2006 NASA Range Safety Annual Report

Throughout 2006, Range Safety was involved in a number of exciting and challenging activities and events, from developing, implementing, and supporting Range Safety policies and procedures-such as the Space Shuttle Launch and Landing Plans, the Range Safety Variance Process, and the Expendable Launch Vehicle Safety Program procedures-to evaluating new technologies. Range Safety training development is almost complete with the last course scheduled to go on line in mid-2007. Range Safety representatives took part in a number of panels and councils, including the newly formed Launch Constellation Range Safety Panel, the Range Commanders Council and its subgroups, the Space Shuttle Range Safety Panel, and the unmanned aircraft systems working group. Space based range safety demonstration and certification (formerly STARS) and the autonomous flight safety system were successfully tested. The enhanced flight termination system will be tested in early 2007 and the joint advanced range safety system mission analysis software tool is nearing operational status. New technologies being evaluated included a processor for real-time compensation in long range imaging, automated range surveillance using radio interferometry, and a space based range command and telemetry processor. Next year holds great promise as we continue ensuring safety while pursuing our quest beyond the Moon to Mars

Prevention and Control of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in The Netherlands and Germany-The Impact of Healthcare Structures

The Netherlands and Germany are neighbouring countries within the European Union but are differently affected by multidrug-resistant microorganisms (MDRO). In this narrative review, we summarize data about antibiotic use, the occurrence of MDRO and healthcare-associated infections in these two countries, as well as data about organizational and structural differences between the Dutch and German healthcare systems. These results are discussed with a focus on whether or how the organization of healthcare influences MDRO prevention. We found that from the point of view of MDRO prevention, a higher density of inpatient care, a higher number of hospitals, a longer length of stay and lower staffing ratios might facilitate MDRO dissemination in German hospitals

A single-arm, open-label study to assess the immunogenicity, safety, and efficacy of etanercept manufactured using the serum-free, high-capacity manufacturing process administered to patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Objective: To evaluate the immunogenicity, safety, and efficacy of etanercept (ETN) manufactured using the serum-free, high-capacity manufacturing (SFHCM) process in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). ----- Methods: In this global, multicenter, open-label, single-arm study (NCT02378506), 187 adult patients with moderate to severe RA received ETN 50 mg once weekly for 24 weeks manufactured using the SFHCM process. Immunogenicity (presence of antidrug antibodies (ADAs) and neutralizing antibodies (NAbs)) was assessed at 12 and 24 weeks. Safety and efficacy were evaluated at 4, 12, and 24 weeks. ----- Results: Eight (4.5%) patients tested positive for ADA, and there were no NAbs detected at any time throughout the study. Ninety (48.1%) patients reported treatment-emergent adverse events (AEs), of which 27 (14.4%) reported injection-site reactions, and 43 (23.0%) reported infections. The majority of AEs were mild or moderate in severity, and the drug was well tolerated. Throughout the duration of the study (week 4 to week 24), there was a progressive increase in the American College of Rheumatology (ACR)-defined responses (ACR20: 55.9%–82.0%, ACR50: 16.1%–57.8%, and ACR70: 3.2%–26.7%) from baseline and the proportion of patients achieving low disease activity and remission, with a corresponding decrease in measures of disease activity. ----- Conclusion: The immunogenicity, safety, and efficacy of ETN manufactured using the SFHCM process were similar to the current approved ETN formulation. OCT1 polymorphism is associated with response and survival time in anti-Parkinsonian drug users

Substrates for the Organic Cation Transporter 1, encoded by the SLC22A1 gene, are metformin, amantadine, pramipexole, and, possibly, levodopa. Recently, we identified that the rs622342 A > C polymorphism is associated with the HbA1c lowering effect in metformin users. In the Rotterdam Study, we associated this polymorphism with higher prescribed doses of all anti-Parkinsonian drugs. Between the first and fifth prescriptions for levodopa, for each minor rs622342 C allele, the prescribed doses were 0.34 defined daily dose higher (95% CI 0.064, 0.62; p = 0.017). The mortality ratio after start of levodopa therapy was 1.47 times higher (95% CI 1.01, 2.13; p = 0.045)

Nostalgic Masculinity: Homosocial Desire and Homosexual Panic in James Ellroy's This Storm

The second volume in James Ellroy's ‘Second LA Quartet’, This Storm (2019), offers a complex miscellany of war profiteering, fifth column sabotage, and institutional corruption, all of which is starkly projected against the sobering backdrop of the internment of Japanese-Americans. Whilst presenting Ellroy's most diverse assemblage of characters to date, the narrative is, nonetheless, principally centred on the intersecting bonds between men. Although the prevalence of destructive masculine authority in Ellroy's works has been widely discussed, what has often been overlooked are the specifically ‘homosocial’ dimensions of these relationships. Whilst these homosocial bonds are frequently energised and solidified by homophobic violence (both physical and rhetorical), this paper will argue that they are simultaneously wrought by ‘homosexual panic’; the anxiety deriving for the indeterminate boundaries between homosocial and homosexual desire. This panic is expressed most profoundly in This Storm in the form of corrupt policeman Dudley Smith. Haunted by a repressed homosexual encounter, Smith's paranoid behaviour and increasingly punitive violence derives from his inability to establish clear boundaries between his intense homosocial bonds and latent homosexual desires. Thus, whilst Ellroy's ‘nostalgic masculinity’ attempts to circumscribe the dimensions and inviolability of male identity, the paranoia and violence that underscores the various machinations of Ellroy's crooked cops ultimately exposes the fragility of such constructions
