    Phase III of USO Solar Vector Magnetograph

    The Solar Vector Magnetograph (SVM) is a modern imaging spectropolarimeter installed at Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO). Earlier phases saw the development of the instrument using off-the-shelf components with in-house software development. Subsequently, improvements were done in the opto-mechanical design of the sub-systems and the telescope tracking system. The third phase of the instrument development saw three major improvements, these include: (i) installation of a web-camera based telescope guiding system, developed in-house, (ii) high-cadence spectropolarimetry using Liquid Crystal Variable Retarders and a fast CCD camera and (iii)inclusion of Na D1 line with regular photospheric Fe 630.2 nm line for chromospheric observations.Comment: 3 pages, 1 table; To appear in the Proceedings of Evershed Meeting, IIA, Bangalor

    Deep H alpha images of interacting galaxies

    Gravitational interactions between galaxies are believed to increase star formation activity dramatically, and most of the brightest starburst galaxies show clear signs of recent interactions. However, it is still not known how interaction triggers star formation, nor are there models to relate the type or strength of interaction to the location or amount of star formation. We report on a series of deep H alpha images of interacting and post-interaction galaxies which we took with the purpose of finding the young stars and ionized gas in these objects. We were motivated in part by the hope that by studying the very recently formed stars we could see how the interaction process had affected the star formation. We observed the galaxies through 50 A-wide filters, one on the redshifted H alpha line and one off, and a standard R filter. Depending on the galaxy and conditions, images in the B, V, and I filters were also obtained. The images were recorded with a 4x7 ft. or 17 ft. diameter CCD at the 1-meter telescope of the Wise Observatory in Mitzpe Ramon. The H alpha and continuum images are used, together with observations at other wavelengths, to put together as complete a picture as possible of star formation and interactions in each galaxy. The complete observation set is not yet available for all the galaxies but certain results are already clear. There do not seem to be any correlations between H 1 and H alpha structures. In some H 1 plume galaxies H alpha extensions were seen on the other side of the galaxy from the H 1; in others extensive H alpha filaments have been found but not H 1. The preliminary results agree with the simplest model that interaction-induced star formation will be concentrated in the system center, since that is where the mass ends up

    Breakup coupling effects on near-barrier <sup>6</sup>Li, <sup>7</sup>Be and <sup>8</sup>B + <sup>58</sup>Ni elastic scattering compared

    New data for near-barrier 6Li, 7Be and 8B + 58Ni elastic scattering enable a comparison of breakup coupling effects for these loosely-bound projectiles. Coupled Discretised Continuum Channels (CDCC) calculations suggest that the large total reaction cross sections for 8B + 58Ni are dominated by breakup at near-barrier energies, unlike 6Li and 7Be where breakup makes a small contribution. In spite of this, the CDCC calculations show a small coupling influence due to breakup for 8B, in contrast to the situation for 6Li and 7Be. An examination of the S matrices gives a clue to this counter-intuitive behaviour

    Statistics of football dynamics

    We investigate the dynamics of football matches. Our goal is to characterize statistically the temporal sequence of ball movements in this collective sport game, searching for traits of complex behavior. Data were collected over a variety of matches in South American, European and World championships throughout 2005 and 2006. We show that the statistics of ball touches presents power-law tails and can be described by qq-gamma distributions. To explain such behavior we propose a model that provides information on the characteristics of football dynamics. Furthermore, we discuss the statistics of duration of out-of-play intervals, not directly related to the previous scenario.Comment: 7 page

    The Infrared Nucleus of the Wolf-Rayet Galaxy Henize 2-10

    We have obtained near-infrared images and mid-infrared spectra of the starburst core of the dwarf Wolf-Rayet galaxy He 2-10. We find that the infrared continuum and emission lines are concentrated in a flattened ellipse 3-4'' or 150 pc across which may show where a recent accretion event has triggered intense star formation. The ionizing radiation from this cluster has an effective temperature of 40,000 K, corresponding to 30M⊙30M_\odot stars, and the starburst is 0.5−1.5×1070.5-1.5 \times 10^7 years old.Comment: 17 pages Latex, 7 postscript figures, 1 postscript table, accepted to A

    The population of deformed bands in 48^{48}Cr by emission of 8^{8}Be from the 32^{32}S + 24^{24}Mg reaction

    Using particle-γ\gamma coincidences we have studied the population of final states after the emission of 2 α\alpha-particles and of 8^{8}Be in nuclei formed in 32^{32}S+24^{24}Mg reactions at an energy of EL(32S)=130MeV\textrm{E}_{\rm L}(^{32}\textrm{S}) = 130 {\rm MeV}. The data were obtained in a setup consisting of the GASP γ\gamma-ray detection array and the multidetector array ISIS. Particle identification is obtained from the Δ\DeltaE and E signals of the ISIS silicon detector telescopes, the 8^{8}Be being identified by the instantaneous pile up of the Δ\DeltaE and E pulses. γ\gamma-ray decays of the 48^{48}Cr nucleus are identified with coincidences set on 2 α\alpha-particles and on 8^{8}Be. Some transitions of the side-band with Kπ=4−K^\pi=4^{-} show stronger population for 8^{8}Be emission relative to that of 2 α\alpha-particles (by a factor 1.5−1.81.5-1.8). This observation is interpreted as due to an enhanced emission of 8^{8}Be into a more deformed nucleus. Calculations based on the extended Hauser-Feshbach compound decay formalism confirm this observation quantitatively.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures accepted for publication in J. Phys.

    Spin lifetimes and strain-controlled spin precession of drifting electrons in zinc blende type semiconductors

    We study the transport of spin polarized electrons in n-GaAs using spatially resolved continuous wave Faraday rotation. From the measured steady state distribution, we determine spin relaxation times under drift conditions and, in the presence of strain, the induced spin splitting from the observed spin precession. Controlled variation of strain along [110] allows us to deduce the deformation potential causing this effect, while strain along [100] has no effect. The electric field dependence of the spin lifetime is explained quantitatively in terms of an increase of the electron temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    Binary Decay of Light Nuclear Systems

    A review of the characteristic features found in fully energy-damped, binarydecay yields from light heavy-ion reactions with 20≤Atarget+Aprojectile≤8020\leq A_{target} + A_{projectile}\leq 80 is presented. The different aspects of these yields that have been used to support models of compound-nucleus (CN) fission and deep-inelastic dinucleus orbiting are highlighted. Cross section calculations based on the statistical phase space at different stages of the reaction are presented and compared to the experimental results. Although the statistical models are found to reproduce most of the observed experimental behaviors, an additional reaction component corresponding to a heavy-ion resonance or orbiting mechanism is also evident in certain systems. The system dependence of this second component is discussed. The extent to which the binary yields in very light systems (ACN≤32)(A_{CN} \leq 32) can be viewed as resulting from a fusion-fission mechanism is explored. A number of unresolved questions, such as whether the different observed behaviors reflect characteristically different reaction times, are discussed.Comment: 79 pages REVTeX file, 39 ps Figures included - to be publihed in Physics Report
