    Busy Internet archives generate large logs for each access method being used. These raw log files can be difficult to process and to search. This paper describes a system for reading these growing logs, a combined log file format into which they are re-written and a system that automates this building and integration for multiple access methods. Automated summarizing of the information is also provided giving statistics on accesses by user, site, path-name and date/time amongst others

    To address a variety of questions pertaining to the interactions between physical activity, musculoskeletal loading and musculoskeletal health/injury/adaptation, simple methods are needed to quantify, outside a laboratory setting, the forces acting on the human body during daily activities. The purpose of this study was to develop a statistically based model to estimate peak vertical ground reaction force (pVGRF) during youth gait. 20 girls (10.9 ± 0.9 years) and 15 boys (12.5 ± 0.6 years) wore a Biotrainer AM over their right hip. Six walking and six running trials were completed after a standard warm-up. Average AM intensity (g) and pVGRF (N) during stance were determined. Repeated measures mixed effects regression models to estimate pVGRF from Biotrainer activity monitor acceleration in youth (girls 10-12, boys 12-14 years) while walking and running were developed. Log transformed pVGRF had a statistically significant relationship with activity monitor acceleration, centered mass, sex (girl), type of locomotion (run), and locomotion type-acceleration interaction controlling for subject as a random effect. A generalized regression model without subject specific random effects was also developed. The average absolute differences between the actual and predicted pVGRF were 5.2% (1.6% standard deviation) and 9% (4.2% standard deviation) using the mixed and generalized models, respectively. The results of this study support the use of estimating pVGRF from hip acceleration using a mixed model regression equation

    Plecoptera of the Ohio River: Community Composition and Species Phenologies of Nymphs Collected Near Cincinnati, Ohio

    Author Institution: Department of Biological Sciences, University of CincinnatiCommunity composition of the nymphal stoneflies of the Ohio River was determined by sampling with artificial substrates at 5-week intervals from January-December, 1979, near Cincinnati, Ohio. Seven species were collected from this large river. Isoperla bilineata, Perlesta placida, and especially Taeniopteryx burksi were abundant at certain times of the year. Determinations of nymphal maturity, using body length measurements and wing development, coupled with the presence/absence of the various species in the samples, indicated that P. placida has a very short growth and maturation period. Taeniopteryx burksi and P. placida exhibited extended diapause periods in their life cycles. A comparison of the present-day stonefly composition in an Ohio River that has been modified by the placement of high-level dams, with that of the plecopteran composition in the early 1930s (low-level dams in place), showed no marked changes in community composition. Since the low-level dam navigation system was completed in the late 1920s, either the stonefly fauna has remained comparatively unaffected by damming, or any marked faunal changes had already taken place by the early 1930s as a consequence of the placement of the low-level dams

    In the Wake of Sakhalin II: How Non-Governmental Administration of Natural Resources Could Strengthn Russia\u27s Enery Sector

    Russia’s economically vital oil and gas industry is at a crossroads. Although foreign investment favored European nations in the wake of the Soviet collapse, in recent years American and European oil and gas companies have invested billions of dollars in Russia’s energy development and export distribution sectors. However, the 2006 restructuring of the $20 billion Sakhalin II project demonstrates that Russia’s energy sector has still not stabilized from the turbulent privatization of the 1990s. This comment explores the legal structures and Government policies affecting Russia’s oil and gas industry for evidence of the causes of institutional instability. It argues that to prevent political and business elites from continuing to manipulate the country’s most profitable industry, Russia’s energy resources should be administered by an independent entity, a Public Leasing Authority. By creating a new institution with transparent motives, Russia may be able to remove the historic temptation to use economic regulation to accomplish short-term political goals and thereby enhance the stability of its energy sector and its larger economy
