Heterogeneity and the nonparametric analysis of consumer choice: conditions for invertibility

This paper considers structural nonparametric random utility models for continuous choice variables. It provides suffcient conditions on random preferences to yield reduced- form systems of nonparametric stochastic demand functions that allow global invertibility between demands and random utility components. Uncertain futures: imaginaries, narratives and calculative technologies

Dynamic capitalist economies are characterised by relentless innovation and novelty and hence exhibit an indeterminacy that cannot be reduced to measurable risk. How then do economic actors form expectations and decide how to act despite this uncertainty? This paper focuses on the role played by imaginaries, narratives, and calculative technologies, and argues that the market impact of shared calculation devices, social narratives, and contingent imaginaries underlines the rationale for a new form of ‘narrative economics’ and a theory of fictional (rather than rational) expectations. When expectations cannot be anchored in objective probability functions, the future belongs to those with the market, political, or rhetorical power to make their models or stories count. The paper also explores the dangers of analytical monocultures and the discourse of best practice in conditions of uncertainty, and considers the link between uncertainty and some aspects of populism

SIGNIFICADOS DO LUTO PARA PESSOAS QUE ENFRENTARAM A MORTE DE UM FAMILIAR POR COVID-19

Objective: understand the meanings of grief for people who faced the death of a family member due to COVID-19. Method: qualitative study, of the participant-action type, based on Paulo Freire's theoretical-methodological assumptions. 16 family members, residents of the coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil, participated. A Virtual Culture Circle was held, following the steps of the Freirean Itinerary. Results: They revealed that they experienced not only the grief of the family member, but also of countless friends. The pandemic took away the opportunity to say goodbye to the family member, as well as the joy in the family context, employment, in-person classes for the children, meetings, weddings, hugs and smiles. In the experience of mourning, the feeling of sadness was mainly evidenced. However, the pandemic also brought about intense learning, allowing for the strengthening of the family. Conclusion: the meaning of mourning was permeated by numerous losses, restricting the experience of the stages of mourning. But, given this whole process, people mainly sought to value their family.Objetivo: comprender los significados del duelo para las personas que enfrentaron la muerte de un familiar por COVID-19. Método: estudio cualitativo, participativo-acción, basado en los supuestos teórico-metodológicos de Paulo Freire. Participaron 16 familiares, residentes de la costa de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Se realizó un Círculo de Cultura Virtual, siguiendo los pasos del Itinerario Freireano. Resultados: Los participantes revelaron que experimentaron el dolor del familiar y de innumerables amigos. La pandemia le quitó la oportunidad de despedir al familiar, el trabajo, las clases presenciales de los niños, reuniones, bodas, abrazos y sonrisas. Pero también trajo aprendizaje y fortalecimiento para la familia. La pandemia también trajo consigo un aprendizaje y el fortalecimiento de la familia. Conclusión: el significado del duelo estuvo impregnado de numerosas pérdidas, restringiendo la vivencia de las etapas del duelo. Pero, dado todo este proceso, la gente tambien buscaron valorar su familia.Objetivo: compreender os significados do luto para as pessoas que enfrentaram a morte de um familiar devido a COVID-19. Método: estudo qualitativo, do tipo ação-participante, fundamentado nos pressupostos de Paulo Freire. Participaram 16 familiares, residentes no litoral de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Realizou-se um Círculo de Cultura de modo virtual, seguindo as etapas do Itinerário Freireano. Resultados: os participantes significaram que a vivência do luto do familiar, devido a COVID-19, tirou-lhes a oportunidade de se despedir do ente querido. A pandemia também lhes tirou o emprego, as aulas presenciais dos filhos, encontros, casamentos, abraços e sorrisos. Mas também significaram que trouxe aprendizado, com fortalecimento da espiritualidade e família. Conclusão: o significado do luto permeou inúmeras perdas, restringindo a vivência das etapas do luto. Thomas K. McCraw is justly admired as a consummate prose stylist, a talented editor, a perceptive historian of the United States, and an inspiring teacher whose mastery of the biographical form led to a string of elegantly written prize-winning publications that are widely read and often taught. The publication one month before McCraw’s death in November 2012 of his last book, The Founders and Finance, provides the occasion for this essay, which contends that McCraw also deserves to be remembered as a founder of two thriving academic subfields—policy history and the history of capitalism—despite the fact that he trained relatively few history PhD students, and rarely appeared in public during the final years of his life as the result of a debilitating illness that greatly limited his mobility

Music as a health promoter in the surgery waiting room: companions' perceptions / Música como promotora da saúde na sala de espera de cirurgia: percepções de acompanhantes

Objective: to understand the perceptions of companions awaiting news from their loved ones who are undergoing surgery, about the use of music as a strategy to promote health in the hospital. Method: a descriptive, exploratory, qualitative study, based on the theoretical assumptions of Health Promotion, with the participation of 15 companions who were waiting for news from their loved ones in a waiting room in the hospital environment. Semi-structured interviews were carried out and the data were organized and analyzed according to content analysis. Results: the participants highlighted some possibilities to promote health in the hospital surgery waiting room, such as music, which provides distraction from the worrying reality, happiness, life, joy, hope, good feelings, cheer and tranquility. Final considerations: music stands out as a technology to promote health, arousing positive feelings during musical interventions in the hospital. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the discussion and use of music as a strategy to promote health in the hospital environment.Objetivo: compreender as percepções dos acompanhantes que aguardam notícias de seus entes queridos que estão em cirurgia, sobre a utilização da música como estratégia para promover saúde no hospital. Método: estudo descritivo, exploratório, qualitativo, fundamentado nos pressupostos teóricos da Promoção da Saúde, com a participação de 15 acompanhantes que aguardavam notícias de seus entes queridos em uma sala de espera no ambiente hospital. Realizaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas e os dados foram organizados e analisados conforme análise de conteúdo. Resultados: os participantes destacaram algumas possibilidades para promover saúde na sala de espera de cirurgia do hospital, como a música, a qual proporciona distração da realidade preocupante, felicidade, vida, alegria, esperança, sensações boas, ânimo e tranquilidade. Considerações finais: a música destaca-se como tecnologia para promover saúde, despertando sentimentos positivos durante as intervenções musicais no hospital. Portanto, faz-se necessário ampliar a discussão e utilização da música como estratégia para promover saúde no âmbito hospitalar.
