquatic area limited by the protective dams that influence the number and spatial distribution of the epibiontic organisms. The study reveals the occurrence of 76 species of benthic organisms belonging to 13 supraspecific taxa, with an average density of 2 122 523 indvs.m-2 and a biomass of 19 437,2 g.m-2. Numerically, the dominant species are the crustaceans (~539 224 indvs.m-2) and worms (~416 972 indvs.m-2) and the weight dominants are molluscs – Mytilus galloprovincialis over 96 % and crustaceans (~136 g.m-2)

    DNA Barcoding and Distribution of Gastropods and Malacostracans in the Lower Danube Region

    This survey reports the spatial distribution of gastropods belonging to Caenogastropoda, Architaenioglossa, Littorinimorpha, Cycloneritida and Hygrophila orders, and malacostracans from Amphipoda and Mysida orders in the lower sector of the Danube River, Romania, using DNA barcoding based on the cytochrome C oxidase I (COI) gene sequence. Sampling was performed for eight locations of Danube Delta branches and Bechet area during three consecutive years (2019–2021). Molecular identification of sixteen gastropods and twelve crustacean individuals was confirmed to the species level, providing the first molecular identification of gastropods from the Lower Danube sector. Phylogenetic analysis showed that species of gastropods and crustaceans clustered in monophyletic groups. Among gastropods, Microcolpia daudebartii acicularis, Viviparus viviparus, Bithynia tentaculata, Physa fontinalis, Ampullaceana lagotis and Planorbarius corneus were identified in Chilia and Sulina branches; and the Bechet area was populated by Holandriana holandrii, Theodoxus transversalis and Gyraulus parvus. The amphipods and mysids were present along the three main Danube branches. The calculated density of these species revealed an abundant community of crustacean Chelicorophium robustum on Sulina branch, and Dikerogammarus haemobaphes and D. villosus in extended areas of the Danube Delta.
