Development and testing of hermetic, laser-ignited pyrotechnic and explosive components
During the last decade there has been increasing interest in the use of lasers in place of electrical systems to ignite various pyrotechnic and explosive materials. The principal driving force for this work was the requirement for safer energetic components which would be insensitive to electrostatic and electromagnetic radiation. In the last few years this research has accelerated since the basic concepts have proven viable. At the present time it is appropriate to shift the research emphasis in laser initiation from the scientific arena--whether it can be done--to the engineering realm--how it can be put into actual practice in the field. Laser initiation research and development at EG&G Mound was in three principal areas: (1) laser/energetic material interactions; (2) development of novel processing techniques for fabricating hermetic (helium leak rate of less than 1 x 10(exp -8) cu cm/s) laser components; and (3) evaluation and testing of laser-ignited components. Research in these three areas has resulted in the development of high quality, hermetic, laser initiated components. Examples are presented which demonstrate the practicality of fabricating hermetic, laser initiated explosive or pyrotechnic components that can be used in the next generation of ignitors, actuators, and detonators
Disentangling Risk and Change: Internal and External Social Comparison in the Mutual Fund Industry
Using data on 3,225 actively managed U.S. mutual funds from 1980 to 2006, we test hypotheses designed to disentangle risk and change as outcomes of behavioral performance feedback routines. We theorize that managers make decisions involving risk and decisions involving change under different conditions and motivated by different concerns. Our results show internal social comparison across units within a firm will motivate risk, whereas external social comparison across firms will motivate change. When a fund experiences a performance shortfall relative to internal social comparison, the manager is likely to make decisions that involve risk because the social and spatial proximity of internal comparisons trigger individual concern and fear of negative individual consequences, such as job loss. In contrast, when a fund experiences a performance shortfall in comparison with external benchmarks, the manager is more likely to consider the shortfall an organizational concern and make changes that do not necessarily involve risk. Although we might assume that negative performance in comparison with both internal and external benchmarks would spur risky change, our results indicate that risky change occurs most often when a decision maker receives unfavorable internal social performance feedback and favorable external social performance feedback. By questioning assumptions about why and when organizational change involves risk, this study begins to separate change and risk outcomes of the decision-making process
Production and quality assurance automation in the Goddard Space Flight Center Flight Dynamics Facility
The Flight Dynamics Facility (FDF) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) generates numerous products for NASA-supported spacecraft, including the Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS's), the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), and the space shuttle. These products include orbit determination data, acquisition data, event scheduling data, and attitude data. In most cases, product generation involves repetitive execution of many programs. The increasing number of missions supported by the FDF has necessitated the use of automated systems to schedule, execute, and quality assure these products. This automation allows the delivery of accurate products in a timely and cost-efficient manner. To be effective, these systems must automate as many repetitive operations as possible and must be flexible enough to meet changing support requirements. The FDF Orbit Determination Task (ODT) has implemented several systems that automate product generation and quality assurance (QA). These systems include the Orbit Production Automation System (OPAS), the New Enhanced Operations Log (NEOLOG), and the Quality Assurance Automation Software (QA Tool). Implementation of these systems has resulted in a significant reduction in required manpower, elimination of shift work and most weekend support, and improved support quality, while incurring minimal development cost. This paper will present an overview of the concepts used and experiences gained from the implementation of these automation systems

Oxygen Glucose Deprivation in Rat Hippocampal Slice Cultures Results in Alterations in Carnitine Homeostasis and Mitochondrial Dysfunction
Mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by depolarization of mitochondrial membranes and the initiation of mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis are pathological responses to hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in the neonatal brain. Carnitine metabolism directly supports mitochondrial metabolism by shuttling long chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for beta-oxidation. Our previous studies have shown that HI disrupts carnitine homeostasis in neonatal rats and that L-carnitine can be neuroprotective. Thus, this study was undertaken to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which HI alters carnitine metabolism and to begin to elucidate the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effect of L-carnitine (LCAR) supplementation. Utilizing neonatal rat hippocampal slice cultures we found that oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) decreased the levels of free carnitines (FC) and increased the acylcarnitine (AC): FC ratio. These changes in carnitine homeostasis correlated with decreases in the protein levels of carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT) 1 and 2. LCAR supplementation prevented the decrease in CPT1 and CPT2, enhanced both FC and the AC: FC ratio and increased slice culture metabolic viability, the mitochondrial membrane potential prior to OGD and prevented the subsequent loss of neurons during later stages of reperfusion through a reduction in apoptotic cell death. Finally, we found that LCAR supplementation preserved the structural integrity and synaptic transmission within the hippocampus after OGD. Thus, we conclude that LCAR supplementation preserves the key enzymes responsible for maintaining carnitine homeostasis and preserves both cell viability and synaptic transmission after OGD
Experimental realisation of Shor's quantum factoring algorithm using qubit recycling
Quantum computational algorithms exploit quantum mechanics to solve problems
exponentially faster than the best classical algorithms. Shor's quantum
algorithm for fast number factoring is a key example and the prime motivator in
the international effort to realise a quantum computer. However, due to the
substantial resource requirement, to date, there have been only four
small-scale demonstrations. Here we address this resource demand and
demonstrate a scalable version of Shor's algorithm in which the n qubit control
register is replaced by a single qubit that is recycled n times: the total
number of qubits is one third of that required in the standard protocol.
