The Myth Still Lives: Pachuco Subculture and Symbolic Styles of Resistance
In this thesis, the emergence of pachucos and their later influence on Chicano movement ideology is examined. By visually challenging accepted racial identities, pachucos protested the discrimination of their time. Later on, Chicanos would take the figure of the pachuco and combine it with other aspects of Chicano ideology to form a synthesized symbol of resistance to inspire their fight for equal rights

The seismic response to fracture clustering : a finite element wave propagation study
textCharacterizing natural and man-made fracture networks is fundamental to predicting the storage capacity and pathways for flow of both carbonate and shale reservoirs. The goal of this study is to determine the seismic response specifically to networks of fractures clustered closely together through the analysis of seismic wavefield scatter, directional phase velocities, and amplitude attenuation. To achieve this goal, finite element modeling techniques are implemented to allow for the meshing of discontinuous fracture interfaces and, therefore, provide the most accurate calculation of seismic events from these irregular surfaces. The work presented here focuses on the center layer of an isotropic model that is populated with two main phases of fracture network alteration: a single large-scale cluster and multiple smaller-scale clusters. Phase 1 first confirms that the seismic response of a single idealized vertically fractured cluster is distinct crosscutting energy within a seismogram. Further investigation shows that, as fracture spacing within the cluster decreases, the depth at which crosscutting energy appears exponentially increases, placing it well below the true location of the cluster. This relationship holds until 28% of the fractures are moved from their uniformly spaced locations to random locations within the cluster. The vertical thickness of the cluster has little effect on the location or strength or the crosscutting signature. Phase 2 shows that, although clusters of more randomly spaced fractures mask crosscutting energy, a marked decrease in amplitude coinciding with a bend in the wavefront produces a heterogeneous anisotropic seismic response. This amplitude decay and heterogeneous anisotropy is visible until cluster spacing drops below one half of the wavelength or the ratio of fractured material to matrix material within a cluster drops below 37%. Therefore, the location of an individual fracture cluster can be determined from the location of amplitude decay, heterogeneous anisotropy, and crosscutting energy. Furthermore, the density of the cluster can be determined from the degree of amplitude decay, the angle of heterogeneous anisotropy, and the depth of cross-cutting energy. These relationships, constrained by limits on their detectability, can aid fracture network interpretation of real seismic data.Geological Science
The School Principal and Teacher Retention
This report comes from the MERC Teacher Retention study. This study was designed to identify patterns of teacher retention in the MERC region and to determine the school and system-level factors driving them. The study also provides an overview of state and regional policies and programs relevant to teacher retention, and includes evaluations of existing policies and initiatives to determine efficacy and cost benefit. This policy brief examines the role of leadership, and specifically the school principal, in retaining teachers. The brief includes a review of studies that used survey scales to measure leadership and then disaggregate and re-aggregate the items in those scales into a handful of common themes. The purpose of this policy brief is to review the foundational literature on the role of the principal in order to develop a set of focus areas for principals who want to improve teacher retention

The Effects of Screen Media Exposure on Children's Word Learning
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP, 1999) recommends that parents limit their 2- to 5-year-old children to 2 hours of television per day. This recommendation is due in part to research showing that a video deficit effect exists in which children under the age of 2 learn significantly worse from a video than from a live person. Fifty 30- to 36-month olds completed a word-learning task, trained either in person or through a video, while their parent took a survey regarding their screen media viewing habits. There was a significant interaction between condition and screen media hours watched. Children who watched below the AAP’s recommended 2 hours per day retained a video deficit while those who watched 2 or more hours per day learned equally well from both conditions. This suggests that the video deficit is overcome following greater exposure to screen media. Further investigation revealed that regardless of condition, children who watched between 45 and 75 minutes of screen media per day outperformed their peers, suggesting that there may be an optimal amount of screen media exposure necessary for kids to learn from both sources

при высоких уровнях давления рабочей среды, что позволяет обеспечить необходимые
режимы охлаждения образцов, снизить уровень энергии разрушения, повысить надежность
и безопасность испытаний.Розглянуто конструктивні особливості устаткування для дослідження міцності
і закономірностей руйнування листових конструкційних матеріалів
при двовісному розтязі зразків одностороннім тиском робочого середовища.
Запропоновано рішення ряду проблем методичного характеру, що пов’язані
з випробуваннями при високих рівнях тиску робочого середовища. Це
дозволить забезпечити необхідні режими охолодження зразків, знизити рівень
