    Existence of weak solutions to some stationary Schrödinger equations with singular nonlinearity

    We prove some existence (and sometimes also uniqueness) of weak solutions to some stationary equations associated to the complex Schrödinger operator under the presence of a singular nonlinear term. Among other new facts, with respect some previous results in the literature for such type of nonlinear potential terms, we include the case in which the spatial domain is possibly unbounded (something which is connected with some previous localization results by the authors),the presence of possible non-local terms at the equation, the case of boundary conditions different to the Dirichlet ones and, finally, the proof of the existence of solutions when the right-hand side term of the equation is beyond the usual L2-space

    Coping styles in farmed fish: consequences for aquaculture

    Individual differences in physiological and behavioural responses to stressors are increasingly recognised as adaptive variation and thus raw material for evolution and fish farming improvements including selective breeding. Such individual variation has been evolutionarily conserved and is present in all vertebrate taxa including fish. In farmed animals, the interest in consistent trait associations, that is coping styles, has increased dramatically over the last years because many studies have demonstrated links to performance traits, health and disease susceptibility and welfare. This study will review (i) the main behavioural, neuroendocrine, cognitive and emotional differences between reactive and proactive coping styles in farmed fish; (ii) the methodological approaches used to identify coping styles in farmed fish, including individual (group) mass-screening tests; and (iii) how knowledge on coping styles may contribute to improved sustainability of the aquaculture industry, including welfare and performance of farmed fish. Moreover, we will suggest areas for future research, where genetic basis (heritability/epigene tic) of coping styles, and the neuroendocrine mechanisms behind consistent as well as flexible behavioural patterns are pinpointed as central themes. In addition, the ontogeny of coping styles and the influence of age, social context and environmental change in coping styles will also be discussed.European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme FP7-KBBE [265957

    Toxic Effects of Domoic Acid in the Seabream Sparus aurata

    Neurotoxicity induced in fish by domoic acid (DA) was assessed with respect to occurrence of neurotoxic signs, lethality, and histopathology by light microscopy. Sparus aurata were exposed to a single dose of DA by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of 0, 0.45, 0.9, and 9.0 mg DA kg−1 bw. Mortality (66.67 ± 16.67%) was only observed in dose of 9.0 mg kg−1 bw. Signs of neurological toxicity were detected for the doses of 0.9 and 9.0 mg DA kg−1 bw. Furthermore, the mean concentrations (±SD) of DA detected by HPLC-UV in extracts of brain after exposure to 9.0 mg DA kg−1 bw were 0.61 ± 0.01, 0.96 ± 0.00, and 0.36 ± 0.01 mg DA kg−1 tissue at 1, 2, and 4 hours. The lack of major permanent brain damage in S. aurata, and reversibility of neurotoxic signs, suggest that lower susceptibility to DA or neuronal recovery occurs in affected individuals

    On a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a localizing effect

    We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation associated to a singular potential of the form a vertical bar u vertical bar(-(1-m))u + bu, for some In is an element of (0, 1), on a possible unbounded domain. We use some suitable energy methods to prove that if Re(a) + Im(a) > 0 and if the initial and right hand side data have compact support then any possible solution must also have a compact support for any t > 0. This property contrasts with the behavior of solutions associated to regular potentials (m >= 1). Related results are proved also for the associated stationary problem and for self-similar Solution on the whole space and potential a vertical bar u vertical bar(-(1-m)u). The existence of solutions is obtained by some compactness methods under additional conditions