Encoding the work register in higher-dimensional states, we implement a
two-photon compiled algorithm to factor N=21. The algorithmic output is
distinguishable from noise, in contrast to previous demonstrations. These
results point to larger-scale implementations of Shor's algorithm by harnessing
scalable resource reductions applicable to all physical architectures.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Spectroscopic bulge-disc decomposition: a new method to study the evolution of lenticular galaxies
A new method for spectroscopic bulge-disc decomposition is presented, in
which the spatial light profile in a two-dimensional spectrum is decomposed
wavelength-by-wavelength into bulge and disc components, allowing separate
one-dimensional spectra for each component to be constructed. This method has
been applied to observations of a sample of nine S0s in the Fornax Cluster in
order to obtain clean high-quality spectra of their individual bulge and disc
components. So far this decomposition has only been fully successful when
applied to galaxies with clean light profiles, consequently limiting the number
of galaxies that could be separated into bulge and disc components. Lick index
stellar population analysis of the component spectra reveals that in those
galaxies where the bulge and disc could be distinguished, the bulges have
systematically higher metallicities and younger stellar populations than the
discs. This correlation is consistent with a picture in which S0 formation
comprises the shutting down of star formation in the disc accompanied by a
final burst of star formation in the bulge. The variation in spatial-fit
parameters with wavelength also allows us to measure approximate colour
gradients in the individual components. Such gradients were detected separately
in both bulges and discs, in the sense that redder light is systematically more
centrally concentrated in all components. However, a search for radial
variations in the absorption line strengths determined for the individual
components revealed that they are absent from the vast majority of S0 discs and
bulges. The absence of gradients in line indices for most galaxies implies that
the colour gradient cannot be attributed to age or metallicity variations, and
is therefore most likely associated with varying degrees of obscuration by

The Mini Astrophysical MeV Background Observatory (MAMBO) CubeSat Mission
The origin of the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray (CDG) background in the 0.3 – 30 MeV energy range is a mystery that has persisted for over 40 years. The Mini Astrophysical MeV Background Observatory (MAMBO) is a CubeSat mission concept motivated by the fact that, since the MeV CDG is relatively bright, only a small detector is required to make high-quality measurements of it. Indeed, the sensitivity of space-based gamma-ray instruments to the CDG is limited not by size, but by the locally generated instrumental background produced by interactions of energetic particles in spacecraft materials. Comparatively tiny CubeSat platforms provide a uniquely quiet environment relative to previous gamma-ray science missions. The MAMBO mission will provide the best measurements ever made of the MeV CDG spectrum and angular distribution, utilizing two key innovations: 1) low instrumental background on a 12U CubeSat platform; and 2) an innovative shielded spectrometer design that simultaneously measures signal and background. Enabling technologies include the use of compact silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for scintillator readout, and a tagged calibration source for real-time gain adjustment. We describe the MAMBO instrument, readout, commercial 12U bus systems, and mission concept in detail, including simulations and laboratory measurements demonstrating the key measurement concept
Cross Section and Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetry of Mesons in Collisions at GeV at Forward Rapidity
We present a measurement of the cross section and transverse single-spin
asymmetry () for mesons at large pseudorapidity from
~GeV collisions. The measured cross section for
~GeV/ and is well described by a
next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculation. The
asymmetries have been measured as a function of Feynman- () from
, as well as transverse momentum () from
~GeV/. The asymmetry averaged over positive is
. The results are consistent with prior
transverse single-spin measurements of forward and mesons at
various energies in overlapping ranges. Comparison of different particle
species can help to determine the origin of the large observed asymmetries in
